My coral banded shrimp lost his big claw!

One of his two big legs/ claws (the boxing ones) is gone!

I haven't seen him aggressive towards anything or anything agressive towards him.

Why would he suddenly lose it?

Is he slowly dying?

I've had him about a year now.

How long do these creatures live for?

They occasionally lose them, they will grow them back so no need to worry.

He just seems less active - almost like he's hurting or something. Usually he's everywhere trying to get food. He seems to be just hanging under a rock mostly, and he already just molted, so it's not that.

He's not hurting, just feels a little less equipped in case of intruders....they tend to retreat after losing a claw. He should be fine.

sometimes they will lost them to avoid a predator Ive read, kind of like lizards do with their tales

well my shrimp did that and after he molted the claws grew back over night.

how long does it usually take for them to grow back...i just got mine and havne't seen him yet, hides all the time...

it happens all the time and always regrows. I have several in my rig. After 1-2 molts it will be back. add some lugols if you want to encourage them to molt quicker.

Ours lost a claw the first night in our tank. A week later I noticed it had grown back but was smaller/thinner. Now, a month later, it's hard to tell which one it was.

i bought some kent essential elements, im guessing that should help keep my iodine levels up..
