My Breeding attempt - Perculas:

Thanks & good luck be sure to read through rkelman's thread as well.

When my percula pair started spawning at the end of September I read both of your threads from beginning to end in one night. I'd like to thank you both for the great information, and encourage anyone else starting to breed to read these threads also.

WOW!! I can't believe it's been a while since i posted anything here lol.....Ok so updates let's see all is going pretty well (at least with the breeding/growout system) My main dt that's a whole different story; more on that in a minute; As for the growout system it's been working great i did have a small issue occur after the first couple of days with the power supply for the led's going bad, but a quick call to Ecoxtic & a replacement was sent out and they have been working just fine since then.

For the growout i have now placed tiles in with the B&W no eggs yet but they have started to clean & show positive signs so I'm still waiting on them.

I have a group of 4 perc's who are doing the same as the b/w's no eggs yet but maybe some time soon.

My GSM pair has still done nothing although the female continues to be a well you know she is a gsm.

So my issue now is this my dt is a acrylic tank and unfortunately i made a huge mistake & dropped a new led fixture on the top of the tank & it cracked the top of the tank, so the tank is going to have to be replaced. Today i got a call & an offer on my gsm pair which i think I'm going to go ahead & sell & use the money towards a new tank, i have been trying to decide if i wanted to move my breeding pair out of the dt for a while now and since the tank will be coming down at some point i figure now is my best option, since they will be interrupted anyway due to changing the tank over anyway. I plan to move them with a clutch of eggs & will just have to hope that they don't take to long of a break in-between.

Ok well on Saturday i did what i had to do, the gsm pair has now been sold, & the breeding pair of perc's where moved over into the broodstock tank in their place, I did move the pair with the eggs on a tile as well as one of their anemone's as i had a split in my dt, By Sunday afternoon they had eaten the whole clutch of eggs which were due to hatch the next night, so i guess i really made them mad.

Going to have to wait & see if they start up again after they get settled into their new home.

I did pick up a new 120g which will be replacing my current dt, so I now have the task of building a new stand/canopy and of course switching the tanks over at some point in time.

Ok well here's an update; after 3 weeks in their new home my breeding pair laid a very small clutch of eggs (around 20 to 30) that i did not disturb at all, that was about 10 days ago; last night i go in to feed them & was happily surprised to see them back to doing their thing,:bounce1: of course she did shove the tile out of the way and the eggs are on a large piece of rock along with the anemone so i may just be letting this batch go as well for now. Some pictures though to share:

Congrats Dazed ! Nice to see your still at it. Your breeding system looks great also. Do you use individual heaters, or just use a room heater ?

Hey Andy; Yeah I'm still at it just don't post much because it would be kind of boring; something like this; they laid eggs, i hatched the eggs, the larvae were moved to growout & repeat lol..
For heaters i have them in the sump for each section broodstock & growout; 2 heaters in each one so far i have been able to maintain 80deg. for them; although tonight & tomorrow morning will be the biggest test yet for the system as we are expecting some real cold weather here on the coast, they are saying the snow level could dip below 1000 ft.

I have been very happy with the grow out system it has made some tasks much easier.

I have just been busy trying to get my new 120 up & running as i need to replace my current dt.

Hey Dazed,
What temp do you keep your fry from 0 to 7 days?

If anyone else breeds, please chime in. I'm thinking about lowering all temps but the broodstock. Currently we're at 81-82.

That's right where mine are at 80-82

Doesn't lowering them slow the meta stage?
I think that was where one of my issues were in the beginning, I had the tank set at a constant 78 degrees....from what I read and received from fellow breeders, this was WAY TOO LOW......

Why lower the temp? (curious if there is a reason I am not aware, and may want to go back and try)

:)

yeah i think it slows the meta stage, temp can also affect hatching times, just a one degree change can add or take away a day from the hatching process, imo 78 is to cold i keep my broodstock at 80 or above & i keep the little ones a bit warmer than that.

Dazed, hey been a while, I know your prob very busy but could you post an updated pic of your breeding/growout setup. This is assuming it has changed/matured! I am looking to start breeding and want to gleen off your success.

Sorry for such a delayed response; but yeah i have been pretty busy lately LOL.... As for the growout/broodstock nothing has really changed & as soon as something matures it is usually passed along to various other places, one thing that i need to work on with the summer weather approaching though is an ato system for both, it is on my list of things to do, i just have been busy tinkering around with my new 120 dt.

Do you have any pics to share of your babies/grow out?

Well the last couple of batches have gone real well, so i have a bunch of new little ones on the run. About 2 weeks ago my pair of black & white's occ. laid down their first nest of eggs, unfortunately they ate the nest 4 days later and have not laid anymore eggs yet, but I'm hopeful that maybe some time soon.

The 120 dt is having an ich issue right now which is driving me crazy, that and having to be patient and wait for the system to mature some before going forward, but just like everything in this hobby if it's not something than it's something else lol.

Have you given a try at raising anymore fry yourself?

Yes, actually :) I have also acquired a baby Picasso pair, a juvenile ORA Occy pair, and just got 6 babies from a fellow reefer :) So I am focusing more on the occy and picasso to begin breeding within the next few months...I am thinking the picassos "may" be ready by Christmas time to start figuring out "how to do the do" lol :)
The ORA occy's will have awhile to go..maybe past Christmas... :)

I have been getting my rotifer culture technique down pat... they seem to do really well in the garage.. (temperature) ... and I am feeling more confident on reproducing the rots for my future batches.

Of the "hard to raise" percularis... I am moving this pair back to the main tank, I have gained the practice / experience with them... but looking forward to an easier to breed/raise pair :)

I have been looking for a small Black & White pair as well.. to add to my collection...

As far as the ich issue.... what have you done thus far to battle it? What fish are in the DT that are affected?

wow; sounds like you have a very nice setup going towards the broodstock; when you say that your rot's do better in the garage do you mean colder temps then? I have my cultures out in the garage as well. As far as the ich i added a small pacific blue that broke out, so i removed him & placed into qt for 5 weeks of hypo treatment, during that time he bounced back & forth with showing an outbreak even at 1.006 for a whole week, right now it's just him & my filamented wrasse, the 3 chromis seem fine, everyone is eating like pigs, it's defiantly not an issue i wanted to deal with, but it's there now lol
