My 1165 Gallon in-wall Display Tank project

Have you decided to go with acrylic tank? I decided to use starphire for the ease of cleaning and I am so happy that I went with glass.
If mine tank was made of acrylic, it would not be running today.
The coraline algae is almost impossible to get them all out on acrylic, in particular when the tank is getting established. When I got back from being away for the summer, it took two people and 6 dives to get all the coraline algae cleaned off the wall.

Just mine personal experiences. Good luck with the tank and it would be awesome I am sure.

I was, but now I'm becoming worried again. When I lean towards glass I seem to notice all the threads of seams breaking. When I lean towards acrylic I seem to notice all the threads about scratching and the headaches of keeping them clean.

I'd be more worried about a broken seam than a scratch that can be repaired without draining but the headaches associated with keeping the acrylic clean seem so much more common. Plus the weight of a tank that large in starphire is an issue also.

Albright, would you consider shifting the tank to the left all the way to the corner and making it 2 sides viewable? 66" width would be amazing to see.

I would love to but the wall to the left conceals a support column :( It would have been great as it would be right on the side of the bar but alas it can't be done :(

I have a CL on my (much smaller) tank and am happy with it. No problems to date, I do see adding 2 Vortechs down the road once the new controllers are readily available. I'm in the town next door (Millstone) if you want to check it out.
Tony

I'd like to for sure. I will shoot you a PM after the holidays and hopefully we can set something up.

I'm almost definitely going with acrylic which would be 1" in thickness. They claim that a vortech is coming which can be used on 1" but I haven't heard any firm dates yet :( When they are released I'll probably add one or two to supplement the flow. I have one on my 120 along with some Tunzes and I love the random flow the vortech generates.

Pair of tunze 6300 would be insane i bet. Have you considered them????Ive heard mixed reviews on vortecs.

John,

If it were me, and I lived in the great state of New Jersey, I would go with glass. You are not in an earthquake prone area and it majorly sucks to keep acrylic clean. I would opt for a low-iron glass (Starefire) with a PVC bottom and a SS or Aluminum frame around the tank.

Keep in mind that glass tanks are extremely heavy so you have to plan for that, and they also have very little thermal value so you will have to be much more specific with your heating and cooling than you would with an acrylic tank.

While acrylic is much stronger particularly to things like quakes, keeping it clean is a major PITA.

I did acrylic and would never again. I have a 120x36x30 3 side starfire and REALLY glad I went glass. As of the seams you dont hear them go often and I see seams go bad on acrylic as well.

I'll get some glass quotes just to see. My main concern is the strength of the tank. But since the rimless look isn't important to me I'll discuss some options with a few builders on making it nice and strong. I will give AGE a call also as I like the PVC bottom concept.

Thanks guys for making me take one step back instead of forward! j/k :)

On another note... it took me longer than expected this weekend to learn a bit about Sketchup (and some time to get it working on Vista). Here are two quick mock ups of the fishroom with the 120" x 66" tank in place.

I'll be playing with the layout of equipment in the room over the next few days.

I of course do not expect the stand to be quite that open :)

The pole is a support column in the room and the white box is the door :)

Is the dehumidifier the HVAC contractor recommended.

Any feedback is appreciated.

You can also look into HRV or ERV... Heat/Energy recovery ventilators.
They cost a little less, use less electricity, and they circulate all the air in your house at least once every 3 hours.

Probably not as good at purely dehumidifying though.

*edit
It seems that the product you linked also circulates air pretty well, so maybe that is the best option.

Since you are thinking of Solaris, have you checked out the AquaIllumination LEDs yet? (www.aquaillumination.com) The use the Soeul Semiconductor LEDs which are more powerful than the Luxeons used by Solaris. I think they cost a bit less too.

Wow that'll be a monster skimmer...
And I also think you should look into the AquaIllumination fixtures if you are considering LED.

But MH is just so fun.
