Mt. Marcy

who's dunnit. Who'd be interested in doing it. LMK.

FYI: highest point in NY state. Adirondacks high peaks. Relatively easy climb. Can be done in one day (my plan).... if in shape!

I used to scale Marcy in a day regularly but I'm almost 50. I want to prove I can still do it (to myself).

I was gonna Mount Marcy last year but i did Cascade instead. I need to get in better shape to do a 9 hour climb. Got beautiful views of Marcy though.

I still got attitude.

Need to prove I still got chutz-pah.... I mean.... strenghth!

Josh was mentioning to me he had a place near Fish Creek Campsites.
I love Fishcreek but I'm not fussy.

my son ships out to Parris this fall.

I've wanted to climb Marcy with him for many years.
At this point in time he's not very gung-ho at doing Marcy with me.

Time flies and he's almost gone.

One way or another I'm going to do Marcy this year.
(Sorry- this is the attitide I've had to adopt. It comes with aging.)

Marcy isn't a bad hike at all. I'd suggest doing it from the ADK Loj side. Go in the first night and camp at Marcy Dam. Next morning get up and hike the peak and back to Marcy Dam to camp. Hike out the next day. You should have plenty of time to do a few other peaks in the area. Tabletop is a fun one, although it'll be pretty wet in the spring. You climb up a run-off bed.

I did it last summer. if you're just doing marcy, it is a one day hike... no need to camp if you don't want to. I agree with the suggestion to do it from the loj side.

I wouldn't say you have to be in great shape... its not a strenuous hike, just long. plan on 10-12 hours at a comfortable but steady pace.

I'm a big Adirondack climber Gary. If I lived closer, I'd probably try and do the whole 46'er thing, but it's a haul from buffalo. I'm trying to do the top 10 though. Did Marcy and it's not easy, but not impossible either. When I was on top of Marcy it was unfortunately a really cloudy day so we got no views. We did however get a blue sky and were able to see above the cloud cover. That was pretty cool, but it was basically just Marcy peeking over the cloud tops.

I'm not looking forward to doing most of that hike again on my way to doing Skylight though

I've always wanted to do all 46. If you're looking for someone else, I'd join you if I'm free on a weekend. I'm also a fan of winter camping, but none of my friends are really into it and would want to climb them all in the winter.

Gary, if you have done it many times before you know the ins and outs of this climb. Find a trail you would like best, plan your day and do it. With your motivation I think you'll enjoy it even more than you plan. Go for it, it's an amazing climb and we'd like to see some pictures. I might be heading there myself again this year. I have only done it once when I was 13 and never got the chance to appreciate it.

I used to hike Marcy every year when I was younger.

At one point I had the entire trail memorized. I once did it as a day hike wearing sneakers and taking nothing but a bottle of wine and some granola bars.

I'm not really into doing the hike quickly but I'd like to do it at a steady pace allowing me to take everything in.

I'll never forget the time I brought my sister. She wore brand new hiking shoes and developed some severe blisters on her feet halfway into the hike. We had to turn around. I don't want to have to turn around ever again.

In May we will hike through the flowed lands, camp there one night, then on to climb the opalescent river to four corners (Marcy, Haystack, Skylight, and Grey).

I enjoy hunting the daks in the fall too. Nothing at all like hunting WNY.

State land? Rifle or Bow?

If you're looking for a place to break someone in to the concept of distance hiking, check out Old Loggers Path in PA. It's not a bad drive from Rochester. The loop is 33 miles with GPS (28 according to their data). There's a smaller loop that is 22 miles (GPS).

I think over the full route it's 3,500ft of elevation gain, but worth it for the mini watkins glen you can camp in.

I did Marcy years ago. An action packed weekend for a few of us kids! We got there late and stayed at Marcy Dam lean-to, showered under the falls (COLD!) and in the morning trudged up Marcy. It was totally in the clouds. We were in our teens but we looked like old men, gray with mist! Down we went, then followed the Opalescent to Algonquin. That was actually a better climb. It was crystal clear, we could see the ski jumps on Whiteface! I hope you get to climb Gary!
