My JBJ 28gal Nano Build Thread

Nice tank. If it were me, I wouldn't accept the nomination. I say that because, if I were to win, I would want it to be the best my tank can possibly be. Just my opinion.

Still a beautiful tank! Such great growth. I wish I could keep my back glass that clean lol.

Thanks!! And keeping the glass that clean is NOT easy, I try to do a quick scrub with the magfloat daily, a full scrub with algae pad twice a week, and a scraping of coralline once a week.

I love this tank. I've read this thread all the way through and I am impressed. You should accept the nomination. I am sure your tank could and will be better but you don't win for what could be.

BTW I am looking at the Aquamaxx. Are you still happy with it? Also could you provide any more detail on the mod to make it fit? I know you described it, but I was a little unclear, did you trim the intake or output or both and did you cut the horizontal or vertical part?

Thanks for the updates, great tank you deserve the nomination IMO.

Thanks Pudge!! I think I am going to wait though, I just don't feel worthy at this point and I would like to have a lot more grown out SPS.

Still very happy with the skimmer and really don't have any complaints. For more details, check out this thread:

Haven't yet met anyone who was completely satisfied with their tank, it's probably part of what draws people to and keeps people in this hobby. (Also an efficient way to get rid of all that annoying excess time and money.):lol2:

Nice work either way.

Thanks again for the info.

Hey ange062! Just wanted to say your tank is a real inspiration! It's turned out beautifully!

I did have I quick question on your skimmer. Are you able to adjust the amount of air the skimmer pulls in (thus adjusting bubble size)? Also, how hard is the skimmer to disassemble for cleaning? And if it's not too much to ask, could you give me a measurement of the distance between the intake tube, and the outlet tube?

Thanks a bunch! And again, your tank is amazing!

Thanks Pudge and RYknow, sometimes this hobby can get quite discouraging so it's good to have some reassurance from time to time :) I know I am pleased by my efforts, but to be able to help others in their journey is also very cool.

RYknow, on the skimmer, the only adjustment is collection cup height, though I have yet to find a reason for anything else. It's super simple to disassemble, it literally takes 20s tops and another 30s to put back together. If you are talking about inlet/outlet where they enter the skimmer body, it's 1.5" horizontally from pipe center, and vertically is 3" from pipe center. For the actual intake screen to outlet pipe the way I have it configured I would guess maybe 7" but I can't measure until the next time I pull it off the tank. Hope that helps.

I am actually starting to feel that my tank is starting to go ULNS on me as my caulerpa isn't growing anymore and my glass algae growth is almost non-existent this week. I am going to have to pick up the feeding again after winning my short cyano battle.

Now for a quick update.

A while back a friend was admiring the tank and made a comment something like this: "Where are all the FISH in your FISH TANK??". My clown was swimming along the surface out of sight, the damsel and firefish were hiding as they do a good bit of the time, and the coral beauty was in and out of the rockwork as normal.

I've been so caught up in an SPS frenzy that I forgot about and partly lost interest in the fish, haha. Well, I decided to step it up a notch and get a few small fish. I had ~9" to safely deal with by the 1.5" per gal standard. I realize this isn't "fully grown" size, but plan to swap them out if they get too large for smaller specimens (or get a larger tank! :)) Not to mention my HOB-1 supplying extreme skimming for the tank.

I found a small gold and black damsel and a tiny royal gramma, and threw them into a QT tank with my swales swissguard basslet that had already been in there for a few weeks. I let the 3 of them ride it out in there for a couple of weeks, then added to the main tank.

Unfortunately, I have only caught a couple short glimpses of the swales coming out of the rock when the lights are off. The royal gramma hides about 90% of the time also. The gold&yellow is very active and pretty though, and it seems to have stirred up the activity of my older fish. I am hoping with time that the basslets will start to be more adventurous.

All the corals are looking good and growth is especially good on the new ORA acros (or maybe it's just easier to notice on the smaller frags). My dosing schedule has proven to keep the tank stable, but the 2x daily is still so much work that a dosing pump is on my short list.

Also, the ORA green birdsnest that RTN'd on me seems to be starting to come back to life. I left it in the tank because there were still a few semi-healthy looking tips, but now I am starting to get some polyp extension across the entire skeleton again. It still looks bleached, but PE is a good sign so hope to see more progression in the coming weeks.

Enough blabbing, I'll post some updated pics later.

very nice of live rock setting. I like set like that with a lot of cave that is water can flow and dont get any algae

Thanks travis, I am pretty happy with the scape as well. If I could do it over the only change I would make would be to epoxy the structure together, I've had to deal with a few rockslides over the months.

Here's my current tank, as you can see the cyanic bacteria problem, I think it should be fixed in the next couple of days. Not really happy with it, gonna maybe take the rocks out this weekend and re assemble. I never dipped any of the rocks and am worried I may have blown it. The Frogspawn looks like it could be doing better and if you can notice the top zoo rock in the far back is almost all gone... Im pretty sure its been being ate. Im looking at getting a MP10 to hopefully help the water flow increase and maybe that will get rid of the cyanic bacteria problem as well...

Any advice or comments would be greatly appreciated.

I figured out that my cyano was coming from disturbing the sandbed too much. I have been leaving it alone, and the cyano completely went away. Nutrients and light both feed it. I would suggest:
- reduce feeding
- increase frequency of water changes
- don't forget to blow detritus off of LR once or twice a week
- increase skimming
- try chemical medias (Purigen / Chemipure Elite)

Try one, multiple, or all of these and give it time to see what happens. This hobby is all trial and error and eventually you will find a solution if you use a systematic approach. What I can say is that the problem didn't start in your rock, but rather with your maintenance.

ANGEL-do you have a photo of your tank?

What do you mean by "Blow detritus off of LR?

Im thinking of getting a MP10 which should help a lot with the flow, I believe my flow hasn't been good and that might have helped cause problems with the Cyanic Bacteria etc...

This is my build thread, there are tons of pictures!! :eek1:

I use a turkey baster to clean off the live rock, you will be surprised that no matter how good your flow is that stuff will manage to build up in the rocks that needs to be lifted back into the water column for filtration.
