My 240 gallon reef project

I'm slacking, I have some updates, and got some goodies today. Since the weather has been so nice here I've been working in the yard, and doing car repairs for family. Plus my server went down last sunday, so i had to build a new one so I can host my pics. Hopefully tonight or tomorrow for pics and updates.

Thanks for asking by the way.

Greg

ok time finally time for an update. I haven't reached my goals that I had planned at this point. but the dining room has been painted, the wife still has to do the clouds on the ceiling and I have to fill all the cracks from the house settling. Its never ending.

Here are some pics of the process.

this is the face for the cabinet, still have to cut the doors in, but it is now sealed and primed.

Well I guess thats it for the moment I need to upload some pics to the server.

Ok well I uploaded some more pictures. Here is my standpipe, let me know what ya think. Should I shorten it?

And here is one the returns. I will have to wait and see how it works. I was attempting to remove the hard 90 bend.

Of course I didn't take any of the wall with the painters tape removed.

Well now, I have to import pics from the camera to the server. Lets see If I can get this done now.

Ok now that I have my pics up on the server I can post a bit more yet tonight.

While I was steam cleaning monday the UPS man delivered three large boxes.

So what we have here is my sump and skimmer setup. I expect the refugium to be here in a week or 2.

I'm still in the process of placing the items under the stand, but no pics of that yet. I also have to order all the plumbing parts. Hopefully I will get that figured out tomorrow.

And here is the lights being run for the first time. I had a little wiring problem, took me 2 hours to figure out that I had installed the gfci incorrectly.

Very nice setup.
My 210 setup I am building is very simular to yours

I also went with Lifereef "again" I went with the LF200 which Should be arriving via UPS today
I debated on which lifereef skimmerI wanted to go with and ended up getting the VS3-48 which should be here tomorrow or monday.

Same lighting except I have the 72" model..

I have used lifereef since the mid 90's and I cant say enough great things about it.

Which pump did you get for your skimmers. the MDQ2 or 3?

On my old VS2-24 skimmer I started out with the MDQ2 650GHP t and the skimmer worked pretty well. I later changed the pump out to a Genx40 1190gph and the skimmer ran excellent. It probably filled the waste cup every other day. Night and day difference with the pumps.

Well I'm moving along slowly but I did get a few more things done. I mounted my shelves for the ballasts, which I forget to take a picture of. As well as my sanders ozone generator, air pump, and dryer.

We finally got the front panels assembled and in place. I do have a couple of pics of that.

And here the panels are removed.

My aqautronica equipment arrived today along with a large box of fitting from savko. I'm waiting on my stuff from us plastics and I can finally get some plumbing done and get water in this thing.

Hopefully tomorrow I will get the baseboard cut. It will completely removable as well to allow me to remove the sump and accessories if needed. Thats all for today.

cough, dusty, cough. Well I haven't updated lately but I have been working at it. I will take some pics and post them up later hopefully. The tank is up and running and curing about 500lbs of marhsall island and pukani live rock. I've done some upgrading to equipment. I have a red dragon pump on the skimmer, and 2 red dragon pumps. My calcium reactor came a few days ago, and my waste collector and kalk reactor arrived today. Plumbing was a nightmare leaks everywhere, but after about 3days of repairs its all sealed up. I still have to plumb in my 2 return pumps.

Geeze, just over three years, and it still isnt done. The tank was coming along nicely and the WAM, it crashed. For the last 2 years I have just let it run as is. But about a month ago I decided to get it back into shape. I started a few threads here and there about my problems. I am slowly working out the chemistry issues I think. The biggest driving force behind the sudden desire to get it nice again is my 6month old. He loves to swing in his chair and watch the few fish that are left.

After a few overflows of the sump and skimmer the wife agreed to let me move the sump and all into the garage. The tank is against the garage wall. It will not be a room like many here have, more like a closet. But it will be bigger than the wife thinks. I also have to contend with the garage door track, in the end I think the "closet" will be about 4'-5' deep.

The wife won't let me open the wall behind the tank so I am gonna have to pass all the plumbing and wiring through the wall. I am going to have a new sump made, gonna contact melev about that. I am gonna reuse my gallon fuge from my current setup and add a few more tanks as well. I recently replace my jbj nano with Current Solana, so I am gonna use that tank as well. I also have a 30 gallon cube that I bought as a QT tank that I never use.

In addition to that I am gonna upgrade my skimmer, been leaning towards an Orca at the moment. Gonna upgrade the pumps too, I have Red Dragon 10M3's at the moment, but I am gonna go with 12M3's instead. The tank is 22" deep I think, so for some reason that seems like a good depth for the shelves. I am going to have to get some electrical work done to add some circuits, gonna need another breaker box as the builder left no open slots for expansion. I also need to get the generator, I have been delaying for as long as the tank has been up, to this point I have been lucky with no extended power failures.

I have a Teco chiller on its way, very excited about it too. The Solana was running warm, but I added a Tunze Aquawind and now it pretty stable at 76.5-79 during the peak of the day, instead of 84. My big tank is at 84-85 this year, never had that before.

The cabinet will about 10' long. I will have 3 shelves, one at ground level, one at the foundation level, and one above that. The ballasts for my MH's and the T5 retrofit I am planning will me on a shelf above the closet.

Well thats all I can think of to write about at the moment. My biggest hurdle at the moment is the sump design. Since the red dragons are submersible I want them to be mounted in the sump. I am gonna try and make up a sketch of the plumbing situation as that also concerns me. I want it to be clean and functional. Comments and suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Not much progress. The much needed chiller arrived yesterday. But I haven't even had a chance to take it out of the box. Its a Teco TR20. I hope to take some pictures tomorrow of the current state of things.

I finally took the chiller out of the box, but the wife's birthday interfered with setup, maybe tomorrow. Also planned for tomorrow, a trip to home Depot to shop for the generator. At the moment I am looking at a 20kW standby generator, I am really hoping I don't have to go bigger. I am also going to pick up some epoxy paint for the walls. The plan is to get the wall cleared where fish closet is going to be constructed, and painted this weekend.

On a different note. I have been reading and researching my top off/water change solution. I can across the Dialyseas Unit from SeaVisions. I called them up and to get a Dialyseas Unit with a C.A.D.S system would cost in excess of $7000. Well I found a used Dialyseas Unit with a new C.A.D.S system for half that. So I am taking the plunge and picking it up on Sunday. I am most excited about this.

This is gonna change some of my plans, but that's OK right now. Can't wait to get started on the construction of the walls.

I took some pictures of my tank, but haven't had a chance to get them off the camera.
