My 220 Gallon SPS Dominate Build Thread

Congrats on getting your new camera, looks like santa was good to you!

Awesome progress, keep the pics coming.:fun4:

Bill, pics are looking really good! Based on what I've seen in person, your WB is pretty darn bang on in those pics above. Did you use a tripod for these, or hand held? Which body did you end up getting, 60D?

Thanks. I was surprised myself how close it was when I loaded them on my computer. The biggest problem I am having is with Yellow. That colour doesn't show up in the pictures of my CJs Pinky or A. caroliniana.

We picked up a Canon 20D. My daughter and I both loved the new Full Frame Canon 6D, which was just released, but we are going to practice first on this Canon 20D. LOL (The person I bought it from never really used it, opting to use his 30D instead. His 30D looked very used and tired but this 20D was in perfect shape.)

:)

Looks great Bill but im gonna go a head and disagree with Jordan. The WB is close but i thknk those pics could be warmed up a tad and you will see more pop but truer color on a few of those like the yellow you are talking about.

Well looks like you've gotten the hang of it already. I'm assuming you probably got a pretty good deal on the 20D. In a year or two, once the 6D has been out for a while longer, you'll be a able to get a better deal on a used one! But in the meantime, I'm sure it will be a great camera for you as well as for your daughter to learn on.

You might get a bit further balanced pics with tweaking WB in post, but those will be fairly minimal in my opinion... nothing wrong with the yellows here...

Regardless, nice shots Bill, to nail things so close right of the start IMO is pretty impressive.

The input is great fellas, thanks.

I have yet to try Shooting in RAW then post processing. I assume this will help me get the shine, pop or life the photos are missing. They seem flat to me.

The 20D sure was a steal and hopefully we get good enough to justify something like the 6D. We went in to purchase the 60D but my daughter really liked the 7D and especially the feel of the 6D, which was even lighter. So we discussed trying something out first just to make sure the extra spent between something like the 60D and the 6D would be worth it to us. I am glad we went this route and I am sure the 60D would have been fine, but that nagging "what if" feeling is something I would rather live without.

I will post more pics soon. Going to scout out PhotoShop Elements and Lightroom 4

:)

Some photos faired better than others. I will say this one was beginners luck. We picked up the camera Saturday morning and after some research got this shot, as well as the others, on day two. All shots taken on our first day were disappointing, OMG nothing was in focus, it was brutal.

Your thought process is a good one. Best let her decide to find out what type of photography she is interested in (and that she actually wants to keep it up) before progressing to a better model, and matching suitably.

In terms of shooting raw and pop, you may find the opposite. Shooting in jpeg, the camera adds saturation and contrast as per the spec's of the cameras body. Shooting in raw strips that info away. So you may find that the RAW images will appear even flatter straight out of the camera. Shooting in raw will give you more post processing play however in terms of making edits.

I found using iPhoto with raw images difficult to work with. I'd use DPP if you got it with the camera (if not, you can probably download a free version). LR is terrific -your daughter can get the student version for $90, money well spent IMO.

Getting a close WB match off the camera is a very large part of the battle, I agree with that. Here is what I'm talking about. I slighting adjusted this photo just using sliders on windows picture viewer. Im basic and have learned to use simple tools. My total knowledge is not even close to Jordans though.

Would you say mine is closer to what you see?

On my screen your adjustment shows a little more colour but not on the body of the acro. In my tank this particular colony has very bright yellow tips and a nice yellow body/base. I think it must be shadow that just gets more enhanced or brown as the colour gets boosted. Somehow I have to get more light in that photo by either slowing the shutter speed or playing with the ISO.

:)

Darryl, that comparison just looks more saturated to me as opposed to more balanced... but without the coral in front of me, impossible to determine for certain... very much in the eye of the photographer and completely subjective as this discussion goes to show.

Bill, try and get a bit less light in that shot (2/3 to 1 full stop) - more will likely make it overexposed.

subjective for sure. Needless to say I didnt touch the saturation, only the color temperature slider.

It could be the angle the picture was taken vs. the angle which you normally look at it. Im assuming its near the bottom and you are standing. Also contrast could do what your describing sometimes.
