My JBJ 28gal Nano Build Thread

Your tank is gorgeous and balanced.

The Ricordia rock and clowns are stunning.

You are growing two of the only two sps I have never been able to keep in my 28 gallon, Birdsnest and Stylophora.

Hey don't forget about my psammocora and monti either!!! :fun4: I miss all my acros a bunch, I need to work on getting 1 or two back in the tank ASAP. Maybe I'll take care of that this weekend.

And thanks for the compliments!! :)

LOL, yeah the Psammocora adds tons of color. Do you have to give it a wide berth secondary to aggression?

I missed the Coral Beauty and the huge Crocea at the top, all beautiful.

Hey Ange,

Just want to thank you for this thread if you remember me. I learned so much from your thread and it's because of your trial and errors that allowed me to become a more successful reef keeper. :)

Here's one of my recent pics, I even improved in that. LOL

It sure does add pop, especially under a lot of blue! I just placed it towards the bottom and it quickly got shaded out by faster growing acros (psammocora is a SUPER slow grower). After my semi-crash that took all my acros, growth has taken off relatively speaking (still slow) but nothing is anywhere close to it so no issues.

Yeah, crocea is hard to spot in the picture, but topdown it's very beautiful. And the coral beauty is very well behaved most of the time.

Of course I remember!! Glad to see both your tank and photog skills have come a long way, looking awesome! Inspired to go look up your build thread, be there soon! :) Thanks for the kind words, and glad I could help!!! :bounce1:

And I realized the last 2 pics I posted didn't show up for some reason, so here are some topdowns of my new bluer profile. Still not sure I like it, but I have noticed some color differences in some of the coral so they must...

It's crazy the way your rics multiply. I've had a ric rock for months and I hardly get any growth from them. I wonder what's going on. I would think maybe too much flow but you've got a ton of flow too.

I've heard the same from a lot of people. I don't do anything special but my rics are always one of the fastest growers for me. I sell frags that bail off the rock when they run out of room about every 2-3 weeks. Have a nice cluster of orange ones that just bailed about to get listed tomorrow!

you know ange, my rics wont grow either. but if you think of my nanocube as a control in an experiment (since bot your tank and mine are so similar) the one glaring difference is the light. I'm convinced that the radion is what's giving you all that magical growth.

I've had other people with Radion's say that even rics I have sold them don't do well in their tanks. I don't know what the magic formula is, but they definitely like something in my tank... :)

And I know I have been a big proponent of the Eheim Compact pumps, and definitely still am. I realized I hadn't cleaned my 1000's in almost a year and flow had slowed significantly especially on the chiller. Cleaned them out last night, and even at their minimum setting the InTank basket can barely keep up. I know I have recommended in the past to use the 1000's if you replace the stock Accela pumps, but now in retrospect I think the 600's would be MORE than adequate. I also think the 300 would be more than adequate for the reactors in place of the 600 I have running on them currently. I guess I have a tendency to lean towards the "overkill" side of things. Just my random thought of the day.

I am actually running the 300 model for my GFO and carbon reactors and it does do the job. However there are not much margin. I run it on full power and the media barely tumble. I would go with the 600 and dial it down instead in order to be on the safe side.

Ange, Just noticed this thread is 2 years and 3 months old. Congrats.

Marty

Thanks Marty, the tank is just a bit older then that. Crazy how time flies!!

Like me? hahahahaha
They look ok, they just don't grow/split.
That ric rock is my favorite part of your tank! :)

Well, you may be one example, but there ARE others as well... :) Hope they take off in your tank soon, the latest batch I sold this morning the guy swore up and down that rics take a good 6-mo to establish then blow up. Mine pretty much blew up from the beginning even when I was running underpowered CF-quads.

But thanks for the compliments man. Lookin forward to coming over to check out your beast ASAP!

Man, that's hard to believe for me. My 600 is turned all the way down and the TLF flow valve is cranked nearly closed and I still get adequate tumble. I'd imagine the 300 would be more than sufficient if set to full on the pump and still use the flow valve. I guess I'll have to do some experimenting! Though I still hold that twin Eheim Compact600's would be sufficient to replace the stock Accelas. The Eheim stuff is rated VERY conservatively on GPH just like the the HP is on my German car :)

I haven't added anything to the tank in probably a year now. Was at my LFS for their anniversary celebration and they had a wicked deal on a Tahitian maxima I had been eyeing for a while, figured it would be a good choice to fill in the hole left when my softball sized green stylo died. It looked way smaller in the 100+ gallon tank at the LFS, it's huge in my tank! Still nice to have a new addition and have my clam patch back up to 4. Will have to start checking my Ca/Alk more often though cause I'm sure this sucker is going to suck em down!

Have you ever thought of modding the tank to put an overflow box for a sump for more water volume or a fuge?

Nah, defeats the purpose of having a nice compact AIO in my opinion. And water volume has never really been an issue for me as I've had great success with all kinds of livestock when I'm diligent about upkeep.

If I was going to do a sump, I'd just build out a custom tank and stand. Too much of a pain to move the tank now that it's already setup on the tiny stock JBJ stand.

Love your set up. Was curious in knowing once you went topless if you had a increase in water evaporation? How much water top off you go thru a week

Thanks
