My Breeding attempt - Perculas:

Well something is going on at night because last night i took a picture of the eggs and if i had to guess i would say 70-80 of them; this morning there are only 15 eggs left:eek1:

The eggs were laid on the 19th which makes today the 6th day they did not look to me like they were ready to hatch, although i looked back in my notes and the last nest disappeared on the 6th day as well.

The have been taking 9 days to hatch before; my reef tank has been a bit warmer than usual tank usually runs between 78-80 degrees, This last week it has been from 78-82;

Anybody think it's the higher temperature causing them to hatch sooner or is there something eating them i am a little confused at this point.

The eggs did not look ready to hatch they had just turned brown a couple of days ago and i really did not see the silver tips on them.??

Any ideas????

dazed, I would bet they are hatch over two night, starting on day 6. My maroon eggs are hatching one day early then normal, due to the warmer weather. My are hatching on day 4 and day 5. 90% hatch on day 5 now.

Update time: Yesterday was a busy day for me my wife had surgery so i was at the hospital all day long; when i got home i had planned to take the remaining eggs and move them to the larvae tank (the 15 or so that were left) but when i got home around 4:00 there were no eggs at all on the tile. So i guess they either finished hatching yesterday morning before the lights came on at 12:30 or they were eaten by whatever not sure what happened because i was not home. So again i have no eggs to try with for now.

Now that i have some more time waiting for more eggs i have a couple of questions i guess:

1: Could the eggs be developed enough to be hatching on the 6th day? For some reason i thought it was 7 days or more?
but i guess it's possible "agsansoo" said his are hatching on day 4 and day 5?

2: Can i take an ammonia test of my phyto bottles and get an accurate level? or will the phyto inter with the test results?

Kind of bummed out as i was ready to try again; but back to waiting for more eggs for me....

Obviously your wives welfare is priority here, hope all went well with that!
Good thing is that the clowns should be at it again soon enough... again, I'll be here waiting and reading!!! GL

Hope your wife is alright.

You really need to try and figure out what is happening to them. If you can't just try pulling them early and see what happens. What have you got to lose.

Thanks for the kind words; yes all went as planned she is just going to need time to recover & heal; which leaves me to running the house lol....
My 2 little girls have been a big help so far, might have been best to skip this batch anyway as there are just allot of things going on right now

Thanks Fb; she is resting & has all the good drugs :D I was listening to the RN yesterday about all the stuff i have to do and i said yeah i can do all of that but where is my prescription:lol:

I think you are right i might just pull the next ones early.

I plan to drain my science experiment (larvae tank) today; it still has rotifers and brine in it i plan to place them in my 5g bucket of everything for now.

I remember you mentioning that you thought your heater, airstone were holding good bacteria where should i place mine to try and keep it? I was thinking of just leaving them unplugged and maybe submerged in the rotifer tanks?

as they say everything happens for a reason. Good luck around the house :rolleye1: and best wishes to your wife and all!

In a rotifer culture might be ok. If you have a sump on another tank that is probably best.

Hope your wife has a speedy recovery.

Bill thank you for the kind words as well.
I do have a question for you. I picked up some Cloram-X along with my starter pack of food from reed.

I just read on their website that the dosage is 1 teaspoon (5ml) per 10 gallons of water. Does that sound about right?? I read the dosage on the bucket and it is confusing the amounts are listed in much larger dosages then i would need for a larvae tank.

It actually says 1/4 teaspoon per 10 gallons.

cloram-x

Right again; i was staring at the chart and for some reason did not see that; i think i need some sleep:D

So instead of using prime or amquel would i just dose the cloram-x at the correct amount i really want to try and keep the ammonia at bay on my next attempt.

sorry if i missed it but how long did you soak the algae disks? And do you just soak it in water that the sg is at 1.019. and did you sterilize the water and if so with what?

For sterilizing a small amount of water, 7-10 minutes in the microwave does the trick. Just be sure and let it cool before using it. I usually leave the layer of water on the disk overnight, same SG as I'll be culturing at.
