My Breeding attempt - Perculas:

Update been a real crazy week but i have a nice size batch on the run; now 6 days old & eating oto a. Of course by posting this they will all probably drop dead before i get home today.

Ok looking for suggestions; what's the best way to try and clear up a larvae tank with cloudy water? Because 2 90% wc & adding a sponge filter have done nothing so far.

Not really sure it just started on Saturday & continued into Sunday; and by lunchtime today it had wiped out all the 9 day old ones that i had; I did wc on both days and it did not help at all; On sunday i added the seasoned sponge to the tank and still nothing; had no losses during the weekend and they were swimming & eating this morning; by lunchtime today though they were all gone.

I have a tile that needs to be pulled tonight; that is if i can get home and get them out before she double clutches them; going to give it a few more tries but i am almost done i think; to much time & energy at this point with no good results in a while.

Cloudy water is bacteria. Its really hard to get under control. I've also had good results with Melafix. cut down feeding as much as you can to reduce bioload. Also in the past taken all the fish (with a net) and put them in a new clean tank. If they are really young this is not an option obviously.

Well since they all croaked they took care of the bio load for me:furious:

I have some Melafix around i think that's the stuff that smells like pine-sol though, I had thought about moving them into another tank as well but being only 9 days old i was not sure if they would survive or just go into shock and croak anyways; guess it did not really matter.

I had another poor hatch yesterday; many of them still on the tile, this time i even tried using a small pump and water current instead of bubbles; it did not work out how i had hoped.

Last night she lays down one of the biggest clutches i have seen from her in a loooong time; just when i was trying to decide if i was done doing all of this, she goes and does something like that to pull me back in::hmm5:

Sure does when it comes to this stuff lately. Oh well feel like punishing myself some more over the weekend and will be grabbing a tile out of the dt today.

:hammer:you have a twisted definition of fun:D

I had a pretty good hatch out over the weekend so now 2 new batches on the run; 1 batch @ 11 days now eating oto a; and the new ones are swimming in green soup & rot's. All i did different on this last batch is i blasted them with bubbles; Had some dead ones the next morning but did not have anything left over on the tile for a change; well i did but the 8 bright orange ones don't count as they were just a little early as usual:lolspin:

Well let's see been a crazy month lost a couple of batches after a wc, but do have a couple on the run as well, just had a partial hatch last night starting to run out of tanks all over again guess it's a good thing, lol. Still trying to decide what the best way to go about setting up a system would be, I am thinking of using my (4) 5g tanks for larvae and connecting (3) 10 or 15 gallon tanks to a system with a sump choices, choices....

What a crazy week spent some time in las vegas for my wife's birthday; and Murphy showed up with some ideas of his own; in the form of random power outages for 2 days; luckily my team of fish sitters did real well and i only lost one 5g tank of larvae for the whole time i was gone; With 11 tanks now on the go i can chalk this one up as a win.

Yeah i got real lucky with the power outages especially since i have a oceanrunner return pump on my dt that does not usually like to re-start; must have had some luck with me the whole time as i did ok in vegas, my wife did even better so it was a good trip for sure.

Had a nice sized hatch on Saturday as well.

This is a great thread! After losing my first clown I decided not to get anymore fish for a while, but after reading this I got to really missing him, so I went a bought a pair! Unfortunately the male was kinda small and he dissapeared the first night. How hard is it to pair up a new male with my female? Have you had to do this ever?

Thanks meredith for the comment; you did not mention what type of clowns you are trying to pair up but yes i have done it before and it is usually best if you introduce a smaller male into the tank; unless you are talking about gold striped maroon's where there is extra steps of precaution that need to be given to the new comer as the female gsm can be be very un-accepting of a new mate.

I use an airline drip that I can control to do my water changes. Do you do something similar? If not, this works really well.

dazed: I'm just doing false percs..... My poor male was really small and couldn't survive the damsels that I can't catch for the life of me (or my fish)! But the bright side is that I have a chance to find a prettier male. My female isn't that big either though. Do you think that she will beat up a new male? should I introduce more than one to spread out the pain, so to speak?

One more question for you (if you dont mind).... My female has been hanging out above my LARGE bubble coral since I introduced her and all of a sudden I'm seeing white abbrasions on her sides. Is this her being stung by the coral? or is it her being harrased by the damsels? I haven't seen any more agression by them (and I watch intently) but it's possible. If you think it could be the coral, will she eventually get "acclimated" to the sting or should I remove the coral so she can't try and host it?

Thanks so much for the help... my newby questions all seem so silly to me.

Yes i do the same thing; i just have been struggling with bacteria blooms lately, they seem to explode overnight and wipe out the tank/larvae.

Dazed, I have had issue of bacterial blooms as well. For me once I started rotating tanks, it seems to have subsided. What I do is when I add a tank of larve to my growout, I clean that tank and move the last set into it. I clean the tank from the last set and set it up for the newly hatched egg's.... Seems to have worked well.

I only have 1 tank of fry to go about ready to go onto my growout system. Recently I have lost the last set to a heater explosion and will miss this next set due to Thanksgiving....
