MY 75 Gallon RR project and soon to be "former setup" DIAL UP BEWARE!

Rich, I was thinking about that which would be my last resort, still throwing around the idea of making my own doors, but all I have right now to play with is a circular saw, two charlie horses, a miter box & saw combo and some wood. No fancy table saws or routers or mechanical things like you lucky dogs.

The biggest doors they make at HD spans only 18 inches wide.

Steve, make me some doors :)

Hood is done!

Hood is done!

Materials used to finish the hood included:

two 24 inch piano hinges
a sheet of 1/8" plywood (only needed 60" X 14" for front, 60" X 21" for the top)
two 60" of 1X2 poplar

I used a few remnants of 1 X 2 pine lying around for the braces of the hood.

I test fitted the reflector with two pieces of POPLAR for the hinge point since it is stronger than pine. The hinge is not attached at this point and the sides have not been cut. This is how I determine what angle I cut the sides to get a feel for the final product.

So after that, I proceed to cut the angle for the opening. I then skinned the frame work to strengthen the hood further and to attach the final braces and support

A shot of the way the front will rest on top of the hood and where the hinge poiint shall be. I reinforced the framework prior to this shot.

Installation of the piano hinge, just the way the front naturally sits on the top of the hood.

Testing for movement and clearance. Perfect at first try!!!

So, the hood and hinge is done.

A test fitting of the Reflectors.....

Well. tomorrow the trim/moulding goes on. I should have this thing trimmed and hopefully sanded by the end if the week for stain next week.

I bought some Red Mahogany Stain today, I can't wait to see this thing stained!

That is an awesome canopy Merv... The access to the tank this way has got to be amazing...

You should sell the plan for it online! Well Done!

I wish I knew where to start. 50% split to anyone who wants to do it for me :D since I hold the copyright (he he he, I wish)

Trimwork today!!!

Trimwork today!!!

I had to do the trim today to speed things up a bit. I was gonna put the trim on when I get the tank, but i couldn't wait.

Here is my trusty miter box and saw. No powertools for this poor reefer! I almost felt sorry for having excess moulding. At $3.57/foot, it ain't cheap!

trim1.jpg

Here is how I installed the moulding. I placed a brace inside the cutout for the front access to prevent it from opening/moving. I then threw on the moulding which will be later cut when the glue is set, that'll be tomorrow :D

The front part of the hood looks like it's shorter because it is :D I shortened it to prevent rubbing against the front trim on the top of the tank.

trim2.jpg

On went some more trim for the corners as well. The bottom part of the tank will match. I was thinking of adding rossettes to the corners, but they looked too "busy" to me.

The moulding for the bottom is the same. this is without the front vertical corner trim.

trim4.jpg

..........and how the front will look like
trim5.jpg

the top of the trim comes up about 1.5" to accomodate for the trim/lip of the tank. I think that the tank trim is about 1" (forgot to call Miracles in Glass today), but I can always place styrofoam under the tank to elevate it more so it's flush.

The bottom part of the HOOD is the same way, I can always prop up the hood to accomodate for the trim.

Looking really good, Merv. You are moving really fast, that's good. Once you're married you won't have as much free time. j/k :p

Concept,

On the first page of this thread you are cutting a hole in a tank to make your sump..
I am looking at purchasing a dremel and some bit to pratice drilling on some old tanks but not sure what bits to get.. Thought maybe you might remeber the part # or exact description of the bits you used??
I notice there are two different diamond cutters, one is a wheel and the other has more of a drill look to it..
Any guidence would be appreciated.
Thanks,

Thanks,

The circular cutter is for tile/ceramic/glass and it was over $12 at HD, maybe a bit more. I used the other bit to just clean up the edges of the glass.

Steve68 uses similar bits, he's the guy you wanna ask: he's infatuated with drilling glass!

Sorry, i threw out the box so I don't have the part #

Cool.. I will ask him .. Thanks for the info.

okay, I had to run to HD since I miscalculated my moulding, needed 4 more feet.

I stopped by the tool section and it's the diamond wheel cutter for $14.99. Of course, I forget the model number, but it's the only one dremel sells.

On to sanding the stand!!!
