I used to run 400w Radiums.
IMO/IME 400w Ushio 14k gives me more pleasing results and that's what you see in these pix. My aquarium also receives varying amounts of sunlight each day.

20" diameter max (to date) ?
the oral disc is always ruffled so exact max diameter is only a guesstimate.

The more I feed it the larger it gets and it's already big enough!

tentacle length (as well as overall size) varies quite a lot on all anemones, EC.
(I'm sure you already know that!)

I control this anemone's size via feedings.

If I feed it heavily it gets really large and stings the crap out of it's neighbors.

Perhaps the tentacles were longer when the anemone was in less flow and down low but I'll bet this anemone turns into a beast now that it's up higher in more flow.
 
I've been thinking about this tentacle length issue.

Perhaps because this anemone now relies much more on light and less on feedings it's tentacles aren't as long.

In any case, it's mass today is larger than it's ever been under my care.

With the recent addition of a Vortech MP60 to provide more flow for this anemone I would expect some new developments- perhaps a shift in it's position, an increase in size or tentacle length etc.

One thing is for sure- if I start up regular feedings it will get very large!
 
Hey Gary, awesome anemone! This whole tentacle length thing definitely has me puzzled, as we were discussing in my thread. The light/food ratio could definitely be a huge factor. I have a lot of light, but not as much as you. However, I feed my anemone a large chunk ever 2-3 days, which seems to be a lot, but it consumes it with gusto. Another thing to note, and I'll take updated pics, is that the tentacles around the middle of my Gig are much longer, while the outer ring of tentacles, which I asume is newer growth, is darker, with shorter tentacles. This new growth is under my 6 bulb t5, whereas the previous growth was under a 4 bulb T5 in a deeper tank. Perhaps the length of the already existing tentacles is due to it's previous life with less light, and the newer ones will continue to be shorter and deeper in color due to the increased lighting. I will certainly be keeping a close eye on it!

What do you think would happen with no feedings? Think it would slowly shrink, not grow as fast by still grow, etc.

DrDNA- I'm attempting a gigantea only after maintaining many other types of anemones and invertebrates over the years. The RC Anemone FAQ at the top of this forum gives a pretty good description of the husbandry required for S. gigantea, which might be one of the most difficult anemones to maintain in captivity.

Massive flow, intense lighting and a healthy specimen are basic requirements with this species, but it still doesn't guarantee success.

All seems to be going very well with this anemone so far, but I don't feel completely comforatble saying so. Knock on wood.

Funny thing. I remember when I started this hobby 18 years ago. I had great success with the gigs.. I was running a system II on power compacts .. It's amazing how much this hobby has changed!

thanks for all the comments, suggestions, insights etc.

as it stands today this anemone is far sturdier and much more powerful looking than ever. I feed it a few pieces of raw uncooked shrimp every now and then.

Randy- I believe that if I didn't feed it shrimp every now and then it would still hold it's own, (although at a reduced size). It does catch stray fish food.
Lighting is definitely playing a hand in the ability to reduce feedings.
This anemone currently sits 24" below a 400w Ushio 14k MH lamp + VHO super actinics.

Tentacles just outside the mouth area are definitely longer than tentacles located on the outer perimeter.
