The clear is for the drain. The opaque for the pump/silencer. I agree on switching to regular clear vinyl 3/8" id tubing. The tubing that came with the cone is also the opaque silicone type but it is heavier walled and doesnt kink like the tubing that came with the 200 ... the same as that which came with your 160.

Ahh ok, I forgot about the drain! Thanks for the tip, I am definitely doing to try some different tubing to see if that works out better. Anything that isn't as thin (or kinkable if that's a word) should be an improvement!

I had purchased an msx 200 ( tried to tub test it but it kept getting an air cavity or something I dunno it wouldnt fill more than half way ( no water would come out the spout ) anyway i cut the mesh will and hope it helps. ( any one have a problem like this prior )

My other question is does anyone have pics of their sump with a msx 200 in it where space is very limited .. I have about 29 1/2 x 22 to work with and I am trying to some how save room for other equipment .. ( dosing pumps and such )

Was wondering if any of the smaller octopus sumps or eshoppes one will fit this beast . I sold my Bubble king mini which was only 7x7 in foot print .

Really need help as my sump is the last thing I need to design really .

Mines in a 30 gallon tank with 3 baffles dividing it. The skimmer section is about 17x11.5.

d-maz - My skimmer section is 11.5 x 16 so you should have no problems there.

Versus - Add a gallon of white vinegar & the skimmer will rock. Don't believe they work with freshwater & the vinegar will help it break in. Also recommend using the pinwheel to break in.

hey guys , I need to see if my msx i havent used yet is beefed in some odd way..

Was about to take a video but i want to make sure its not just the mesh screwing up .

how do i remove the mesh wheel so i can put on the pinwheel , i am triming the mesh even further but its odd.

Yeah, I was just telling versus that my MSX200 is in a 11.5x17 section.

Ganna try to sell mine even though the foot print isnt HUGE it would still require me dishing out a tad more for a custom sump .

Anyone have ideas why one of the sicce pumps might become noisy after 8 months of quite operation?

I took both the pumps apart and one had lost a tie for its mesh. this was actually not the noisy pump. The other mesh job still looked fine. I switched out to the pinwheels to see if the noise might go away but it didn't. Sounds like a rattling / grinding noise. really loud.
After playing with the pump for a while I can get it to run quite if I have the pump slightly pulled out of the impeller housing. But that just doesn't seem right to me.

Had one go noisy 3 or 4 weeks after it quieted down after initial break in. Same noise, a grinding/chattering noise but with a loud hum as well. Also it was not running consistent, alternating between pulling more and less water so the skimmer water/bubble level was rising and falling. Turned out the pump was bad and MS sent me a new one under warranty. I had purchased another sicce already to have a spare since I wanted to be prepared in case I lost a pump. MS replaced it pretty quickly but it was still about 10 business days from when I sent it to when I got a new one back so Im glad I bought the spare.

You can try swapping the magnet/mesh wheel assemblies between the two pumps to make sure its not a balance issue with the magnets/mesh wheels. But in my case I was running the pinwheels and swapping them between pumps made no difference. You likely have a bad pump but I would try the swap first just to make sure that problem stays with the loud pump. The quiet pump may get a little noisier when you put the other pumps impeller/magnet assembly in it (I believe that the pumps break in based on the impeller/magnet that is in them when they are first run) but the main noise issue should stay with the "bad" pump. Worth trying to swap to confirm the pump itself is the issue.

Check the red rubber boot that the shaft sits in, one of my pumps started making a similar noise. When I took it apart I noticed the shaft didn't fit tight in the rubber boot no more it either stretched or wore out, put a new one of those in and the pump is quite as when it was new.

Quick review on the LARGE ATB Purple Pinwheel:
http://www.reefspecialty.com/p407/ATB-Sicce-Pinwheel/product_info.html

The price is ridiculous, but what can you say? Blame the US government for letting the dollar fall so far against the Euro. Just grit your teeth and spend the money. It's well worth it.

Performance wise, I can't tell the difference between this and the mesh job (when the mesh job actually doing what it's supposed to). It worked like a drop-in replacement, without any fiddling with the water level. It starts every time, the skimmer level stays more consistent, and I'll never have to open the sicce to re-mesh. Unlike the stock pinwheels, the bubbles created are extra-fine, just like a mesh job. I'm happy with it, this is exactly what I paid for.

One day's skimmate with the new purple pinwheel.

This should hold me over skimmer-wise until next year when I plan to pick up a cone. This year I picked up a calcium reactor.

Good info BigJay. Did you notice any or a substantial increase in the amount of water being passed through as well?

I got the ATB wheels too, but one was defective. I have been waiting 3 weeks for my second wheel. I am not very happy with the service form this guys right now!

roadracn, how was it defective? I ask because tangtang is only getting low 20 on his wheel and did not fit rotor properly ( most get 29-30..)

This PPW fits the same as the SWC PW, but it is only getting 18scfh, SWC was getting 25-28.
