My attempt at breeding black clowns (in a 28 gallon mixed reef)

Quick update, I had gone over a week without any losses up until yesterday when two of the little guys died on me. All of the other 40+ fish are doing good and growing larger each day.

Very cool thread, i'm subscribed so I can keep up. What are you gonna do with all the new percs your hopefully gonna have?

Are you considering collecting another clutch yet? And props for a great first attempt! 40 is impressive.

I would if I saw another batch of them. They really ****ed off their anemone with the 1st clutch and it moved. Hopefully they will lay eggs again.

How about a quick video instead of pictures?

Great thread! I'd be very interested in hearing about the relative success of Otohime A (compared with other feeds) over at The Breeder's Registry. And gotfrogs - we'd love to get a Spawning Report from you for the Black Oscellaris with a description of the pros and cons of your various feeding strategies.

I'll start pushing people I see to report there Tom :) I tend to get a lot of emails about it on a fairly regular basis.

I got a request for helpful hints and a list of products that I am using. I am going to post them here so that everyone can view them. This is a random stream of info
"¢ I had a small batch of eggs, I think this helped me out. I probably only started with 150 fry (out of ~250 eggs), lost about 35 the 1st night and then the losses tapered off.
"¢ Start with a small rearing tank (I used a 5.5 gallon tank with about 3 gallons of water in it.
"¢ Salt: reef crystals (this is what I had on hand and is generally not recommended for rearing young fish)
"¢ Soon after finding my first clutch of eggs I ordered supplies from http://www.reed-store.com/ This was a big expense I think I ended up paying $240 but I know without it I would not have had the success that I had with the fry.
o Rotifer Starter Kit - Deluxe (If I did it again I would get the basic kit)
o Nannochloropsis 3600 - 1 Quart Bottle (18% dry weight) (I have not used this yet but I am out of the Rotifer Diet that was included with the starter kit and will have to start using it) The good thing about this stuff is that you can split the container up into smaller batches and freeze it.
o Otohime Starter Kit "“ This is a dry food that you can start offering at around day 7
"¢ I started two rotifer cultures in 5 gallon (white) salt buckets with about 4 gallons of water in them. I used a SG of about 1.02, room temperature (~78F), aerated with an air stone. I fed the cultures with Rotifer Died about 3 times a (several drops until light green in color). I have lost my desire to keep up with these cultures now that they are not being used and they are lucky if they get fed every other day. Hopefully I will be able to revive the cultures when a new batch of clown fish eggs arrive.
"¢ I collected the rotifers with a paper coffee filter while my professional filter was being delivered. The BB-PC 4 inch dia 53 micron seive from florida-aqua-farms.com works much faster.
"¢ Get Joyce's Clownfishes book and read chapters 7-10 several times
"¢ I offered my ~7 day old clowns baby brine shrimp that were hatched from Decapsulated Artemia Cysts (that expired back in 2007!) from http://www.seahorsesource.com
"¢ Ask lots of questions on RC and hope someone as nice as rkelman replys.

Lol I'm glad to help gotfrogs. I'm really happy you've had such success. 40 from your first batch is a real success story. Where's the dang pics? :)

Just wanted to say hi and congratulations it is so cool to be able to do this. I did it one time with gold stripped maroons and had a thread here but that was a couple years ago. I have a few grandchildren here and there yet but everyone was afraid of the maroons.

I now have a pair of black clowns also and hope they will spawn someday and I will try again.

Again very cool, I know the feeling and it is an accomplishment you can be proud of.

Love the pictures of the eggs! I only have a point and shoot camera so I have a very hard time taking any decent photos.

Mako, awesome pic! I have yet to see a picture like this. It's neat to see the change in eggs from day to day. Kudos!

I also have to say great job with those pictures! My favorite is day five, the egg in the middle looks like he is smiling. :)

Thanks, I never noticed the smiller before but he sure is smiling. will be watching this thread to see how your babies turn out they are looking great so far.
