My Bacteria Driven Journey

Hey guys, I have a 90G tank and I'll start dosing vodka within the next two weeks, the thing is it will be impossible for me to find the microbacter7 here in Canada, so I was thinking of using Zeobak, is it possible? Thanks in advance.

I belive that the ZeoBac will be fine. I alternate ZeoBac and MB7 to diversify the bacterial life within the tank. I used full Zeo at first then went to Vodka as a carbon source (Start2, Zeo's carbon source is $$$$) and it worked fine.

I'm using a 3 cc or 3 ml syringe for adding drops of MB7 for my daily dose. Is this okay? What are you guys using? A medicine dropper or something? Just want to make sure I'm doing it right.

I just gently tip the bottle over the tank and let 5 drops drop in...if it's 4 or 6, I don't worry too much. Your way is more accurate.

Just a quick update.... Here we go again! :D

I know it's been quite some time, but I decide to start this up again. I've slowly been noticing nuisance algae beginning to creep up in my tank again as well as a slight change in the color of my coral. I mainly attribute this to my recent move and the fact that I'm only around the tank 1 day per week. So many maintenance tasks go undone until I return and are basically only getting done once per week. However, it looks there is a pretty good chance I could be moving back to PA in around a month. So for the time being I have resumed Microbacter 7 dosing, and plan on following my previous blueprint.

So for the next 2 weeks I'll be dosing the Microbacter 7 according to the medium-to-high nutrient dosage which will be 10 ml (2 capfuls) to the tank daily.

Also, Kent Lugol's Solution will be dosed at 1 drop, once per week.

I will not be dosing Vodka during the initial phase, and may even wait 4 weeks this time before starting it up depending on when I move home.

I'll be back in PA on Friday, and will hopefully get some updated pictures. Everything in the tank has been doing well and growing.... but as I mentioned, I have noticed a slight decline (to my standards) over the past month or so that I have been gone.

great post tswifty, been following and im curious on how this vodka method would be efective against dictoya algae, ive been battling it for quite some time.

Im not sure how people like chingchai are able to feed so aggressively without having a ULNS and not really worry about rising nitrates and phospates, I have been increasing my feeding and the corals have grown so much that they are starting biological warfare in places or starting to shade other corals stealing the light.

Since this increase in feeding ive noticed that the CYNO was starting to form on teh sandbed again so i did a 10 gal WC and tried to siphon as much out as possible,

Sometimes its frustrating and discouraging

Smokenax are you running a refugium? I took mine out last year when I coverted to carbon/bacteria. When PO4 and NO3 are in line not much of any algae will live.

Padrino, I look a cyno as a secondary filter and water tester. I also think cyno may at time bloom when nutrient levels drop.

All in all cyno is very persistent stuff.

TJ did this as well and i don't understand how you guy have that. I have been dosing vodka for almost 8 most with MB7 and my refugium needs to be cleaned of cheato every 2 weeks. Perhaps its because of my design of sump. When i initially setup my sup the drain is split in two. Water is sent to teh skimmer section and the rest goes through the refugium, Both empty into the return section. Perhaps that is why mine flourishes??? Seriously cheato goes like crazy
