Don't feel bad - I got my 40b during the 4th of July Petco sale and am still working on getting it set up, so this has to be my longest running setup build I have ever done.
Sorry to hear about your trial and error with the LED's. I have a LED strip on my planted tank and while it is nice decided to stick with what I know for my 40b build and go with metal halides. Yeah, you probably could have gotten a few T5 bulbs with that $800+.
Of course being in Florida I skipped the hood idea completely and went with a pendant setup. It's near the end of September and todays high was 91 - seriously!?! Been living here for 5 years now and still haven't gotten used to it.
BTW, your hood came out really nice and has that professional look to it. Well done!
