what kind of rocks were they, the dry rocks? Just curious, because I just ordered 50 pounds of the dry Tonga shelf, and if they're creating high phosphate levels, that's good to know in advance!

I had two kinds ffrom marco... Shelf and figi. I think the problem was, that I didn't cook them long enough so they are finishing in my tank.

I can see how you would want to cook the Fiji, but why bother with the dry shelf? Isn't a good rinsing enough?

Yep. I'm leaving Sunday morning so... I'm going to keep the lights on til Saturday night... and put new carbon and GFO in the reactors and new filter socks and let the darkness kill as much of the algae as possible until Tuesday. I'll do a 20% water change when I get back and then we'll see what we have.

Does anyone think it would help to wrap the tank with a blanket? The tank is in a pretty well lit room. No direct sunlight... just bright.

There's a pick 5 or 6 pages back that shows a dead mussel that came out of a piece of shelf rock when I broke it. There is a lot of die off on these rocks.

thanks, guess I missed that. Was thinking of cycling mine in a new tank, but now I'm having second thoughts about that plan :twitch:

I bet the wife really regrets getting you that first tank now!

Not something we talk about much... Let's just say that... When she wants to go shopping, she gets to go shopping.

you would still have a cycle.

I know you're right... I'm just sure I made it worse.

I cured my rock in a 10:1 water/vinegar solution for 3 days with powerheads in the bucket. I wish now... that I had doubled the vinegar and the time.

Well... I got home last night and the brown algae is 50 times worse. It is everywhere... even on the sand. Is there anything I can do... or should do? Should I put in a clean up crew?

I tested my topoff and stored salt water and they tested zero for phosphates. So they are leaching from inside the tank. I put some marco rocks in a gallon of salt water and I will test it tonight... to see if they are coming from the rocks.

try to use po4 removal al base first for couple week, al base quicket absorb po4 then fe base.
turn the light off is good idea.

I am a firm believer in cycling a new tank slowly with nothing but the salt water you're using. There are tricks like vineger etc. that can speed up killing and degeneration of tissues but in the long run I believe that you get more out of your rock by letting it take care of itself slowly and naturally. When I start a new tank I let it run with lights out. sometimes it can take up to 4 weeks before it stabilizes. Let the stuff rot and let the good bacteria grow. No worries. Seeding with well established rock and sand can help immensely as well

Do zou have anz live rock or live sand in zour fuge ...Give it some time ...Then you can pop a couple damsels in zour fuge or green chromis in the display. The extra poop and fish food wil help. Like everone is saying take it slow before adding any livestock or corals..
