My 540G Inwall Display Build Thread

Sorry for the delayed response. I got my water containers from a local company, saved me a lot on shipping. So far the humidity has not been an issue inside the house at anytime. The exhaust fan does a great job keeping it low. Out in the shed the humidity gets fairly high in the summer and in the winter when the shed is all sealed up. But based on my climate that is only for a few months in the summer and a few months in the winter. Right now I'm not using the heater for the shed at all. I'm letting the 800W worth of tank heaters do the work. I'm not sure if this makes more sence or if I should turn the shed heater on and give the tank heaters a bit of a break.

A bit of an update. I have been steadily adding fish and currently have a bunch more in QT waiting to go in right after Christmas. I have been struggling with mostly SPS for the past 2 months. Normally at this age of the tank its really hitting its stride and anything I add to the tank does well. But right now I'm having SPS brown/pastel out and sit like that for a month or two then bleach and like that for a few more week then die. All this right next to an SPS with great new growth on it. Usually corals bleach on me and then fully die within a few days but in this case I have corals that are bleachhing and staying white for months. I have even had a few bleached corals regain their full colors and start to grow again after a few months, something that has never happened to me in the past. All other types of corals seem to be fine. Over the past few weeks I have increased my water changes, started using MB7, started running carbon and a Purapad. Things seem to be a bit better and at least the cyano is mostly gone now.

just a question. are you only running the solar tubes, or are you running MH's between the tubes?

if so, are your deaths happening over the tubes and life above the MH's?
i only say this, because natural sunlight is very yellow, and will brown the coral.
and MH's have different color spectrum.

just a thought.
(in the wild, the natural sunlight is filtered by water and you loose a lot of the yellow, and they get more of the blue spectrum. )

The solar tubes are currently not in use, and have not been for about 2 months. Right now I'm using 4x400 hadlies with Radium bulbs, 1 over each rock pile.

Fantastic tank.

Do you feed your Morish anything special?

He eats everything you can think of including LPS and nips every now and then at an SPS but does no major damage to the SPS. I had to remove my chalices, favias and brains. So far he is leaving fungias, duncans, and zoos alone. It stinks to have to remove these corals but the fish is well worth it.

Thought I would share a few low grade video's I shot with my phone. Here is the living room side.

Love the Moorish Idol choice! Good luck with it, I hope I can have one some day

Hey man, thats good to hear. (better then having a crappy skimmer that cant do anything... haha.

Just a side note for you....
there is a guy with similar skimmer to you (volcano by Scott, not a BillWann although they are the same...)
he just upgraded to a baracuda-orca pump. he says that it works way better then the dart, and he doent have to run the air pump anymore...
here is the thread. i figured you might want it or ask the guy some questions..
i know you just purchased the new Dart/Orca pump... but its always nice to know ahead of time what you can or might do in the future. (give yourself options)

Beautiful build!!! I am hoping that you can answer a lighting question for me. I am in the process of having a 96x42x48" tank built by A.G.E. I always assumed that I would go with 4x400 Watt MH's and VH0's. On another post, a 48" deep build, you indicated that you installed 100 Watt Cannon LED's. What can you tell me about them? Do you have a link to the tank? How is the quality of light and the controllability of those fixtures.

Thanks!

I dont have a build thread to share with this tank but it is a 48" deep tank. It has 2x400w halides and 3 x 100 watt cannons. The cannons par is way too high for the upper rock work section, they are for the sand bed where I get about 200-250 par. They are not dimmable or controllable short of on and off. I wish they were as the white looks like a 10K and the blue looks like a 20K+, but if you mix them you get a good look. Here is a video, I will try to get another one today.

Thanks again for the tour today! What an awesome set-up; to see it in person was quite spectacular. Here are a few pictures that turned out:

Anytime! You saw me, I took about 100 pictures and these were the only ones that turned out. Key is to just take a bunch! I made quick video; I'll post that too in a bit.

Seeing your set up makes me want to get my systems up and running asap!
