My Breeding attempt - Perculas:

I get 3 weeks vacation that is all.

I like to go somewhere warm in March.

A week with the parents/inlaws in Summer.

A week with the parents/inlaws @ Christmas.

The last two week are no Vacations. :D

YOU GUYS ARE HILARIOUS!

FB

Well lets see; it's not March and it's not Christmas time; so maybe it's not really a vacation week, lol.

Welcome back FB! Nice to see you again! LOL :)
On a different note, can someone PLEASE tell me what a normal mortality rate I should expect from a hatch? It seems every time I feed the larvae, they die! I just don't get it! Out of hundreds of eggs, I'm down to just over a dozen again after two days. I'm sure someone already covered this topic in here but my eyes wouldn't be able to handle that much reading! :)

I would suggest looking at what you are feeding the parents as they are the first direct link to the newborns.
The diet of the parents directly affects the larvae.

I feed them a combination of things: Ottohime, New Life Spectrum pellets, Ocean Nutrician pellets, frozen brine shrimp, and other frozen marine formulas.

"It seems every time I feed the larvae, they die!"

Shesh what are you feeding them? :)

Seriously though.. What ARE you feeding them? What's your process?

I'm feeding them live S-Rot's. I enrich the Rots with Rotifer Diet, then strain, rinse, dump. My density of Rots is about 1 per length of larvae. Please don't ask me to get scientific with Mg/Ml times the square root of a hypotenuse triagle cubed to the 5th power! LOL :)

Lol. That's good enough I guess :) Very strange. I agree it may be poor larvae quality to start with possibly due to broodstock diet or maybe they need more time to produce more viable eggs.

As far as egg quality goes, I will add that all the eggs were scraped and siphoned off the glass of the aquarium because I haven't moved the parents into their own tank yet for breeding (no room). We will be moving into a new house in November and I can assure you that I WILL have a full blown breeding setup going! I still have 7 kids from two hatches many months ago so I'll be splitting them up into pairs in hopes that I'll get breeders. I just have to hope that the move doesn't mess up my current pair and they never breed again.

Maybe FB can share some of his "Magic Water" and everything will be fine! LOL :)

:furious: I just don't get it! Fed them rots and just put in 2 drops of rotifer diet to help keep rots enriched and now, several hours later, 3 more casualties! Where's that "magic water"??? :furious:

Does anyone have a training video on this? Or can someone come visit and help??? :(

 Finally, my ding dong clowns are laying a new batch of eggs on a rock I can actually remove from the tank! Hopefully I can have a very good hatch this time!

As far as water parameters goes, I'm working on a new set of tests now. So far I know it tastes salty with a slight undertone of calcium and magnesium! :lmao:

Ok so here i go again; lol; My latest batch of eggs should have hatched on Sunday night but since my reef temps have been a little warmer than normal i had thought that they were going to hatch on Saturday night instead, the eggs where all silver tipped and the male was very active with the nest. So i pulled them a day early and i was wrong; no hatch on sunday morning (although i still think if i had left them in the reef they would have hatched). I have not had very good luck at all with trying to bubble the eggs for any longer than one night, usually having the eggs turn white on the tile and die.

So Sunday i go down to my lfs & pick up some Methylene Blue first time i have used the product but it is suppose to help keep fungus away from eggs, etc.

Directions say for eggs use; 1 teaspoon for 10g. Easy enough i have a 5g tank with less than 5g of water so i eyeballed the dose (less than 1/2 teaspoon was used) and was a bit shocked once the product was added. The water is really blue, I checked this morning and most of the eggs seemed to of hatched, which is a plus because it's better than the results i have had before but i have no idea if rot's can live in this or not? I did add some rot's this morning just to see what happens it appeared that some of the larvae were striking at them, the same way they would if in green water.

Looking for suggestions as what to do??

Here are some pictures after all my rambling.

Congrats Chris, so far seems so good! That water is REALLY blue. Maybe if you just barely ***** all the clowns a few times with acupuncture needle to let the dye in, you could be the first breeder of blue clowns LOL. No on second thought dont do that.

You should have known. I was the only one with "Magic Water". Even then it didn't work all the time!

Well it appears that this batch may be a complete disater as best i could tell the rot's i added this morning are all dead on the bottom of the tank, i added a bag of carbon to the tank at lunch and removed some water but did not have time to replace any as i had to be back at work;

I guess the only thing to do is a almost 100% wc when i get home today, if i can't keep rot's in there alive then the larvae stand no chance of survival at this point; i did add some oto a if for nothing else than just piece of mind that i tried feeding them something.

jmadison; that's the same thing my wife said blue clowns would be really cool.:D

Yeah so i have "magic blue water" and it's not working very well at all.

man dazed I better just keep my mouth shut... Didnt you say that while they were alive anyways, they were going for the rots?

What do you need to be quiet about?

Yes this am when i added the rot's they seemed to be going after them; but when i checked on the tank at lunch 5 hours later the bottom of the tank is covered in a dusting that i am guessing is the dead rot's, the water is so blue it's crazy. There are still larvae swimming around in the tank the issue for me right now is if the rot's won't stay alive in the tank due to the Methylene Blue then i can't feed them enough and they will certainly perish.

i plan to do a large wc when i get home tonight of course that's assuming the larvae are still alive.
