My 500 + gallon system. Last 13 years to now. Build, Aquascaping & more. Lots of pics

I have had to make a minor change on my ozone reactor setup. Originally I had the effluent from the Ozone reactor plumbed directly into my BRS jumbo carbon reactor packed with their ROX carbon. I was getting a heavy ozone smell under the tank and in the sump. This was likely due to the fact that the BRS reactor didn't hold enough carbon to strip the ozone out of the airated water. That coupled with the fact that it was setup to perculate up through the carbon instead of down through it. Avast suggested it should drip down over the carbon and also suggest lignite carbon. As such, I shut the ozone down while I determined my next course of action.

A couple days ago I ended up getting a 22" tall reactor that holds much more carbon. Per Avasts suggestions, I filled it with nearly a gallon of lignite carbon and reversed the flow so the ozonated water drips from the top down through the carbon instead of perculating from the bottom up. That did the trick! With the low flow rate through the reactor and the new cabon reactor, I get absolutely no ozone smell under the tank. Its been running steady for the last 2 days and my ORP hit 401 as of this morning!

I also added a seperate ORP controller yesterday so that I had an additional ORP probe on a seperate system and now use the Apex as a fail safe. That probe is still settling out so I will be curious as to how the new controllers accuracy compares to the accuracy of my Apex ORP probe as it is a year old. I do believe its accurate as it was just cleaned in vinegar and recalibrated. Prior to cleaning, it matched the values of my Red Seas Ozone generator/controller (only being used as a monitor) as well so I am pretty confident. I also have a new spare lab grade probe just in case its needed.

Prior to adding the ozone reactor, my tank was pretty steady between 300 and 360 ORP without ozone which has been the case for many months.

I am heading to Vegas for a week later today as I have a trade show to attend so I decided to turn the Ozone gererator off while I am gone so its one less thing to worry about. I felt this would be smart as it is new and I still want to monitor things closely.

As it sits now, I am VERY pleased with the results Due to the slow water volume through the reactor coupled with length of time the water spends going through the highly ozonated air inside the reactor, it appears to be a very efficient means of using the ozone. If my ORP numbers prove to be accurate as I suspect they are, I may not need to increase my Ozone volume at all due to the efficiency of the reacor which would coincide with what Ozotech told me and what Avast also suspected.

The last of the 2 LED fixtures should arrive sometime next week so I expect to get them installed either next weekend when I get back from my trip or the week following next.

Hey Scott, i've been following the "ever lasting saga of scott's big 500" as jim calls it :), and I can't wait to see the new LED's in. I myself am going to be taring down my 125 Gal. and start it fresh again, this time as a reef with LED. The results should be awesome!

I ended up fixing my leak last night and letting it run overnight. No obvious leaks as of this morning. I need to make a couple adjustments but it seems to be working well.

Here are a couple lousy pictures of the install. Nothing special though.

Hey Scott,
Did you have to use an air dryer for the ozotech posieden or does this model not require one?

Nothing like starting a tank off fresh again. At least once your done with it! Yea, I cant wait to see the LED's installed either. I am sure it will make for an interesting couple episodes as there will be some demolition involved (hacking out the old light rack). There's an ozone reactor install episode in the works as well. I'm the poster child of the perfect cadidate for him as I am always doing something to my system to improve upon it or make it more efficient. .. At least in theory. I hope people can learn from it. I actually enjoy sharing it and Jim's videos are a great venue for me to let my "ham side" out. Even if its helping people to learn from my mistakes!

I didn't go with a dryer. The feeling I got from Ozotech was that it was not needed as I don't have it in a very humid environment. The tank, sumps and main pumps are isolated from the closet that the ozone equipment is in. I suspect if it is to become a problem, the tell tale sign would be condenstation in the air line between the ozone generator and the ozone reactor. That or condensation in my dwyer meter which will result in visibly low SCH into the reactor. Time will tell but I think I will be fine without it. If not, its easy to add another brs reactor filled with dryer beads. :hmm4:

Thats Good, If you ever had to install dryer beads, you would quickly discover what a pain in the *** they are to constanty service. Your best bet would be kitty litter if you did end up installing one. :)

Wow, great thread & awesome tank. Thanks for sending me the link. Couldn't finish it last night and the Masters took time away today :).

You never did post pics of the car, you still in a corvette? 08 C6 myself... just another toy / hobby.

Last time I ran Ozone, I had the beads. While I am not the worlds greatest cook, it was hard to screw the beads up. I think the hardest part was keeping them off the floor before and after the oven.

Thanks for the compliments! As for the other hobby.. I'm on my second C6.. First was an 07 Convertible. My most recent is an 09 Z06.

Here ya go!

