MSX skimmer club

how deep should i run my msx 200 for maximum performance . i have it at 8in of water right now would 6in work better or does it need to be run deeper?

I just upgraded from a 250 to a 250A because of a warranty issue. This thing is a beast! :D

Drummer, why didnt you just buy the regular MSX200 then buy the BB3000 pump? Is the BB rated better than the Askol pump?

This was a warranty replacement for my old MSX250 (sicce pumps). Marine Solutions is not stocking SWC skimmers anymore and the 250A was all they had left in the 250 series. Darn the luck!

Nice looking skimmer Drum! Looks awesome.

Extreme, I assume you have used both the Askoll and the BB 5000. Can you give us details on what makes the bb5000 cheap? Numbers would be great in proving you hypothesis also.

I have a bb3000 on my octox200 and it has performed solidly for about 6 months now. I can not speak for the askoll personally as I haven't been lucky enough to need one b/c my tank is only 125 gallons. But, from what I have read about askolls for the last 3 years has been excellent. You will be very impressed Drummer! Congrats.

I hope so. Can't wait to get it in the sump and doing it's thing. Should have water in the tank within the month! I'll post some pics of how it works out. :)

I need some help. I have a MSX SWC Extreme 160 skimmer. I got it in a trade. It has the gate valve Mod. I need to know where to order the airtube. It was shipped to me but i must have thrown it away in error. I plugged the skimmer in and it just overflowed with water then I realized..no airtube connected to the pump.

Here's the skimmer with the air tube on the left side of the picture. I can't find it anywhere!!

Here it is sitting in the sump ready to overflow with water because the idiot owner didn't hook up the airtube.

This has the standard pump..no upgrade..just need the tube to connect to it. I thought I could run out and buy one to fit but I'm not sure that would work. Any help would be appreciated

I believe it's a 3/8 ID tubing. The one that I got was like a thick silicone tubing that didn't kink easily, but for the time being if you can find some vinyl tubing at the hardware store that will work; just be careful about it kinking.

I found the tubing...daughter hid it on me. I hooked it up but even with the gate valve all the way open, the bubbles and water just flow freely out the top of the skimmer. I added Bio-Spira yesterday which could make the skimmer go nuts. THis is a new tank that just got water yesterday. May be too soon to run the skimmer with all the additives to jump start the cycle....hopefully that's the issue

That gate valve mod is not right. With the output so high, the water level in the body will make it overflow. Try putting the short end of the elbow in the gate valve.

Thanks!! That seemed to work. Still skimming wet, but I assume since I have no bioload this is normal? Also, should I shut it off until I add fish or just let it run? Here are some pics now.

I just played with it a little and it did skim some brown even with no bioload at all. It is not overflowing as fast so should be good to go. I appreciate your help!! Let me know if you see anything else wrong or if you have any suggestons

+1 WHOA! Put the 90 that you have on top in the grey fitting coming out the side of the skimmer. Then put the GV on horizontal to the floor. You want the red valve on the top. There is no way the skimmer will work that way. There will be a ton of splash, plus the pressure will push water up into the cup. It has nothing to do with the additives as of now, but once you set it up correctly, you should be skimming away.

does anyone have pics of a 160 modded to work with the bubble blaster 2000? i realize there's some modification required, but wondering if people are sitting the pump outside the footprint of the skimmer and running pvc, or somehow sitting the skimmer on top of the pump.
