My first time away from the tank, wish me luck.

Bent

I got nothin'
Well, in a few hours I'll be leaving for the beach for 9 days. This is the first time I'll be away from the tank since I set it up. I guess I'm as ready as I'll ever be.

I have an apex JR now, and with it I have a webcam on the tank and the sump downstairs. With that I should be able to log in and see the sump level and the power status as well as check in on the animals. The lights in the basement sump are always on, so if I open it and the lights are off then the power is out. I have the temp probe, with email and text alerts if the water gets too hot or too cold. I have the outlet set up to shut off if the water gets too hot. The heaters are also on a ranco. I have a house sitter and a whole home stand by generator.

I don't know of much else I can do at this point to set myself up for success. I plan to change the water in the am before we leave, and I guess we will see what happens.

Wish me luck!

Good luck brother! Maybe take a few photos and you might see some growth when you get back. Looking at the tank daily makes it hard to see progress sometimes.

Wow , I think your more than ready to go away on a mini vacation , you've covered all your steps

Bent I've done this a few times now and the first time I left I forgot to plug in my ATO before I left because I did a water change the night before. Luckily my cousin had a keen eye and saw something was wrong when my hob skimmer wasn't functioning right after a few days, but now I make a habit of not doing anything for a few days before I leave out of town so I know everything is running right. I would double check everything before you leave and possibly adopt my rule in the future, it's probably the worst time to touch your tank when you're going to be out of town afterwards.

Have fun and good luck to you and your tank!

+1 worst time to tinker or make changes to your tank is the week before leaving.
Sounds like you have your bases covered. Have a great trip!

2+. too late now I think but I would not do water change before leaving.
I often leave portions of food for daily feeding, and not leave the amount to feed to the common sense of the tank sitter.

Have a nice vacation.

I'd leave it. I also committed the 'didn't plug ATO back in' on my first trip. ;)

I'd give your phone number to the house sitter with instructions not to hesitate to phone you for weird noises, a water level not being up, or just something not looking or sounding right. 'I'll sound stupid' should not be a barrier to a report.

Likewise---I hope you've got autofeeders in place, or at least bags with clear instructions as to amount. That's the very worst problem besides things accidentally unplugged because the housekeeper needed the socket for the vacuum....

That said, have a glorious trip! :) ;)

Well it happened today.

I got some email alerts that the temp was below 78. Sure enough the power was out again in the basement.

This time however, the main breaker in the subpanel (the entire basement is on its own sub panel) was tripped and the upstairs AC unit (air handler) fuses were tripped as well. (Which are on the main box).

The house sitter flipped the breakers back on, but I'm worried it's going to happen again tonight when no one is home.

Anyone know why this would have happened? I'm thinking there was suddenly a short in the upstairs unit that threw the subpanel main and the individual ones in the main box.

There were no storms today that I know of over there.

Anyone have any idea why this happened?

Are your breakers maxed out? I have one circuit that blows if I forget and plug my hairdryer into it, it can handle everything else but just barely.

Either way, I would put that in the "deal when you get home" compartment. You have a sitter for emergencies, and an auto-everything for dailies, and a bunch of computers for curiosity. If I were you I'd only bother with stuff I can do something about, and if I can't do anything I don't want to know. You set everything up really well. You have a good shot at most of it being alive when you come home. That's a win. The ranges on controllers tend to be very tight. If it's a temp dip of 5 degrees I wouldn't fuss. If it keeps dropping, maybe call the sitter, but remember that metabolism slows at low temps so it's a far preferable sitch than cooking the tank and your sitter has a good chance of making it worse.

Tl;dr vacation harder, deal with it when you get home :beachbum:

wow...spent so much on the tank thats the only beer you can afford?

You won't find a bigger beer snob than me, I can blind taste and tell you the hop varietal. If you happen to catch me on the beach this is what I'm sipping

Snobbery is the harbor of the pitifully unimaginative.

I bet everything will be okay when you get home, like cStrickland said, better cool than cooking. Buy some proper beer though, dang it! This isn't college anymore.

If in socal I recommend pretty much anything made by lost coast brewery.
