My 90 - first "real" reef - Pic Thread

goo, would you please tell me more about your new flow device for your tank? I ordered 60 pounds of baserock from hirocks.com and will be adding it to my tank soon. The powerheads may become an issue and need replacing.

i have had my share of experiences with powerheads and i absolutely despise the look of them in the tank, also, they are fixed flow - no rotation what so ever.

I got a seaswirl 3/4" model and it feeds my tank from the sump.
It rotates 90 degrees and spreads the 730gph from a mag 9.5 all over the tank - so it has a much better distribution of flow all over rather than a fixed flow.

Great thread. I have a 90 gallon tank also. Sorry about the jumper. I'm surprised about the ich outbreak however. You have a UV sterilzer on? How many watts? Nice thing about corals is they never jump.

Ya know.. I just realized I did not include my UV in tank specs early on in the thread.

I have one, a 9W TurboTwist UV. I only have it for water clarity though.

Still laughing at your comment about corals never jumping.. My fish are just supplementary in this tank.. Trying to make sure most of them serve a purpose though. But seeing some activity in the tank is always nice.

I am going to replace my royal gramma and attempt to put in a juvenile perc with hopes of it eventually pairing off with my existing perc. I am also going to add a few more blue/green reef chromis to the tank. I currently only have one.

That order will be placed within the next day or so.

One more thing... I do not care for the egg crate that I put on top of my tank to prevent jumping. It blocks out a good bit of light, especially on the ends and in the middle. :(

I hate to spend a lot of money purchasing a canopy......

Here are some pictures (as posted in another thread):

It does look very good installed though and is hardly noticable from the front:

I tried my best to plan out where to place the rbta ahead of time. I made a nice crevice for it to settle in, a medium flow area a bit below one of my powerheads. The best thing is that the anemone has never moved form that spot! :)

I added one of these rose anemones to my tank Friday and he disappeared into my live rock sometime Sunday night. Is that common? Will it reappear? Or should I dig in to the 135# of live rock to look for it?

As if you can't tell....this is (was) my first anemone.

I do not know enough about the rbta's to answer that question but... The first one I got, that died, disappeared into my rockwork after the second day. When i found it, the thing was nearly dead. I believe it would always seek good lighting unless stressed. Good luck.

How long did you acclimate it for?

If it were me though I would try to find it because if it is dead or dying then that may cause some probs w/tank. Ammonia spikes form decay, etc.

I tried to aclimate it as the LFS instructed taking about 2 hrs. Maybe that wasn't enough?

I will dig into the LR pile in the a.m. to see what I find. This should prove to be interesting...

I did my second/replacement rbta for four hours. I'd only done the first one for two hours. My method is to add 1/8 a cup of water to the back every 5 to 7 minutes for the four hours, after floating the bag the initial 15 minutes.

That seems to work well for me. I generally try to do fish for two hours and corals/inverts for 3 to 4 hours now. HTH

I had to jump in here as we had problems with dead/low flow spots in our tank. With a 150g and 300lbs lr, this was almost unavoidable. Although I hate the looks of the ph's in the tank, we purchased a few small (1200) maxijets and managed to hide them mostly behind the rockwork. We just added Hydor deflectors to the maxijets. This replaces the output tube on the maxijets. It rotates and has a deflector that swirls the water 360 degrees, which hits just about everywhere behind the rocks. Great little units. :)

I am most likely going to replace the maxijets with some SEIO pumps. My problem with the MJ's is that the flow is simple not enough.

Yes, I did. A bit pricey for what I want to accomplish though. Also, I do not want it to feed off my outtake form my sump.

by the way....about the eggcrate...you can cut out bigger pieces to let more light in. so every 4 cubes become one big cube

Well today is the day I get my base rock in from hirocks.com. I ordered 60 pounds of it and I hope to get it all into the tank very soon.
