My Breeding attempt - Perculas:

Well dazed youll have to start another thread and split it, then we'll all campaign harder for a win!

I was considering a clown pair for my 180, and I LOVE maroon; but am worried about aggression towards other fish. I also was thinking something in the Clarkii complex. I will keep a pair of true percs in my nano upstairs as sort of a Nem/clown tank, but would like something different in the 180. At work we recently had a pair of clarkiis spawn in their holding tank! So I KNOW they are already a "mated" pair, and am kinda considering snatches this pair up so I may try and follow in your footsteps :). Does anyone know are they a significantly more difficult to raise the fry, easier, or similar atleast?

:lol: I think i will take these 9 pages and run with it.

If you really like the maroons get the maroons it's a 180 so you should have enough room for them to find a niche to defend, on the clarkiis i would have to guess and say they are similar in terms of care, decent water quality, rot's etc. etc. Not much help i know...

update well let's see my oldest graduated from kindergarten today:celeb1::bounce2: :bounce2: :celeb1:

ok back on topic bad news again What's that you say well for some unknown reason to me i lost another 20 or so fish between last night & today they are out of that batch i mentioned before that seemed to not be growing in size, this time around no cloudy water so i don't think a bacteria bloom is to be blamed this time around. I have not added any bbs to the tank so that's not it, they have been eating oto a which should be fine, there is a seasoned sponge filter in there and it's been cranked up for a while so there should be enough oxygen?

I have not run any tests on the water yet i have been a bit busy over the last couple of days, anyone want to take a guess as to what's going on. I can't afford the time, effort, & energy to keep losing them like this.
 
Heat? Why don't you set up one holding tank in the house and see if they live in a more stable environment. If they do, we can all blame your wife for the previous losses. :lol:

I would have to agree with Melev in part at least. How about temperature swing as well as heat?
 
Congrats on the graduation!

Sorry for the recent loss though. Are you still rearing the fry in your garage? I guess it's still pretty mild here in the midwest, but I am sure its prob. pretty warm out their in California. Are you using an A/C unit in your garage?

Well appearently the clarkiis arent for sale now. So we'll see. I really want maroons, but many people warn me about their aggression. I need to find out if they're really that bad.

Yeah um that's just not going to happen. I do have heaters in all of the tanks & the temp is not swinging around very much at all. maybe 2 deg. or so. I try and keep the tanks around 80 deg.

I am guessing that maybe something was just not right with those 2 batches as they were slow to enter meta, and even after that they were very slow to grow, the tank right next to them is just starting to enter meta. & a few of them are already bigger then the ones i lost. The temp is not swinging around crazy i have 75w heaters in those 5g tanks.

Thanks; i sometimes wonder where the time goes..

Yep all out in the garage it's going to have to happen out there or not at all. No a/c unit & no heat, I live on the coast of cali and for the most part we have a very nice & mild ocean climate. I can hop in my car & have my feet in the pacific in less than 10 minutes from my door. The forecast for my area we are not expected to even break 70 deg. for the next week.

On the maroons i really think you will be fine, I have mine in a 40g breeder with a bta & they don't move very far from it at all. I even have a small green clown goby in there with them and they don't seem to care at all.

Good news Bad news (who would have guessed that)

Good: 100% hatch Sat. night.
Bad 99% dead Sun. morning

Not exactly sure what happened as there are a couple of things to mention:
1: I did use the same tank that i cleaned with bleach after the last group went south but i did rinse and rinse the tank with water. Tank was air dried outside for 4 days before use, and i also used prime in there as well.

2: I did try a different airstone to see what would happen it was a lee's wooden one can be used in skimmers etc. it produced a nice fine bubble mist & the eggs were not getting bashed around on the tile, it worked well as all of the eggs did hatch but i can not see how it would have not added oxygen to the water so there should not have been a oxygen depletion issue.

3: I had not added any rot's to the water yet so there is no chance that they fouled the water at all.

4: I did add some stability to the tank to try & see if it would help at all; i don't think it did and may have been the cause of the crash. (my best guess)

oh well; she laid down a nice new big batch of volunteers on Sunday night.
 
I don't know what Stability is but it sounds like everything else was good... Try again with the next batch minus the Stability and see how it goes.

I agree, my how this "hobby"(i use the term loosely) loves to keep you guessing. It's good to hear you seem to be getting better hatches. I think you deserve it to be as simple as not using th stability next time, and have a perfect hatch all the way through grow out :). I'll cross my fingers for ya agian!
