My 280g Custom upgrade.....

Steve - Did your readings seem to go up with the combination of GFO and LaCl3 or even just using GFO? The reason I ask is I have been doing some research on that LaCl3 and it seems to leave some residue behind when using it. I wonder if that can skew your readings. Also since the pukani rock is so porous I wonder if the LaCl3 is getting trapped inside? Either way you have been fighting the battle for a long time with the levels reducing and raising again.

I tried to explain that to him but my words didn't come out right. You did a better job than I did.

The po4 began to rise this week with just using gfo. I'm aware of the precipitate or residue that is left behind from the LaCl3 but it has been said in another thread that at the ph levels we maintain in our tanks the residue will not break down and leach po4 back into the system. Before placing the rocks back into saltwater I thoroughly rinsed and dunked them numerous times in rodi and cleaned the bins thoroughly because there was a lot of residue left in them.

I love the way pukani looks but after going thru all of this I don't know if I could trust putting it back in my dt even if po4 read 0 for 6 months. I have a large order of live rock coming in next week. I will continue to try and rid the pukani of po4 and then either sell it or use them in my rock sump that I'm setting up for the tank.

This is maybe a question for Randy Holmes Farley. Why does the rock in RO water show zero phosphates, yet in SW .04., .05, ...?

Too bad Randy seems to be on hiatus lately. I'm going to do another 100% wc on the bins today. After showing po4 in my make up water I took the container I use to mix outside and cleaned it out. I made a fresh batch of sw last night and just tested this morning. Ran the test twice and both times the results were zero.

Sorry for sounding frustrated, it's just that this is driving me crazy. I'm thinking about isolating the very large pieces I have from the smaller ones and see if there's a difference in po4 levels there.

Have thought about pumping the water through a filter sock and dripping the lanthium chloride into the sock? After I started my tank with pukani rock I read about the issues some people were having with PO4. I read up on what I might need to do and dripping lanthium chloride into a sock seemed to be the recommendation. The thought is that the precipitate is captured in the sock rather that in your system. Fortunately I never had a PO4 spike even though I the rock went right into my tank.

I dosed mine in the overflow into the 10 micron socks. but for my rock bin I placed a 90 on the return of an extra pump I had and placed a 10 micron sock there and it caught everything.

I am amazed at the quality of the pictures that the iphone takes. The only editing I did to the pics is cropped them a little. All of these pieces are thriving in my frag tank that is being run with a HOB filter, 3 pieces of live rock, 2 part dosing and a 8 bulb AquaticLife T5 fixture with all ATI bulbs. Theres no skimmer, no scrubber and I've been doing 15% wc's every other week since everything got moved into the frag tank.

I have been tinkering with the t5 though for my next tank
Corey

I will tell you that the longer I keep my corals in my frag tank under the t5's while I work on getting the DT back on track, the more I want to just order an 8x80w ATI sunpower.

Steve - The pictures look good. That setosa colony is looking great. I need to get some updated pictures of mine as well.

Steve, it has been a couple of weeks... How about an update?

Hey Dan....thanks for checking in. The last few weeks have been pretty busy for me with the tank. I finally raised the white flag on the rocks and ordered 250 lbs of Totoka live rock. I had never heard of it before but after looking at pictures of it online and talking to the person I was getting it from I decided to pull the trigger. The rock came in two weeks ago and I immediately began to cure it.

The rocks cycled pretty quickly and have been clear of nitrates for the last 4 days. I have been ghost feeding and doing water changes every other day on the rock bin. Most importantly phosphates have been testing at 0.

Now for the fish and DT...the DT has been at hypo levels for over 5 weeks with no signs of ich. I will begin raising the sg of the tank tomorrow so hopefully by the end of the week I will be back to 1.026 and start adding rocks. I picked up another 80g frag tank and will run the frag tank as a separate system with just frags where new coral additions will go before being added to the DT. The old frag tank will be converted to a live rock sump where whatever rock that doesn't make it into the DT will be placed into that tank. I'm also almost done setting up my fish qt tank. I had a 65g tank plumbed into the system that was basically a recirculating tank and was used for water changes. It was very difficult to access the inside of this tank to clean it and noticed that detritus was beginning to build up on the bottom. It was a nice feature on the system to have because I could shut of the return line for it, turn the pump on and in 5-10 mins have 65g's drained from my system. I also found that this made it too easy for me to skip some of my husbandry duties from time to time when it came time to do wc's.

Finally the light....I am going to lean more on the t5's and run the leds at a reduced intensity. So my lighting set up looks like this now. T5 bulbs....2 x ATI Blue +, 1 Purple and 1 Actinic. The LED's will run for 8 hrs a day with a 2 hr ramp up and 2 hr ramp down. Whites are set at 20% max and all other colors at 60% max. I borrowed back the par meter that I sold (thanks Henry!) and did some tests tonight. The light is hung 16" above the water and with all lights at their max settings I got the following readings....surface of the water 550, 14" below the surface/30" from the light 300 and finally at the bottom 26" below the surface and 40" below the light 125. These reading were all taken in the middle of the tank with all pumps off. I will play around with more this week and get more readings from the sides and corners of the tank. So, things are definitely moving in the right direction and I am getting excited about putting the first piece of coral back into the tank. One thing I am thinking about is not having acros in the tank. I am thinking about just focusing on monti's, birds nests, stylo's and poccilo's along with lps and softies. Im seeing too many threads lately where some of the most experienced reefers are having issues with acros.

Stay tuned for more updates next week.

Thanks Steve! Those rocks really look nice. Raise your salinity slowly. You aren't in a hurry!

I am still biased towards LED's but, you've been having success with the T5's.

As far as coral preference, you can't go wrong in any direction. I wouldn't read too much into the issues some of our fellow reefers have had with SPS. It has certainly been shocking with both Peter and Luc, but, they are different issues and different diseases. You just have to go with what you feel most comfortable with.

What did you end up doing with your old rock?
