My Black Ocellaris pair are spawning!!!

Rkelman,

This is a great thread you got going. My clown just lay some eggs on Tuesday. This is the second time she laid eggs. I didnt know what to do because it was on my pink lobo. The first batch hatch and it was all eaten up by my tangs and other fish in the tank. I dont really have time to setup a tank like what you have going but i do have a 35 gals hex that is attach to my main tank. I use that hex for frags but since i sold everything from the tank, I was think of trying to raise the baby clowns in it. Here is my setup from my 120g to the 35g hex. The chiller pump, pump water from my sump in the hex and it overflow back to the sump. I was thinking of about shutdown the chiller pump and using an airline tubing to pump water from the main tank down to the hex and the hex to the sump, of course i have to put a air pump for air and a heater in the hex since a little amount of water from the main tank is going into the hex. I will try to raise them like that. What do you think? and Does this make any sense to you? Thanks

"you are lucky, that make it extremely easy to catch them all and raisethem all LOL "

Ya easy... :) I'll just do the Orange guys this batch I think.

Reef211: I think that hex is way to big. You would need a massive amount of Rots and phyto to support the relatively small amount of fry. Its not practical. You can buy a 10 or 5.5g tank so cheap you are best to just buy one.

I had a good hatch on day 8 this time with the orange guys! Hopefully I get good survival rates with them.

do u put rotifer food into larval tank too? if so how much do u feed /day?
do u keep salinity at 1.020 in larval tank? or .25?
thanks

I do put phyto in the larval tank for the first week. I tint the water pretty good with it. Its good to keep the Rots fed and I think it helps them feed as well. My Larval tanks start off at .025 which is where my broodstock are at. (only because they are in with corals)

Yesterday was pretty devastating here. I lost probably 1000 to 1500 fish yesterday. I went downstairs and my return pump wasn't running and all the fish were laying on the bottom. So since the black O's eggs hadn't hatched yet I hurried and setup a larval tank for them. In the future I am going to have my Apex control everything down there as well but I haven't bought the hardware yet. Which really sucks because it would have caught this before it got so out of hand. I am going to try and setup a float in the sump this weekend to sound an alarm in case this happens again. I'm not sure if it will work as its a long way from the Apex upstairs. We were so exited about the orange guys now we are pretty bummed. 75% of our larger 6 month + stock is dead.

Ouch, all that investment down the drain so to speek, I feel sorry for ya. I know not only the money but the time that has to be put into raising fish is huge.

Did you have an airline running in your tanks along with the filter system? If not do you think that would have saved them? I'm sure it would have bought some time but I don't know how much. The oxygen demand on a heavily stocked tank has got to be huge.

Thanks Joe the pump is still working. I think what may have happened is I had an airstone in the sump that may have been too close to the pump and it started to cavitate. I was really overworking the pump so any loss in flow would be enough to stop all flow to the tanks. Its no longer an issue now because of the loss of fish I took 3 tanks offline this morning. I'll have to upgrade the pump soon. I am going to wire up a float sensor to the apex tomorrow on a timer so it will warn me if the sump level is high for a period of time.

I didn't have airlines running into the individual tanks although an air delivery system to each tank is a great idea birddog486. I may just plum airline to each tank. I think that would have helped immensely. The temperature wasn't too bad it was just the lack of oxygen.

I pulled the tile of eggs from the black guys last night. I'm surprised the black ones didn't hatch last night. Tonight is day 10 for the eggs. Very strange. We are going back to heavy feeding to get stock levels back up.

The orange guys look pretty good after day 3 and are eating well. I have had some loss but not too much. Overall they are doing well. Hopefully I can keep up with the Rots having 2 fresh hatches at the same time.

Thanks guys. Yes the Breeding pairs are ok. I've installed my float alarm for the sump. Now if the pump turns off the water level rises in the sump. After 15 minutes my Apex will start beeping then text and email me.

I'm waiting for my eggs to hatch, they are in the tank. Did you turn off all your pumps when you thought the eggs were going to hatch?

Ok update time. I'm moving on from the tragedy of loosing all those fish. Here's some pics of the new babies. They got their headstripes thursday. A couple are getting the second stripe already. I put a sponge filter in with them this morning. They are looking really good with reasonable losses for a first lay.

Here's a couple of the black O's that were laid on the same day as the Orange guys. They hatched I think 2 days after the orange ones. What a difference in size and development. I was hoping they would hatch the same night so I could compare / record how fast they develop compared to regular O's under near identical conditions.

I'm building a larval setup this weekend to keep all my larvae tanks in the same spot. I think it will be 6 10g eventually. They will all be stand alone tanks. I'll post pics when I get it done.

Also for anyone considering UV on their growout, If you haven't done it already do it! I can't believe how much clearer my water is. I have a Pentair QL 40w sterilizer and it works great.

Hey Rkelman,

You have beeen a huge inspiration to my wife and I. We've been following your thread for a long time and both of us are really bumbed about the pump issue.

About 4 months ago we setup 9 pairs and finally... and I mean :bounce3: "FINALLY!!!" :bounce3: got our first clutch of eggs. So be it they're false, not the b/w or picassos, but that's ok.

Their silver eyes  started showing 3 days ago so we pulled them tonight (wife says ~day 6-7). I've setup a sponge with a low GPH power head on top. It's pulling from the sponge and blowing over the eggs. I'm trying to simulate the male fanning. I don't know if it will work, but we'll see.

By the way, I'm finding myself using you old technique of counting the eggs. Is that funny or what? I guess it's the excitement of being a neebee.

"Tank" You and keep up the good work! ,
Bexar & Tracy

Last night our fry hatched. Unfortunately the power sponge device I made pushed up against the glass by the powerhead. This caused about 80% mortality and was a major flaw I didn't foresee. So far the device is a failure! I switched back to an airline with the sponge until further notice.

Rkelman, didn't you use a sponge filter from day 1? Also, do you keep a room light on at all times or just for the feeding? I want to do my best to keep what I have alive. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you,
Bexar
