nice tank!!

Thanks. Let me know what you think of my build so far. IM updating the post below. thanks again

Hi ladies and gents, Im just updating my progress a little with some work ive been doing on the stand and base for the stand. I changed up my design a little from the cad plans above with some of the bracing but the stand and base are both really stout. See the pictures below. I have to take some more pictures of them together, b/c Ive added the exterior skin and doors and trim. Im now sanding the stand and prepaing to stain it. I also purchased a 75 gallon All Glass Tank that I will be using as a sump and I purchased a skimmer that I should have by friday. I just need to buy a couple pumps and plumbing stuff and im good to go.

P.s-Just wondering if anyone knew if I could drill a all glass 75 Gallon tank or if they were temperd glass. thanks in advance.

You should add 2x4's to the 4x4's so the top frame rests on the 2x4's. As it is now, all the weight is distributed over a handful of screws.

A handful of screws? LOL. try 3 boxes of screws, lol. But I thought about what your saying. However since Ive added the exterior skin, doors, and trimmed out the whole thing. I would have to add them to the inside of the 4x4's only because the outsides are covered by the plywood skin. I have to post more pictures, but I will consider your idea. The stand is still over built I think. I built a 270 Gal stand the same way with wieght on the screws and not how your suggesting, but I might just spring for a couple more 2x4s and reinforce the inside of the 4x4s. thanks

P.S.-before any flaming starts on my stand construction, please realize I am not a CARPENTER nor do I pretend to be. lol. SO take it easy on my stand. thanks

whats up, i just caught up with your thread. everything looks cool, are you planning a mix reef?

Instead of those skinny screws, have you thought about using some grade 8 lag bolts? I've used them for load bearing, and they are MUCH sturdier those screws you are using. They look like giant screws you turn into the wood using a wrench. You would have to pre drill a hole though.

No, I havn't thought of that but it would've been ok, just more work, lol. I reinforced the stand like a member suggested by adding 2x4's to the inside so that the screws aren't carrying the load alone. I'll post pictures below of the modifcations to the stand. thanks though.

Here are some update photo's of the stand and base, the skimmer and 75 gallon sump, and where the tank will sit in my living room.

Looks good indeed. Did you say what you plan on keeping in it? What are the long-range livestock goals?

That will be pretty slick tank.. I like the shape. I'm very glad you added the 2x4s. Doesn't matter now but you would have been better off just using two 2x4s for the posts and cutting one short so the top frame would sit on it. I'd never trust screws to hold that top frame. Even more so since you said the bottom of the tank seems a little flimsy. At anyrate between the added 2x on the inside and the plywood outside it should be fine now.

Followed the link from MARSH, nice tank!! Going to be tagging along

Its going to be sweet in the living room.

I want to do a 300 marineland series tank in my livingroom as well

Pretty damn snazzy for not being a carpenter.

I'll add to the "I wouldn't....." with the whole placement of load, but it's your tank man, and at the very least it looks pretty :D
