If the corals touch each other, RTN can move from colony to colony. Brown Jelly Disease can hurt other corals and should always be siphoned out.
Thanks for that info Marc! Ya I did definetly get any sorta jellyish stuff out asap, and have done a 50% and another LARGE waterchange.

Ok back from vacation quick summary Seaworld was absolutely fantastic the San Diego zoo not so much

Almost made it through the whole trip without any issues unfortunately Murphy had to step in at some point and for some reason unknown i lost about 14 fish in the 10g growout tank; My fishsitter (mother in law) called me in tears with the news, not sure what happened at all, i did do a 90% wc when i got home and have not lost anymore from that tank. I just feel bad because she did everything while i was gone; fed the dt, dosed the vodka to the dt, fed rot's etc. etc. oh well win some lose some as usual.

Bummer. When I switched to my current tank I lost all my sps. Water params were normal but they all one by one perished.

My sps do that now and i have not even switched tanks!!
:eek1:

Thats too bad.. It seems like it would have happened if you were there anyways. Just currious but how large are the clowns in your growout tank? and approximately how old?

Sad to hear dazed, but it's nice to know you have a pretty compitent reef-sitter! Bad timing for your random(let's hope) loss of fish, but I hope she knows it wasn't "her" fault. I too am curious to know about the size/age of clowns that parished.

That's exactly what i explained to her if they were swimming the night before when you fed them & dead when you went to turn on the light the next morning it would not matter who opened the door the result would have been the same.

The ones in the 10g growout tank range in size from the runts being 3/4" long and the larger ones are well over 1" some even have their 3rd stripe already; they are around 6 months old.

Yes but she was so worried about all the tanks to begin with i just wish nothing had gone wrong, almost made it because she called me to let me know just as i had finished packing up the car to start the drive home.

(size & age are posted above) it's just strange because of all the tanks i did not think that one would have any issue. It has 2 well seasoned sponge filters in it as well as a aqua clear 20 hob that has carbon etc. There are still around 60 fish in that tank though.

Just moved another batch over to a 5g tank and started them on oto B2 this morning they seem to be doing well.

It sure does and you must be referring to my latest catastrophe; Sunday night i go out to feed the tanks and find that one of the 5g tanks which has 50 or so 2 month old fish in it are all on the bottom of the tank and really struggling to breathe; check the ammonia and it's fine; so i check the nitrite and find it's off the chart!! So i remove the sponge filter that's in there & replace it with one from the 10g growout tank and do a large wc, finish up at around midnight and shut off the lights with the complete understanding that all of them are probably going to be gone by morning.

Monday morning much to my surprise only 1 dead on the bottom and the rest are back to swimming and acting normal check nitrite in the tank and it reads safe thought i had dodged another bullet; ahhh not so fast turn the light on that tank this morning and they are all gone.

To add insult to injury 2 of my small sps colonies in my dt go poof overnight as well.

This is becoming a bit more than frustrating to say the least; I have a tile that needs to be pulled on wed. for a hatch but right now i just do not have the motivation.

I do have around 70 fish that are at sellable size and right now i can't decide what to do; I may just be done.

Hang in there Chris! While the hardships seem to keep on coming, you've built an impressive list on what not to do(that wasnt supposed to be an insult or joke). I'm confident that your process will continue to improve and your mortality rate will get lower and lower! We're all here with/for you buddy.

Man you do have some bad luck. jmadison is right. As long as you are learning on the way you are moving closer to figuring it all out at least.

I know I sound like broken record (anyone remember what those are? ;) ), but if the fry tanks were inside instead of the garage, they may avoid these problems because you see them constantly instead of only when you go out to check on them?

true but not exactly the list of accomplishments i would like to own up to:lol:

the batch i mentioned about pulling on wed. either hatched a day early or was eaten because on wed. morning they were already gone. so it will be a bit before i have more eggs anyway's maybe by then i will have made up my mind.

It does seem lately that if it wasn't bad luck i would not have any luck at all.

It's just really frustrating as you already know how much time & energy & money are spent to get them to where they were just to have the whole tank nuke out; there were 3 batches combined in that tank.

Have you ever had a sponge filter fail? I just don't get how after 2 months all was fine and then crashed.

What in the world is this record thing you speak of?:D

I know that the setup is not ideal in location but sometimes you just have to work with what you have. I mentioned to my wife the other day that i was done and i thought she would jump for joy but no she thinks i should just keep on going, lol.

I have a 10g tank with 6 month old fry in it and a bunch of them already have a 3rd stripe, i have a 5g tank with my 7 first survivors that are approaching the one year mark; the GSM pair in the 40g seem fine so it makes me think it's possible to raise them out there.

I turn some of the lights on in the am & feed before going to work; i turn the rest of them on & feed at lunchtime everyday i am lucky that my office is only 5 minutes from my house so i go home every day for lunch; i check & feed when getting home from work; and usually i am in & out of the garage several times a day until going to bed to start all over again.