I was wondering if your going to run Ozone 24hours, or only after lights out?
somewhere i was looking and ozone spikes during light hours, and drops during lights out periods?

or will running LED's not effect Ozone because of less heat and other parameters???

Im only experienced at reading about ozone... lol.

My plan is to run it 24/7 or as needed. Since my refugium lights are on when my display lights are off, I don't anticipate any difference. I will admit this is first I've heard of ozone spikes so I never gave it a second thought.

I could be wrong..

If you hook an Orp probe in the sump, and record the values over a few days, see if it is increased during the day and lowered at night.
if so, then running it at night will create more consistency? its just an option.

but as mentioned. i dont run it, and have no current experience with it.....

My uncle has an 07 Convertible. It's SOOOO cool! As for the tank, I want to have it build into the wall in the entry room, with the back extended into my den where all the equipment will be housed. Should look really nice. I have NOOO idea how to cut drywall, and NO idea how much it would cost to get it cut. And another thing, I could just build a nice sturdy plywood stand for the tank, but i'd rather get a steel/metal stand and I'll just put a nice stained wood "squirt" around it on the den side. Any idea where to get a metal stand? I live in mid-city los angeles.

Nice car Slief, you have good taste. If I have money one its going to be a Nissan Skyline GTR here in South Africa.

Thank you!

Scott nice vette!
When are you cruising through the canyon again ?

Not sure.. It's been a while since I was on the vette forum but I need to check in there to see when the next cruise is.

It looks like the last 2 LED fixtures are out for delivery and should arrive here today. I plan on getting them ready for the rack this weekend but likely wont install the new rack until next week as I am waiting for a couple larger pullies for my light rack lift. I will update the thead later this weekend.

The ozone reactor is working well. I turned the ozone off while I was in Vegas and fired it back up last weekend when I got back. No leaks and no ozone smell under the tank so the new carbon reactor is doing its job well.

I also have a couple EB4's coming so I can add more controllable power outlets to my Apex. One EB4 will go above the tank for the LED fixtures. The other is going in the garage so I can use my Apex as a failsafe for my chiller. That will be fun as I have to run a custom 60' USB type cable from my tank to the garage and it will have to go though 3 walls in route to the garage.. Big fun!

Thats all for now.

Your tank looks great.First time i saw it was on Lafishguys channel on youtube and its just awsome. And im happy you made it a reef cus i must say it looks better.Ive just became a memmber here and i look forward to see your tank muture.

Thanks Ted.. Good choice in joining RC. Its a great community with an infinate amount of information!

Now for another update. I just finished mounting my last two LED fixtures that just arrived. I have come to the conclusion that I will need to add some more structure to my light rack as I am getting a bit of a bow in the center due to the 2 fixtures in the middle of the rack. I will probably address the bow by adding a couple pieces of "L" shaped aluminum extrusions to the top of the rack running down the length of it.

The 2 center fixtures are supported by 2 RAM ball mounts on each fixture. This allows me to angle them towards the center of the tank which should help to eliminate some of the light bleeding out onto the viewing panes. It should also help focus the light on the aquascape that covers my central overflow.

The plan is to rip the old rack and halides out next weekend and install the new one along with FRP on the inside walls of my light soffit above the tank.

I'm happy to say it's been a really long day! Got up early this morning and made a run to Home Depot to get some hardware, FRP and a bunch of other stuff. Jim showed up here at 10AM video camera in hand and we set out on a path of destruction. First thing I had to do was temporarily remove the ozone reactor from the closet. Then the hallides came out. Next I got my sawzall and cut the old light rack out.. I cut the old light rack wire ropes out, removed all the old pulleys and everything else associated with the light rack. At that point there was no turning back. I cut some FRP for the inside of the light soffet above the tank and lined the walls with it. Then came installing the new pulleys and new wire ropes.. What a pain in the rear end that was. All the new stainless cables that suspend the light rack are crimped together.

Once I had the new pulleys and cables hanging we put the light rack in. It had to go in in two pieces but that was the plan as it had to fit through the access doors which are only 38" diagonal. It was a tight fit but the light rack went in and together without a hitch. I hung the lights and mounted up an EB4 for power on the rack. I also mounted up a little RJ45 patch panel that I made which will be used to network the 4 LED fixtures together. I transferred my Neptune lunar sim modules and led's to the rack as well. Tomorrow I will wire it all up, update the firmware on the LED fixtures and fire them up.

Now its time to post some photos and have a cold beer or 3.

These pics were taken before I mounted the power, lunar sims and other stuff to the rack. I will have some updated photos tomorrow once I get everything all wired and cleaned up. These were taken with my iPhone so the quality could be better.
