my 29 build

ok, i re-did the overflow part of it to fix my screw-up of mounting the single-union ball valve upside down (DOH!!!)

since i had some leftover 1" pvc & fittings, i decided to run it 1" from the bulkhead down....should keep the water level more consistant than doing the 1.5" since it won't flow as much water out for the mag3 to try & keep up with since 1" will typically flow about 600 gph. guess i coulda dropped it down to 3/4" but decided on the 1" cause i had an extra 1" dual-union ball valve i couldn't return cause i didn't have the receipt LOL

so i cut it coming out of the bulkhead leaving just enough 1.5" pvc to slide on a 1.5" slip/slip coupler. then i put in a 1.5" -> 1" reducer bushing & then the 1" dual union ball valve. it drops down to another 1.5" sweeping T (had an extra of those too) & each port of it has those 1.5" -> 1" reducer bushings. each end of the T is the same as before

i also built a small box that is mounted to the back wall to elevate the Bulk Reef Supply Single Chamber Carbon/GFO Reactor to sit above the pvc running to the refugium

minor update.....

1st set is the closed loop intake tube drilled & the pvc painted black (krylon fusion)

2nd set is the american dj strips, florescent light & LED grow light for the cheato all installed

3rd set is the LED light on (no flash 1st 2...soft flash on the 3rd pic)

Okay, I've gotta ask, why do you post thumbnails? I had to click on 9 different images, opening up nine tabs to see your pictures. Seems like you could just post full size images (800 x 600, 1024 x 768 perhaps) just as easily.

I like the painted plumbing. It looks nicer, and is less notable when the reef is running.

Off to close 9 tabs. :D

personal preference. makes the page load faster. find it irritating to goto a thread & waiting on all the pics load...which 1/2 the time, most are no interest to me LOL

the thumbnails give you an idea & can be clicked if ya want to see detail

but thanks for taking the time to click all the pics :D

btw....learn the keyboard shortcuts :p

holding ctrl while mouse-clicking a link opens it in new a new tab
ctrl + t = opens new tab to homepage (have mine set to blank)
ctrl + w = closes active tab
ctrl + tab = skips thru open tabs

those 4 should make your online life easier LOL

So you are saying I have to learn something new just so you can keep doing stuff your way? I don't think that is right at all. I usually go with what the guy with the most posts says. :D

Nice build James. I learned of it in the closed loop thread. looks like we are on similar paths in terms of downsizing... I would love your feedback/thoughts/improvements on my build (pics are in my gallery.

apparantly, according to marc (melev), my post count is too low LOL

seriously, looks good. i did mine by reading alot of posts & incorporating things i had seen on differnt people's tanks....& ALOT of "what if"-ing in my head before starting

don't forget to read as much as you can on melev's site....there is a ****-ton of info there. we been ribbing each other here, but he really is a good source of info & advice...both on his site & actually asking him questions

lastly, grow a thick skin to criticism here & don't take anything personal if somebody says something you don't like. read ALOT so you can make an informed decision on things to do. they might not be right for somebody else, but if it works for you, in the end that's all that matters

here is my one "critcism/useful advice"......the pic labeled 29g build 4 any of the lines that attaches TRUE the tank via a bulkhead, i'd advise to do it (bulkhead -> ball valve -> union -> pvc) cause you never know when you might have to remove a line or do some kind of maintanence & w/out them you will have to drain the tank (either partially on the top ones or almost all on the bottom ones)....just make sure you do it in the right order (as i screwed that up earlier in mine) LOL

I love watching others type to each other. Here's a guy with twice as many posts as the guy he's speaking to... which he acquired in barely 8 months, compared to the 29 months the other guy has....

Anyway, I'm done causing trouble in this particular thread. Whom shall I go pester now? :D

OH ... ok.... took me five years to get this far, wonder if I will ever catch up to melev.......

if he stops posting .......you might

according to my quick algebra calculations, at the pace you have held for 5 years, if you continue that pace, it will only take you about 278 years to be at 41k posts

HAHAHAHAHA

well maybe I can do a ctl + t + m to his website, and leave the window open for a couple of years... maybe that would help? He would have to take time to figure out why his bandwidth was leaking?.......:D

there is a simple ping command in command prompt that would cause some major slow bandwith lossage

it's how alot of denial of service attacks are done on websites. i think it was done on microsoft a long time ago. basically the hacker made a virus that infected alot of computers & then at a certain time, they all initiated this simple ping command to microsoft & the webserver had all these ping commands to answer & eventually shut down

back on topic.......

woohoo, i had miscalculated the available depth in the bottom of the stand in front of the sump tank where i want to put the ato/rdsb tank, so i tried to cut the glass down, but was unsuccessful. i had decided then to just scrap that part, but today i went to get the pieces i had cut along time ago for my corner bubble traps in the old sump to fit the new tank.

i got to talking to the owner of the glass shop about it & he said if he had the scrap pieces to make a small tank, he'd give em to me for $10, so we managed to find scraps big enough to do 1/2 the tank i was originally gonna do. i figure i'll do that for the rdsb & for the ato reservoir, i found some cheap plastic containers at target that should work

i still need to order the ATO kit from aquahub.com or autotopoff.com but can't decide which one to get......comes down to do i want to assemble it (aquahub.com) or get it pre-wired (autotopoff.com).

since i still get our group buy discount at bulkreefsupply.com, i'll probably get the aquahub one that they sell since it is even cheaper thru BRS :)

**edit** yeah....just checked & i can get the aquahub premium kit & aqualifter pump from BRS w/ my discount cheaper than just the autotopoff.com kit
SCORE!!!! :D

Aguahub stuff works good, I custom build mine from scratch, however use the float switches from AH. The parts I use are just different versions of AH parts, for some different funcitionality. For instance DPST, or DPDT relays.
