i was thinking of doing a really long tank with 4 sections of around 10-15 gallons each, maybe two or three with mantis, and one with mantis snacks, snails, hermits, etc.

has anyone does this yet? i was thinking of using cross drilled plexi dividers custom cut at TAP plastics and making it similar to the Invert holding thanks at LFS's

should i use clear or non-see through plexi?

would the mantis shrimp fight each other through the plexi if it was clear?

also how necessary is a protein skimmer for keep mantis?

thanks

Mantis tank

I am running a 5 gallon mantis tank with no skimmer and 2 mantis with no problems... Hermits, turbos, and brine shrimp are in the tank also. Both of my mantis are small however (3 inches or less).

I run several 100 gal tanks divided into six sections, each with an O.s. We use egg crate to separate the animals, but we have to be careful since they frequently break through.

I have a 1 inch mantis, and I HAD a 3/4 inch mantis, but I temporarily put them in the same tank in an emergency, and the 3/4 incher got the crap kicked out of him over the span of the day.... he's a goner now. make sure you have dividers....

Nice to have. Usually a stomatopod tank does not carry a very heavy bio-load and skimmers help, but are not essential to maintaining good water quality. In my experience, frequent partial water changes to keep down nitrates is really important. For large O. s, I have also become a proponent of uv sterilization. It really cuts down on shell disease - or at least the severity of secondary infections.
