My Bacteria Driven Journey

Thanks for the kind words.

I hadn't heard about the swap, so thanks for pointing it out. I'm about to start a new job, so I'll have to see what my schedule looks like come January.
Hope to see you there! Should be a killer swap tons of awesome raffles. Also Chris Brightwell will be there to answer questions.

Finally have some negatives to report.

Over the past 2 weeks, the tank has been really getting neglected. My schedule has become very busy as well as my little sister's. So the dosing of both MB7 and Vodka has been getting skipped quite often. Cyanobacteria has finally begun appear on some of the rockwork, so I'll need to make some adjustments in order to eradicate it. Also, we experienced an extended power outage (I was unable to get to the tank) and I lost my 3 Bartlett Anthias and a few small coral frags as a result.

Today I'm going to be spending a lot of time working on the tank... performing a 20% water change, changing carbon, testing, dosing only MB7 as well as deciding on a new dosing plan to move forward from here.

Hopefully I will be moving the tank over to my current residence soon, as most of the current losses/problems I feel would have been easily avoidable if the daily tasks were being performed.

Water Parameters from today.

try toothbrush the cyano and while changing the water to siphon it out.
It came off really easy with a turkey baster, and I was able to siphon it out.
Sorry to hear that but I know you'll bounce back.
Thanks. I'm really just primarily upset about the fish loss since it was pretty much out of my control. As far as the other developments, it's nothing that I feel can't be corrected within a couple of weeks. It just goes to show you how important consistency is when running this type of system.

:)

Thats why I am kind of skeptical about the vodka thing.. you have to keep on top of things religiously like you are one long term closed loop controller.
Where as a system with a bunch of chaeto or DSB export the nutrients stably and you are able to go on vacation and only worry about power outage.

I've got a question how long would a 500 ml bottle of MB7 last me with 150 gallons of water? I'm trying to find out the cost effectiveness of this method, and I'm really interested in trying it.

My DSB system crashed after two years. HA took over and i almost left the hobby. Carbon dosing kept me going.

Sorry for your losses TJ.
Thats one of the bad aspects of not being clsoe to the tank at all times. Something that stresses me each time I travel... hopefully your tank will soon be in your new home and that you'll be able to automate all those dosings...

Baldwin, I'd order the 2L bottle. The first two weeks of seeding you will use alot. The shelf life is many years so you'll use it before it goes bad.

So it seems theres more then one way to filter?
Hmmm imagine that :lolspin:

I had the same issue as you in my 55, Zedar. But... My DSB was only 3 inches deep, and I don't think I properly seeded it (I used the 'bagged' live sand), plus I ran with a really crappy Red Sea Prism skimmer for a while, so I think it was my fault. IMO, DSBs can work, but can also be a risk. I miss the sand with BB though...

I have sand in my tank. Just not very deep. And i stir it often.
