My DIY Rock/Foam Reef

Thanks Kannin. I hope to start the epoxy process tonight. When I receive my second shipment of Marco and can finish the other side which should be alot simplier not having to work around the over flow box. I am very impressed with the shapes of the Marco rock, full of holes.

foam

foam

This is my first post here on reef central. I don't even have a saltwater tank yet, but, I am planning on starting one soon. I keep dart frogs and many dart frog keepers, I included, have used spray foam to make backgrounds for our frog vivariums. I'll try to get some pics up sometime soon. On the last tank I did, I used a "black"(it actually cures gray)spray foam that is made for securing and sealing around rocks in outdoor ponds. I have used egg crate on prior tanks but on the last one I made, I did it a bit different. I laid the tank on it's back and laid out any rocks, or anything else that I wanted in the background on the back glass and tried to picture how I wanted it too look. After getting things in place, I I then spread silicone on the back glass(the foam alone will not stick very well) putting a little extra in places that would have rocks and such to help secure them. After smearing the silicone, I placed the rocks and such against the back glass into the silicone. After placing the rocks, I then sprayed the foam around them covering the back of the tank and making it thicker in some spots to make "rock ledges" and other features in the background. After that I let the foam cure over night. After the foam cures In my case, with frogs, I want the background to look like a dirty rock wall, I spread brown silicone over the foam and then cover the silicone with my substrate mix of cocoa fiber and peat moss. I was thinking maybe use some white silicone and crushed coral in a reef tank??

Kannin (and anyone else who might know):

I am LOVING this thread...I have gotten real sick of the stack o rock look over the years and have the opportunity to change my tank soon. I had a friend build me a new stand...which means I have to empty the tank and then I can rebuild. The only problem I see is, the rock I'd be ziptieing to the eggcrate would be LIVE rock...established rock at that. With critters and all that in/on it. Would this be a problem? Is there any way to let it cure IN water? With fish and corals and things sitting in a 150 gallon rubbermaid while I switch stands, I don't think I'd have the amount of time needed to cure and wait weeks to skim off epoxy effects etc etc. Or do I?

Any ideas people?

Before I found this thread I was going to attempt some sort of pvc structure to hold my rock work, but I like the diversity the foam gives me. Also, I read somewhere else that someone contacted the company of the foam and they say that it will break down over time leaking chemicals into the tank. Is this true and is anyone worried about this?

Lastly, can anyone give me (a NON DIY'er) an itemized list of what I need and a step by step manual? And what are the brand names of the stuff I need and where do I buy em?

Thanks a TON in advance!! This site is going to make a DIY'er out of me yet!!

Great idea and your tank ended up looking amazing. I dont know about trying to do a wet cure atlanticblue. It may be intert when dry but it could leach all kinds of solvents when fresh which would probably kill all the life on the live rock.

it looks good. Did you figure out a way to secure it. I bet you could just lay a big thick bead of aquarium silicone on the exposed egg crate in the front.

The pods, worms and other bugs that make our rock live. Dig in the rocks. Will not they do this with the foam and expose the foam to the water? Or is it considered safe still?

Thanks Kannin. For those interest, I used Everman's Fiberglass Resin sold at your local West Marine. It does have a strong smell which should be gone in a couple of days. Kannin, I made the 3/4" too short for the euro brace but will take 1" pvc and notch it to raise the wall and then zip tie it down. Instead of the eggcrate across the floor. I will use 2 maybe 3 1" pvc pipe running end to end. This will allow me to insert T's to add vertical pipe to build rock towers.
Thanks for the advice on the phosphate reactor. Mark at Marco Rocks recommend Turbo Start 900 to seed the rock with bacteria that is needed for the cycling process. My LRS uses on every new setup. I will post my results.
Thanks again and GREAT THREAD!

Here is a pic just sanded.

Here is a pic of pvc piping that will fit into the 1" cap in the middle of the wall. This will form a large arch.

Epoxies for potable water

Epoxies for potable water

Does Anyone know what kind of epoxy finishing resin to use when doing the Spray foam rock work? Will the stuff you buy for Fiber glass work(without using the fiberglass pads of course)? Cause the Fiber glass Epoxy resin with hardener is about all i can find where im from.

I have to say Kannin you impressed, motivated and inspired me. I will be undertaking a Reefscaping project myself in the next few weeks.

I want to talk about epoxies just a bit. I'm no expert but... What I am going to do and what I would recommend to anyone taking on a project of this nature is NOT to use Bondo or any other product that is not safe for and used in potable water applications. My local plumbing supply company has an epoxy product that is used in drinking water applications. I have to go over to pick it up and as soon as I get it I'll come back and post the name for everyone. They are currently out of stock but are expecting it to come in any day. I figure if it safe for drinking water it will be fine for this application too.

My concern of course is leaching. Someone I have great respect for with regards to the hobby and someone with a great deal more experience than I have told me he has heard of people having leaching issues. He said it took a year or two for the problem to surface but that there certainly is a possibility. Whether or not anyone took actual water samples in for testing to verify that contaminants did exist... I doubt it but I know I'd rather error on the side of caution.

A product I know is safe is a vinylester coating. I know this won't create a problem because it was used in a salt water application at the old Living Seas Exhibit at Epcot, now it’s called Nemo. The management there investigated all their options and determined this was the best coating to use. I feel pretty secure in their selection being safe.

Again, I'll post what the plumbing supply people have when I get it.

Fishingpcols...nice application, I like very much.

Kannin;

Have you noticed any ill effects to date using the 2 part epoxy you used in your build thread for the rock wall? I was planning on using the same stuff and reading the latest update has me thinking twice about what epoxy to use. As you can see below, my custom 65gal build is at the point where all I need to do is apply the expoy and sand/crushed coral mixture.

I just applied it last night (4/30) so not really much of a chance to full examine. Did you silcone the back of your eggrate to the glass. I would think you would want to run your eggrate to the front to keep the bottom from flipping up in case your adhesive fails. Just a thought.

GIJOE007...

I haven't had any problems as of yet. Tiggsy is nearly a year in with no issues either. Your tank looks good, by the way.

You can pick up the red cans of Great Stuff at Home Depot for about $7.00 or $8.00 a can. Same exact stuff, same company, brand everything.

Fiberglass Resin

Fiberglass Resin

Quick poll. Has anyone used a polyster fiberglass resin instead of the epoxy's mentioned. If so please list your thoughts. I know you get a strong smell and it will last for days. Other than that any problems? I have start with Evercoat's Fiberglass Resin only because it is in my garage from making boat repairs.
Thanks to all that respond.

there is also the pond foam a little harder to find but works great ive used it in my tank for over a year now no problems spagetie worms love it and it is also black i will have to post picks of my wall if i can find some.
