My first sump!

MyMonkey

Persona Non Grata
Well, I finally did it. I am now using a sump. It is just a 10 gallon tank with external overflow and a Mag 5 as a return. I am getting some micro bubbles. I will eventually build a refugium into a 20 gallon long tank and replace the 10 gallon.

I got rid of the emperor as suggested in order to make room for the overflow.

Here is a pic of the overflow. Chris4693 built it. Nice work eh?

Here is a shot of the sump. Ok for my first plumbing job I suppose.

I had to cutomize the stand a bit. It had two supports along the front. One was cosmetic only though. Removed it. Now I have three doors there. I have been wanting to do this for a long time now.

The only problem is the noise. The overflow has no durso or silencer thing as I have seen before. I placed a sponge over the down tube but it still sounds like Niagra. :D

Heartland Custom Aquatics Overflows are available in Oklahoma at Aquarium Reasource Technologies (ART) or WetPets, if you need custom builds I can handle those directly. You can find store locations and numbers at www.mycomas.com in the sponser LFS map.

I believe both store sell them for $89, but don't quote me on that.

Chris makes very nice overflows by the way. However, I do need the Stockman standpipe. I looked it up, seems pretty basic. Do you have plans for it? SUch as the parts etc?

Otherwise, I may just order one from you Chris.

Well, I have the Stockman coming soon. Thanks Chris.:) Now, what can I put in the sump? Other than a skimmer that is. I have tried to think of a way to use the Remora in the sump. It just won't work. I am getting a better skimmer soon.

I mean, where do I put carbon and stuff like that now?

Monkey, Not to Hijack or anything, but I have a sump question as I'm getting ready to expand to this type of setup. What exactly is the purpose of a ball valve and is it necessary? Couldn't you just unplug the pump as long as the return line has a siphon break?

Dave

The ball valve is to fine tune the return pumps output. Mine is a Mag 7. I said Mag 5 above, but I think it is a 7. I had to lower the flow a bit. My overflow is rated at 600 GPH. With the pump on full force it was a bit too much. I will eventually place a T fitting and another bal valve to adjust flow to a Fuge.

I have tested the syphon break several times and it was ok. The siphon did not break. And there was only limited water returned from the tank to the sump. I drilled a small hole just above the surface on the return outlet to help that.
