My 30 Rimless Frogfish Sanctuary

Here is my mixed reef with my frogfish "Bubba" after Bubba in Forest Gump, I used to only feed him shrimp when he was much smaller so I found it humorous to name him this. I also have a blue stripped pipefish that lurks around in the rock work. Sorry for the picture quality, my Iphone doesn't seem to like my light, I hope you like my piece of the reef!

Thanks,
Tim

Thanks for the kind comments, its still a work in progress. It's only 9 months old and the corals are starting to take off again after I was in the bahamas for a month and a half. The caretaker wasn't as diligent as I am but it faired well, then two moves in 3 weeks to get to my new place. Its now been in the same place for a month and my sps are starting to get their color back. Im hoping the corals really start coloring up and looking good again in the next month or so!

Thanks,
Tim

Very colorful !!! Nice rock organize too. My nano reef is only green color. I want some orange and red, blue :)

I'm glad you all like the set up! Upon request I will go over my system, its really quite basic.

Lighting:
I have one 250 watt pendent with a hamilton ballast and phoenix 14k bulb. I have a galaxy ballast waiting to be put on there but I'm waiting until I can get my hands on the Lumen Max Elite reflector. In the end I want the reflector with the galaxy ballast and a radium bulb with some supplemental led's for actinic.
Photoperiod: 3-11pm, 8hrs.

Filtration:
This is a JBJ 30 Rimless AIO set-up, so its all contained behind the tank. Instead of using the filter boxes/containers that come with the tank I turned one chamber into a refugium with chaeto that just gets indirect light from the halide. For the other side I used a container piece off of an octopus skimmer that sits perfectly in the chamber and allows water to pass through it. So I cut up a 25 micron filter sock so that the pieces fit nicely inside and use that as my filtration, I change it out about every 3-5 days. On top of the piece of sock is a bag of carbon and polyfilter to catch the larger debris. My skimmer is an eshopps PSK-75 hang on the back that I just recently got about 2 months ago, it skims real good and allows me to feed my corals heavier.

Flow:
I have 2 Nano Koralias hooked up to a JBJ wavemaker that alternates each one for 20 sec. at a time, runs 24/7. Eventually I want one mp10 on here but the college life budget is making that difficult. haha

Maintenance:
The first six months I did weekly 5 gallon water changes with reef crystals, I have now stepped it back to every 1.5-2 weeks. I also dose daily using ESV B-Ionic and ESV magnesium and I add a drop of lugols after every water change.

Feeding:
Twice a week I hand feed all of my LPS PE Mysis and on occasion I add some Reef Nutrition phyto/rotifers. Other than that bubba gets a couple of damsels or chromis every few weeks so not much food actually goes into my system allowing me to keep it really clean and nuisance algae free!

Heres a video, just click on it.

Thanks,
Tim

Thanks for the break down and your tank looks great on that college budget

What do you do just put the chromis or damsel in and let Bubba do his thing?

How many does he go through in a typical week?

Good question, well I don't feed him super heavily but I put in 3-4 damsels/chromis at a time and he usually takes down about 1-2 a week. Once he finishes off that batch I wait about a week before I feed him again. So I would say about 3-4 chromis every 3-4 weeks. I'm scared to over feed him because I know they can kill themselves, they are fat asses and don't know when to stop! Haha I figure in the wild they probably go weeks in between meals on occasion so I don't think this is out of line with how he would normally eat. He's also growing really fast, he's probably about 3 times the size of when I got him so I figure I'm doing just fine with his feeding regiment!

Thanks,
-Tim
