I have a piece of one inch pvc that screws onto the inside of the bulkhead in my sump. It is about 10" long and has lots of holes drilled into it.

You could do something similar then wrap the pvc with filter floss or cut a hole in a sponge block and slide it over the PVC.

Maybe you can make out the piece of PVC i'm talking about from this pic.

Not to confuse you I have a recirculating model so that pump gets T'ed off, most goes to the display goes some goes to the skimmer in the filter closet. See below.

Hope that helps.

Will using PVC and Floss hinder the pumps ability to "draw" water in to the box or effect performance. That is what I have had reservations about mostly.

Depending on the length of PVC the number of holes and how regularly you clean the floss/sponge it can vary.

I have a 10 inch piece of PVC with probably 70 to 100 pea sized holes and my pump is doing fine. However it was designed to keep the pump from sucking surface air, but should also work fine for what your trying to do if covered with a thin layer of filter media.

Need Advice...

My MR-2 is hooked into my sump/fuge with the usual PVC Flex tubing. I keep getting little snails and crabs sucked up into the pump. I have tried putting a filter floss type cover over the intake but the pumped sucked that in as well. Is there any sort of intake filter that works well without impeding the flow into the skimmer?? Any tips would be helpful.

I actually thought about that last night!! I actually have an extra pump laying around too!

ok after messing around a bit last night I have learned two things but I can not explain either one of them.

Like I said yesterday I have PVC flex tube placed into my sump for the intake and a 1 1/2" pipe (same Diameter as the gate valve for the output .

If I MESS with either of these setting I affect the performance of the skimmer greatly and immediatley.
I tried putting some things to act as a "screen" on the intake and this caused reduced performance and
while I was at it I addred a elbow and some pipe to the output to reduce noise and splashing of water re-entering the sump.
Any time I added anything to the output line it made the water and foam level go down instantly.
So I left everything as it was and it went back to running great .. Now back to the drawing board for things to help keep the snails out and the splashing of water to a minimum.

Oils from your hands etc can cause the skimmer to act as you are describing. Did you give it time to settle back out after sticking your hands in the sump to apply the screen or the elbow?

I had thought of that possiblility for the intake but I figured something else was causing it on the output.
It was instant on the output. I would add a 45 degree elbow with about 6 inches a pipe so half the output was above ater and half under water and as soon as it went on the level in the box went down..

I would think that adding any fittings etc if anything to the output would raise backpressure and thus increase the water level in the skimmer.

I would suggest doing your additions then let it run for a while before you determin if they helped or not.

FWIW, changing anything on the output definetly does affect the water Like bkv said, adjust it how you want, and then let it run like that for a day.

New MR-1

I just join the club with an MR-1. After reading this post I am very confused about getting the correct pump. I was trying to use an internal pump (mag 12) but it is to big to fit in my sump. (tenecor simplicity filter).
I guess I have no choice to put a bulkhead or uniseal on the bottom on the sump area and put the pump under the tank.
I was concerned about the added noise an external pump would make but I think I could move the pump into a closet where the skimmer would be. The tank sits on a 12" stand so I could run spaflex from the tank to the pump (about 6') and still have it gravity feed.
I would appricated any advise on the best pump for this skimmer keeping in mind that I might upgrade to a MR-2 if I find that this skimmer is to small for a 100gal tank.

Thanks
Rich

Does anyone use dual becketts. I ordered mine with only one beckett and was wondering what benefits would I get by ordering a second beckett?

I am guessing I would use the same pump and feed both becketts from one line in like the pictures posted on MRC.com

If using a dual beckett, you should use a larger pump, but of course that depends on what type of pump you have now.

What pump are you planning on using ?

Peace,
John H.

Someone on another forum wanted me to take a picture of mine skimmer with a object next to it so they could get an idea for size....

But I run the MR-2R with two becketts on blueline 55 and love it.

Pic below.

I currently have a Gen-X 55 . Would that be enough to handle both becketts?? Or do I have to go bigger??

I think you would be fine with dual becketts on that pump. You should be able to drive both becketts adequately, but of course not at full capacity.

Peace,
John H.

Another question for the seasoned MRC owner. How & How often often do you clean your becketts. I have noticed that over the last few weeks I have had to close up my gate valve a little bit to get better performance. I am assuming this might be because of a partially dirty beckett ??
Also if I install another beckett what should I expect?
