My Black Ocellaris pair are spawning!!!

Well of the new batch I'd say I have 70-75 left. I had one day I lost 14 then another 6 I think. I siphoned out 1 or 2 today as well. Its hard to tell really how many there are for sure. I did a 30% water change yesterday with water from the parent tank. I did another today. I'm keeping the water tinted green and have been adding Rots twice a day. They all appear to be in good health now and have full silver bellies. I hope my other 2 bottles of phyto finish greening up soon. I'm getting low. I have Rotifers coming out my ears though :) I fed some partially grown Brine Shrimp to the first hatch yesterday. It was really funny to watch. They kind of shy'ed away at first but then they would eat a few of the smaller ones. The big ones seemed to be able to swim through the school with impunity. They all just gave them space. One time when they were through a brave soul followed them and nipped at one. In reaction the Shrimp turned and came at its pursuer and the little Clown turned around and bolted back to his siblings evading the monster shrimp. :) Today I fed them some more and it was a free for all. Big and small the Brine Shrimp were dinner. It was funny watching a 3/8 in long clown with a Brine Shrimp hanging out of its mouth being chased by 10 others. I took my tile and drilled a hole in it so I could attach a piece of fishing line. I hung it over where they have been spawning. They were not impressed. Hopefully they lay on the tile this time. I'll get some more pics up soon.

They laid eggs on the tile! After only 11 days. I don't know if it makes a difference but I've been feeding them a couple times a day now. Finally.. I counted about 375 eggs this time. I took a couple pics of the younger fry this morning too. They aren't too fat in the morning. I probably should have taken more with their silver bellies tonight. Now I have to drill another hole in a tile. Ugh. Unless someone has a better idea...

What kind of tile did you use? I have had a pair of true p. clowns for about 10 years but have never collected their eggs/fry. I think I will try and hang a tile over their spot and see if they will them on it.

Congrats on the tile! That will definitely make it easier for the hatch. I just put my hand in the tank and retrieve the tile. I want to make sure the eggs don't get disturbed. Be careful when you're pulling it up by the string!

I don't know what kind of tile it is. Any tile as long as its flat and a bit rough on one side will work.

Thanks. I didn't put the string on to retrieve the tile. The tile won't stay where I have it unless its suspended because of the shape of the rock. I couldn't find a better way to hold it there. I'll pick up the tile with my hand as well. With my luck it would flip over into the anemone. :)

Update already!!! This has been a riveting thread. I hope one day I can see my clowns do the same. For now they hang in the nem, eat and poop.

Ok I haven't updated in a while so here it is. Not very exciting really.

Here's the "old" guys in the growout tank. It looks really funny to have 29 tiny fish with all the empty space but oh well. I'm going to use a divider and put the second batch in there too.

Here's the latest clutch of eggs. They will hatch Wed night hopefully. I'm going to move them over to the larval tank wed.

The new guys weren't very cooperative. They were swimming way to fast to get a good picture. They are 10 days old and eating BBS like champs. I decapsulated my first brine eggs tonight. We'll see how that works. I hate shells. I had one die today for some reason... He was spinning around like crazy when I checked on them after work. This is my first meta / post meta loss.

This guy "owns" the heater. Its funny he'll defend it too.

Here's my larvae tanks as they are setup now. This was taken before I moved the older ones to growout. The sponge filters seem to be cycled now and water changes aren't required as often / extensively.

That's all I have for now. I'll update again with new developments.

What sponge filter are you using, is it the Azoo Oxygen Plus Bio-Filter 8? If no, which one? I like the way they look.

Awsome :)

Why not put some fake corals or PVC structures in the larger clowns growout tank? it wont looks so empty then :)

i always used hydrosponge in my freshwater days they are a superior product to the others IMO.

Jovanna anything like PVC that he puts in there will just cause them to fight over it i think.

rkelman those things are so very cute.

I would like a little rock or something for them. We'll see. These guys get along great. The younger ones seem to bicker more. Its strange they are more umm.. Hostie? Some are claiming the heater. I have one that thinks the entire filter is his. I might try. Maybe some tacky FW deco? Thanks GSM I think so too :)

Well of the 65 that hatched I have about 5 left. This morning I looked and there was maybe 20 that I could see. Now only 5. I'm not sure what happened as everything was done the same. The only thing I noticed was tonight there didn't seem to be many rotifers in the tank. I had fed this morning before going to work. Perhaps the density just wasn't high enough. There was also some BBS in the tank and some eggs. I assume it came from one of the various utensils I use between everything I have going on. I doubt that's the issue. I do have glass lids on the tank now but I don't see what that would do. The temp ect is good. Unfortunately I think I'm going to have to clean everything and try again in two weeks.
Joyce did mention that they are ravenous eaters as fry and they will attempt to eat artemia but will die when it gets lodged. The BBS eggs will also cut their digestive track and they will die. So maybe one of these happened.
My Ocellaris just started laying last week...spring fever?
I'll try a clutch but she is 10 years old (at least) so I've heard that most breeders stop at 6.
Just an FYI she was 10+ years, only clown in tank for 6 years, introduced a 8 month old juvenile which became a male. They went to each other like long lost friends (lovers more like it), because of their size and she was already a female, and laid their first clutch of about 60 eggs 1 month to the day I introduced him.

This is an inspirational thread though, I just started with my cultures and I want to get that system down first :)

wow dude!!! that is really cool. i just saw this thread for the first time and read through most of it. that is just awesome that you had spawning going on in your tank. and were able to keep a few of the little guys congrats man i hope some day it happens to my tank. keep up the good work and good luck!!!

Thanks DC I think so too :) Ok I filled a tank 1/2 full with water from the DT and took the tile out and put it in tonight. They weren't impressed with me.. I had to prop it up on a rock (scrubbed) I hope I have the bubbles right. They should hatch tonight. This time I replaced the tile with a taller one I I don't need the fishing line again. I have no idea why I didn't do it in the first place.. A little slow I guess. I had 6 of the younger ones die today. I checked the water and its ok. They had eaten all the BBS and Rots that were in the tank and the water was crystal clear. They couldn't have starved. They had lots of food this morning. Maybe my decapsulated BBS had something to do with it? I went back to normal hatching tonight.
