You don't have any old algae magnets to silicone to the side on the plastic container ?

I found one last night but it's to small i think. Edit; just got of the phone and my buddy has one to bring by my place tonight.

The issue is going to be the cutouts on the top of the tank i am afraid. I am hoping that the container is wide enough to make it work.

Suction cups from a powerhead also works too !

i thought of that as well it's just i hate those things with a passion.

Do you use a flashlight to try and attract them to the snagger.? Also do you turn off all your pumps so they don't get chewed up?

FB

FB; from my talking with agsansoo that's how i understand it is suppose to work. I was planning on using the nightlight from my tunze setup (single led) but what i failed to remember is that if i cut the power to the pumps the light won't work either.

So last night i set it up with a flashlight and used a piece of black construction paper and punched a hole in it to try and get just a bit of light focused on the cutout, you do turn of all of the pumps as well, I don't know how well my setup will work just yet but it seems to work for agsansoo so i have my fingers crossed.

I just set the flashlight on top of the tank pointing straight down. (finally a use for having that dumb cutout to have to work around); although the light source points straight down all the way to the sand in this configuration is that bad?

Do i need to angle the light source so it only points at the slot cutout?

I also have already had to make a couple of adjustments to the collector i posted in the picture above. I had to get a new container that is only 6" wide in order to be able to lift it in & out from my tank without having to tip it. (I have a top acrylic piece on my tank with 2 rectangle cutouts) and the first one would have to be tipped to far to the side to remove which is fine when empty but was going to be a major problem if it is filled with larvae.

For the pump i removed my mini jet 404 from my tlf carbon reactor and placed a ball valve in-line to control the flow, i just don't know if i have it setup with to much flow or not enough.

Yes you need to point the light directly at the side of the container with the slot. The larvae will head straight towards that single light source. The light should light up the area right above the slot. As the larvae head for the light, they get sucked into the slot. My light is dim enough that I can't see the catch until I take the container out of my tank, or turn the moon lights back on. Good luck fishing tonight !

ok thanks; well they did not hatch last night so tonight i think is the night, lol tonight would be day 9.

How long after lights out does it take for them to start hatching??
It made me a bit worried last night leaving all of the pumps off in the tank for about an hour, i think i remember reading something about not shining a light on the eggs to take a peek as this could cause them to either delay hatching or not hatch at all.

Is it best to wait until you know for sure they are hatching and then shut down the pumps in the reef??

They start hatching about 30-60 minutes after lights out. I leave my lights and pumps off for 1-1/2 hours on the night I think they will hatch. After the hour and a half, I either have larvae in the snagger or have to do it all over again the next night. Nothing was effected by it.

Very good to know i guess that is what i will try tonight.
How much flow do you use in the snagger i would guess it's a trial and error thing correct?

My tank is in my living room though, but it is in a corner of the room last night i turned off all the lights in the room and my wife and i were watching tv; but the tank corner was dark; think that might be an issue.

I might have to figure out a better way to aim the light as well not sure how i am going to do that though.

I drape a couple of towels over my tank to block out other light sources.

My tank is in a different room than the tv, but if there is a light on in the tv room, it will show up in the tank room.

Sorry to be a day late with this idea -- hope you had great snagging success!

Well here is an update on what happened over the weekend. On Saturday night i shut down all pumps, etc. (for 1 & 1/2 hours) setup the snagger and caught ONE larvae:D

My lights went out at 9:30 and at 11:00 i checked on the eggs and found that a bunch were still on the rock so i thought well maybe tomorrow night.

So last night (sunday) i did the same thing all over again and caught nothing; again at 11:00 i checked and the eggs were still on the rock, checked again last night at 1:30 in the morning and they were still there.

The eggs were laid on 7/17/08; not sure why i caught the one early bird i guess but he is in the larvae tank with a silver belly; and i still have eggs on the rock guess i get to try again tonight.

Yeap .. Been there. LOL I once had to stay up three nights in a row trying to catch larvae. I was so tired !

lol; maybe third time is the charm?
So it's not strange or anything to worry about with this being (tonight) the 11th night since being laid?

I'm tired:D but things went pretty good last night.

I placed a sheet over my tank to help reduce any light from the tv/ps3

Went through the same process from 9:30 to 11:00 last night with the pumps all off, So i go to remove the sheet and see how well my fishing adventure is doing and what do i find?? An empty box:bounce1:

The flashlight battery had died and so there was no light on the snagger, i change the battery and have a look and find that there are little ones all around. So i used the beam of light from the small mag light and lead them towards the snagger this whole process took about 30 min. to complete, but did work very well, I used my food cup to gather up a couple of stragglers (another 15 min.) and finally decided that the pumps had been off long enough and whoever was not in the box by this point was going to have to be on there own.

Placed them all out in the garage last night; and feed them a bunch of rotifers this morning before coming to work. So i hope things go better then the last couple of attempts.

Yeah I thought so. My tank runs on a cool day around 81. Most of the time 81-84 F.
Good luck tonight !

So my cooler tank temp is what causes a longer hatching time?
the current ones hatched 11 days after being laid.

Congrats ! See the snagger thing does work. I use a cheap moon light so I don't have to worry about batteries. How many did you catch last night ?
