My JBJ 28gal Nano Build Thread

Yeah, really cool guy. He has given me all the water for free, the sand for seeding, the fish, and of course tons of good advice.

That owner is bringing up a new customer...:) Rope them in with the free stuff, get them interested (or infected) in the hobby and then they buy all sorts of goodies...at full price :)

The best marketing tool is a successful tank...keeps up the interest.

While I understand what you are saying, it wasn't a shady set the hook kind of situation in this case. He continues to give excellent deals to this day, and everything I have bought from him is either at fair market value or at "hookup" price. Though I have spent my fair amount of cash in there at any rate ;) I still haven't paid for a gallon of water to this day...

Honestly sometimes I feel bad about it, thinking "Man, this guy needs to make some money off me instead of giving me stuff so cheap!!"

Don't feel bad at all, if doing this was hurting him he would not continue to do so, there is plenty of markup for him to eat a few gallons of water and a "hookup price"here and there if it keeps a good customer coming back.

Have managed to get my Ca/Alk balance back in line with a 2-part from Kent. My Alk was dipping, but I think I have a solid Ca/Alk/Mg schedule in place now, and the Kent Purple Tech won't be used any longer since I have no idea what the balances are in that supplement.

Growth is good, all of my ORA SPS has been showing significant growth and color / PE are excellent. My green/brown acro and yellow porites are looking good also, except for the burn marks on my porites from when the emerald knocked over the more aggressive ORA purple stylo into it for an afternoon (despite it being glued down!). Unfortunately, the tree coral is on its way out, but I think that's just the nature of the hobby... Will probably pull it in the next few days and figure out something to replace it. Clam is still doing well, even under CF (*knocks on wood*).

Alright Slvr, here is my update :)

Was out of town for one night earlier this week, and came home to a near crisis. Walked in to see skimmer style bubbles being pumped into the DT from the return pumps, chiller was frozen solid, and sump had been emptied onto the floor. Apparently the skimmer outlet clogged into my foam padding and caused it to overflow. I must have caught it early, as it doesn't look anything was affected despite 83 degree tank temp and massive amounts of bubbles. What a nightmare!! I was able to quickly refill it, unthaw chiller, and get everything back going again. Mental note, always keep skimmer return angled at 45deg!!!

Anyway, my new dosing schedule is working well as my Ca/Alk/Mg is staying in line. My clam grew a new layer to it's shell which is a good sign. SPS, especially the hyacinth birdsnest is growing phenominally! Enough talk, here are the pics:

whew, dodged a bullet there! What was the final synopsis on the 2 part dosing schedule? I'm doing mine every other day to maintain and I'm not getting growth anywhere near what you're seeing ...

Two other quick notes that I forgot.

1) Tree coral, after going through a funk, it back looking healthy again as you can see in the pic, not sure what happened there...
2) Frogspawn's sting like CRAZY! Be careful! I had a cut on my hand while cleaning earlier, and when it touched the frogspawn I got a lightning bolt of pain up my arm. Eeeek.

Honestly I would just say test every day for a week or two until you get everything in line. Currently I'm dosing every other day, 1 capful of Kent Tech M, 1 capful of Kent Ca 2-part, and 2-capfuls of Kent Alk 2-part. Iodide I do halfway between weekly water changes.

Wow after reading your entire thread and loving every second of it, I have decided to start my own nano, I was leaning towards a BioCube 29g, but really like the JBJ. I am in love with your rics, they are absolutely stunning, my wife is uber excited with seeing your clam. We currently have a 275 gallon cube that has been continuously running for 5 years now, but we really want something for our room. We have three small children(all girls) and it is amazong to watch them just sit for hours admiring the tank. Thanks again for all of your dedication to your tank and this thread. Keep up the great work.

Wow fraggle, thanks for the compliments! I never set out to be inspirational but happy its turned out that way. Wish you the best of luck wifh your nano adventure! Feel free to drop by for tips.

Rics are definitely beaufiful with the added bonus of being easy. I take more pride in my SPS and clam for sure though, its no small feat in a nano under CF.

Ange! So glad to hear your averted disaster and saved that gorgeous tank. I'm glad to see everything survived as well.
Can I ask....where do you buy those beautiful corals? I live on long island and I know of a few places locally but I was wondering what internet merchants are good with corals. I've never purchased livestock online so I was wondering if anyone has any recommendations? I've heard horror stories of "what you see isn't always what you get (in the mail)".

Again, great job on the tank Ange.

Thanks Audi!! Most of my corals come from my trusty LFS, some are picks of random things he gets in, and some are special order (clam, rics, etc). There is another LFS that I found that gets ORA products, so I get my SPS from them because it's amazing.

I've never ordered any livestock online so I can't help you there, I prefer to see corals/fish in person to make sure they look good and healthy.

I am having some wicked growth in the tank. The SPS selection is showing noticeable growth literally daily, and even the LPS is growing quickly. The clam, as I mentioned previously, is showing shell growth under the mantle. Not sure why the growth has suddenly exploded, but I am not going to complain!! I can't wait to see things fully grown out to the point where I have to start fragging.

I have been rethinking a lot of the coral placement in the tank since I had a couple of instances of coral attacks and consequent burn marks. I'm planning out a rescape to allow for growth without further problems.

Only bad part to the growth is that the Alk/Ca are literally being sucked out of the tank. I have been doing a 2-day dosing schedule with Kent 2-part, but may need to move to a daily schedule. I see a controller / dosing pump in my very near future.

congrats on the growth! I'm on a similar schedule, so I know the CA/Alk/MG are being sucked up, but the growth hasn't been nearly as rapid. It comes in bursts I've noticed :)
