My Breeding attempt - Perculas:

How long did you use the treatment for? and this has to be done in a separate tank from the dt right? don't think my corals or inverts would appreciate the high salinity.

Actually- I did it in my DT, as once I put fish in there.... it is hard to get them out, lol!

I got an empty gallon container, I scooped in 1 cup of salt and added water, shook the hell out of it to dissolve it, and - (I turkey baste alot with my tanks, haha) turkey basted the mixture right into my overflow... having it run through my system...into my sock, into my refugium, over my foam block and back into the tank- I did it this way #1 (because I always add everything in my overflow) to make sure any grains that didn't dissolve would get stopped by the sock or foam block... and not land on a fish or coral...and #2 so that I could slowly pour it in, watching the effects as I did so.

I am VERY patient and this did take some time to slowly add it with a turkey baster...lol - but for those that are more mechaical- I am sure you could hook up a slow drip system and have it do the work for you, lol - but like I said I like to add it by hand, to make sure everyone in the tank(s) is ok - there were no signs of stress, no corals closing up, I did this every night, for a week, adding a bit more water each time, I maintained the hyper for a few weeks - then slowly brought it back down by topping off with fresh water to bring my #'s back in check.

Your babies are looking great!!

Chelle; thanks for the information, what type of corals were in your dt when you did this treatment? i currently have a mix of sps, chalice, and some zoo's. I just don't want to harm/shock any of the corals if i decide to give this treatment a go.

Hello im new.

Just got reading this thread and out of interest im curious ( and i guess this is directed at dazed); have you got a consistent buyer for all these clowns your churning out every few weeks? :P are lfs's happy for people to walk in and say they have healthy young fishes they can sell to them at a good price on a regular basis. Just interested as would be something id love to do one day- must be a nice bit on the side if you do is what i was thinking

Cheers
Nick

Hey Nick; so far i have not had a problem moving off my fish to let's just say a different place; besides i just eat the ones i can figure out what to do with, lol.....Ok well not really but to answer your question yes my lfs has no problem at all with offering captive raised fish; for me it's a small way to give back to the hobby that i just love so much; if your thinking this is a money making scheme you got it all wrong though; perc's have a growout time of around 6 months before they are ready to move on, so let's just say i don't do this for the money, i do this because i can :)

Question? I am getting my tanks ready for my next fry. I already have a set up of four 10 gallon tanks and a tank at the bottom with live rock and a pump. I have one clownfish fry already in one and I am waiting for the next one this weekend. Now, I was cleaning out the tank today and I noticed that not only do I have rotifers growing in there but I have copepods? Are they ok to be in there once the fry hatch. I read that the copepods will eat the fry. :(

Update; well my pair of black & white occ. finally got around to laying a 3rd clutch of eggs that they did not consume, and the male did a good job this time of tending to the nest; so i pulled the tile on the 7th night as i was sure they were ready, but i guess i was wrong because there was no hatch that night, so i kept a close eye on the clutch & after more than 24 hours of bubbling away, i have my first larvae to try and raise from this pair. Super excited!!

raised on rot's & tdo, if you don't know what the tdo is by now google is your friend

Will all/most develop the B&W or just a few with those genes?
should be 100% in time, these are not heavily in-bred where the gene only pops up in some of the larvae, ie, snowflakes, picasso, etc etc.

6 of them are already developing dark black fins

I think reef nutrition has Top-Dressed Otohime. To the OP did you go from roti's straight to TDO?

yes and have done so for over 2 years now, well let me clarify a bit, i start offering (before it was oto) & now it's the tdo, but i start offering the dry food around day 4 or 5 depending on how strong the batch is, i only do this for the morning feeding though, when the lights first come on for the day, i have found that at that time, their stomachs are stronger than their brains, and they are more willing to try out something new, you don't ever just stop one type of feed and start a new one, they need time to transition from one to the other, so you need to provide an overlap of the food in between.

wow! I have gone from the beginning and read this entire thread!! Everything looks awesome especially in your new setup.

I am at a standstill in creating my stand for tanks that I plan to purchase. How did you create your wood frame?
