My 150G Build Thread

Ok, I decided to get my skimmer custom built by Orca Skimmer. I stuck with a recirculating skimmer since I have had good sucess with them. It should be here in about a month or so. I pretty much designed it to match an H&S A200-2XF2001. they will be using the same aquabee pumps too. Its less than half the price of an H&S.

There is a pic of it thats similar to the design I requested in this thread I started. Mine is 28" tall with a 8.5" body and a 4.5" neck. It should handle a 300G system. The aquabee pumps are the ones used for some H&S and Deltec skimmer in which are a little pricey for me.

Ok. I have targeted labor day weekend to get the 150 started. Hopefully by the time the big swap goes on, the tank will be ready for livestock. Anybody have like a small trough I could borrow? I plan to plumb the 90 and 150 together temporarily till all live stock from the 90 is gone.

Ok, i guess I better get off my lazy arse and get some work done huh? Lol! Actually I have benn doing a little work on the tank. Middle of building some stands for the sump and fuge. The fuge stand is actually done and in place. Man that was a tight fit in the closet. I had to modify my plumbing a bit since it wouldnt quite go together in the permanent stand. I guess I should have measured twice. Pics will be posted later.

If you didn't have to modify the closet then you measured correctly as far as I'm concerned :lol:

I am not doing anything tomorrow (Sunday) if you need any help lifting or plumbing anything Russ.

I still have to drill a 1 1/2 hole in the sump. That will feed down to the fuge then back to the main tank. I will be installing a remote DSB in this system for nitrate control.

Alright, now I got a few more task done. I ran a couple of dedicated circuits for the tank. Now what kind of electrician would I be if I didnt do that and had cords all over the place huh?

And the main tanks final location. There is a 12" space behind the tank. I wanted that space so I can easily reach my valves if needed. I will be eventually install a 12" board to cover the gap. Hopefully I will be able to match the stain of the stand and hood.

That's how I leveled the 90. I had to put shims along the back and one side.

Tim shimmed it full of water though, I think the carpet will compress a little so I'd have it over shimmed when empty if you know what i mean. It may only move 1/4" -1/2" but I thought you might want to consider that if you didn't already.

Looking good though, I can wait to see this thing stocked, it's going to be a killer sps tank I'm sure!

You're going to love how that works. If you have an extra ball valve laying around it will be more responsive than a gate valve IMO. You may get tired of twisting that handle to open and close it all the time. I like just a quarter of a twist to open and close, quick and easy.

I leveled the 90 when it was empty and when I filled it, it will go wherever it wants depending on carpet tack strips, foam underlayment and the floor itself.

I used the plastic composite shims and had to stack three in some places to be effective. The plastic ones slide against each other real well and are easier to get out if you make mistake.
If you have room to swing a hammer even a little you may need to shim again after the water is in.

Not sure what the exact color is. I bought the stand used. I think it is an oak skirting though.

Well, after the silicone for the baffles cure, Ill be doing one more wet test. Ill get a better idea on where to shim it better.
