My 10G nano Project Underay - Lots of Pictures!!!!!!

Hi all quick question i still havent got my lighting sorted out but i am definatly going with a MH

I really want to get water in this tank and get it cycled so i can then start stocking it , anyway the question is i have a 12" T5 lighting unit with a massive 18w of power jk

Do you think this would be enough to sustain some live rock and any critters that might be there with the LR untill i get my lighting sorted as i wouldnt be able to stock it until it has cycled anyway so there wont be any light dependent stock

Thanks

Ash

Hi so heres my temporary lighting untill i get my MH, by the way i am definatley going with MH as its most likley that i will want to upgrade later so in the end run i will be saving some money. I also got my other eheim compact pump as with all the plumbing on the one pump the flow was reduced, i siliconed the false wall to the sides and the baffles so once the silicone has cured i will be filling it up with some water maybe sunday or monday will keep you posted

Heres some pics with the light on

Hi all well i thought i would water fill my tank and test out the flow and stuff so set it up the other nite with one pump, heres a pic of the fudge so you know what im talking about.

Please note that the diagram of the sump is not quite right as there is only room in there for one pump.

So the problem is the return pump does not give enough circulation in the main tank display and i didnt want to add a power head hench the built in sump as im going for the clean look. I then had a bright idea or someone on heres idea cant remember anyway it was to put another pump in the fudge area and this would be a benefit as anything good growing in the sump would be re directed to the main display

However this is the problem when i put the pump in the fudge it drains the fudge are which then in turn does not allow water to flow to the skimmer bubble trap and return section. Any sugestions. here is a photo of the pump the one on the left.

means you have too much gph running between the 2 pumps... could try a 2nd set of intake vents down near the bottom to mid section like in the aquapod.

Hi everyone

I have some small up dates sorted out the issue with my overflow being to small in relation to the two pumps im using just cut some more theeth. Added some sand aswell and got all the equipment in place minus the lighting as you may see i like my photos so heres some more.

Tank equipment apart from the heater forgot about that a 50w heater should be fine for a 10G what are you using bearing in mind im in scotland and can get a bit cold in the winter?

Im having a bit of trouble getting some RO water as my nearest LFS is shut as they are away on holidays, and i dont have my car just now and dont want to be carrying containers of water for miles. I have quite a bit of bottled water would this be any good.

Ash

I use a 50 watt heater in my 10 gal. Get's cold here in Virginia as well. I wouldn't use bottled water - can you find any distilled at a store near you?

Hi theres nothing like that here just bottled water and RO water you get from the LFS. Think i will just make a few journeys tomorow. Owell at least i wont need to buy a new heater just a spare one i had lying around.

Also ment to add i am going to be ordering the icecap 70w MH ballast this week from marine depot, and do some sort of DIY pendent with a floodlight however i would like some sort of quick disconect so i can take off the canopy. I was looking at housing the ballast in a box like this, but this one is not campatable with the 70w ballast any suggestions.

Ballast Box

Icecap Ballast

I would be very gratefull is someone could post pics of their 70w MH set ups and how they have it wired with a list of components i need to get, as i am cluless in this area. I hope to have it done within the next month while the tank is cycling hopefully get water tomorow i have a 18w T5 lighting unit which will do for the mean time.

They're easy to hook up. I have a NAIS ballast but the wiring should be the same. The AC wiring diagram should be on the unit itself, my wires are white, green and black. The wires you hook up to the bulb should also be listed and my wires are red and blue. Remember, the same color wires will hook up to eachother. There are some threads about hooking these up but don't be scared. You can always attempt it and post pics for suggestions.

Yeah am not to bad at wiring up stuff put in some halogen spotlights and extra sockets in the house so it should be easy enough, Supose its always more dangerous when water is involved.

Just hard trying to see how it works when ive got nothing in front of me its the quick disconect part im confused about would the ballast need to be in the canopy hood or underneath the unit as you can place them remotely.

So from the light fixture/lamp you connect these wires to the ballast which you then connect a plug to the ballast, would it be possible to put the quick disconnect in between the light fixture and the ballast so the ballast can be located underneath in the satnd or would it be better to have the quick release between the power cord and ballast. What sort of parts would i use for a quick release system.

Thanks wav3form that has helped

hahahha that slug shot is hilarious! He's probably down with the sour cream & onion :D

If you can just get some Glacier Water from the vending machine and put it in a jug and wheel it home with a shopping cart :lol2: you gotta do what you gotta do! :bum:

im afraid we dont have any vending machine where you get water from here its pretty grim. Theres another LFS just up the road from me so will maybe get from there but it takes a day or so and works out at bout $4 dollars a gallon daylight robbery if you ask me. Yeah thought the slug was funny bet you its about double its size now.

Finally got my lighting half sorted have ordered my 70w MH pendant and ballast, will get pics of it up and running when it is set up. I am going to be using a BLV 14000k lamp, I will be supplementing this with other lighting for a dusk till dawn effect with some PC blues to start with then white and blue then MH and the same for the dusk.

What sort of times do you keep on your lights on for I was thinking of this let me know what you think?

Dawn
10am Blue PC
12pm Blue & White PC’s
3pm MH with PC’s
9pm Blue & White PC’s
11pm Blue PC
12am Dusk

Off until 10am Next Day

About the water situation im just going to buy a RO unit less hassle in the end run.

So I got my 70w MH quick release pendant and control gear and BLV 14000k lamp however it does not work the only bit of wiring I had to do was add a mains plug to the ballast so im confident its not that I rechecked all the wiring aswell and the dam thing still doesn’t work me thinks ive got a dud, as when I switch it on the ballast doesn’t even make a noise which I thought it would as it’s a magnetic ballast im going to return it and get an electronic one so its like 1 step forward 2 steps back disaster.

Hi all been a long time since ive posted.

Anyway i still havent got my MH lighting resolved yet however i have changed the plumbing and been testing the flow and to see if the tank is watertight etc.

Here is a pic of the new plumbing i know i have 3 45 elbows on it but i need these to reduce the flow as when both pumps are on it works out at 480GPH flow which in turn would give me a 48x turn over which i think is a bit excessive but noticed a big difference when i added the 3 elbows per pump. The plumbing i have used is quite good aswell as it allows me to turn the outputs in any direction.

Heres a pic with the 12" T5 lighting for my Pico tank i am doing aswell will maybe post some pics once im finished it. The Light looks not bad but cant wait to get my proper lighting sorted.

Its driving mad not having anything in the tank so i had to add a Clown fish to give the tank a bit of life
