Agree 100%. You should first look to reduce.
AS for Angels, Pigmys and swallow tails seem to be Ok in a reef. I've had both with good sucess. As for the larger Angels, For the most part, I'd say they are not a good choice for a reef. Of course with any fish, there is always the exception.
I do know that there are several RC members who have had sucess with regal angels in a reef. On another hand, I'm also of the beleife that fish can be conditioned to acept certian foods and therefore leave your corals and such alone. I've been slowley playing with this some and have observed a certian behavior in some 3 year old fish I aquired.
Here's my case, I purchased a 400G tank, complete setup, with the large fish mentioned in my other post. The owner fed them a diet strictly of sinking pellets and sheets of Nori. When I aquired the system and moved it to my house, I begain trying to feed these fish frozen food like I did to my other fish in my other tank. To my supprise, these fish would not even touch the food floating on the surface but would quickly devour the sheets of Nori that I would float on the surface.
I then tried melting the frozen cubes before pouring it into the tank. If I did this, then the fish would eagrley devour it. I've been slowley playing with this and have now gotten these fish to eat the frozen cubes as they float on the surface. This has taken about a year of doing this on occasion.
I feel that if you condition your fish to eat the food you provide, keep them well fed, they will tend to shy away from eating your prized corals that you don't want them to eat. Of course this is all theroy and based loosley on my observations over the years. But I'm going to attempt this with a juvinele Blue Girdle/ Majestic Angel in the near future. Wish me luck.
