My JBJ 28gal Nano Build Thread

So I started on getting my Bubble Magus 3-way Dosing Pump setup today. I bought it last week, but have been trying to figure out how/where to set it up. My original thought was to use my nearly empty Kent Tech bottles, but decided I wanted something translucent so I could check the levels at a glance. Further, I didn't want to risk evap and changing concentration through a required vent hole in a solid container. My original thought was an IV saline drip bag, but found they were not refillable so added complication. I finally found a couple of sweet Platypus "canteens" that had a soft shell and 800mL capacity at my local high-end outdoors store. This should allow for about 60-days between refills at current dosing levels, all while staying sealed. I drilled out the included lids and added airline connects sealed with RTV silicone.

I had hoped to put the pump itself on the hollow section of the JBJ stand where the stilts are, but it was too thick to fit so had to cram it into my already cramped cabinet. Lesson learned? My next cabinet will be well oversized to allow for all equipment to be stored out of the way and allow for a work surface next to the tank for waterchanges and such.

Here is how it turned out:

I haven't quite figured out how to route the lines into the false wall sump area. I am waiting for my Tunze Osmolator to get here tomorrow so I can get a solution for all 4 tubes at one time.

You could use 3m super duty velcro tape and attach the pump under the shelf. I did that and it saves so much space. Check it out on my thread.

I couldn't agree with you more, twice daily topoffs and dosing schedule can wear at you!!

My BRS order came today, so I mixed up a gallon of Ca/Alk/Mg and letting it sit overnight before loading it up into my dosing system. I'll take a time-zero measurement of my Ca/Alk/Mg tonight and will test daily for about a week to see what kind of adjustment it's going to take moving from the Kent TechM to BRS. I am pretty sure the Kent stuff is more concentrated. I was using 12mL Ca/Alk and 3mL Mg. Currently I have the pump setup for 16mL Ca/Alk spread of 6 doses per day, and Mg at 3mL over 3 doses. The Bubble Magus pump states it's best accuracy is 1mL, so I chose the intervals based on current dosing amounts.

I also setup the Tunze Osmolator. I wasn't sure at first that it was going to fit, but managed to squeeze it in the right pump chamber and attach it to the side (not the back) of the tank. It keeps the water level perfect!! Pretty impressed. Only thing I need to figure out is where I can get a ~2g clear water container with a big enough opening to fit the topoff pump, I didn't realize it was a submersible type (thought I would just drop a line in the topoff container).

Oh, and I need a better looking system for all of the lines (3 dosing pump lines + ATO) to keep them separated but securely mounted to the side of the tank.

The tank and stand are so crammed now it's really got me thinking about moving to something bigger, or at least a stand for now!

Why do you mix alk/cal/mag together ? I dose each one individual.
For some strange reason I dose 10ml alk, 20ml cal and 30ml mag everyday to keep levels stable. Weird you have way more corals in your tank then I do.

Here is what I use for a container. This might help you out.

I searched around for tube holders and all I found was this holder.

Only reason I didn't get it because for the same reason you want to go bigger.......no more room !!

That'a a good idea, may have to rig that up this weekend! Thanks!

I don't mix Ca/Alk/Mg together. I made a gallon of each, and dose each separately using the 3-pumps on the doser. I'm not quite sure what my levels on the BRS stuff will be, I had to up the dosage to 24mL last night for Ca/Alk after testing, and will probably end up going up to 32mL tonight. The 12mL Ca/Alk and 3mL of Mg was using the more concentrated Kent Tech-M solutions. I'm not using the BRS Mg yet - I want to use up the rest of my Kent first.

And thanks for the links. I found a 2g container at a local store last night and set it up. I looked at the Bubble Magus tube holder in person when I bought the pump, there is no way it would fit on the NC28 because the rim of the tank is too wide. I found another similar one that would work with some velco through, still thinking about doing that.

Holy crap, the weirdest thing just happened! My yellowtail damsel, the very first SW fish I ever owned, jumped out of the water in straight panic mode while I was messing with the tank. I thought I saw him bolt to the bottom of the tank but then couldn't find him, so I looked all around on the carpet behind and around the tank, and kept peeking into the false-wall sump area for him thinking that he cleared the wall and was in there.

After about 10min, I finally figured out where he was. Being eaten belly first by the elusive brown hitch hiker mithrax crab that I have been trying to get rid of for at least 6-mo now... Poor guy, I was just admiring how much he had grown in the year that I have had him, and how great he looked even for an easy to keep and super cheap fish.

I grabbed some foreceps and managed to rip two legs off the crab, but he escaped before I could smash his body and have a crab dinner. I've got "The Dude's" carcass sitting in a small glass cup propped against the rockwork in hopes of a sacrificial catch of that b@stard mithrax crab!

Totally explains what happened to all of my fish that went missing with no clue, 10-mins and The Dude was nearly 1/4 eaten, one night and there would have been no evidence. Other victims:
* Firefish (2nd fish I ever owned)
* Swales Swissguard Basslet
* Forktail Blenny
* Sunburst Anthias

I guess I should look at the bright side though, at least it wasn't a $125 designer clown...
Just catching up on this thread - I had a mithrax hitch hiker a couple years ago that burned me on 3-4 fish as well. Had to completely empty the tank, then boil every piece of rock one at a time until I found him. Even dipping the rock in boiling water didn't run him out ... found his carcass wedged back into a chunk of rock afterwards.

since then I've completely strayed away from ANY crab in my tank. Although I hear that the emerald's are much more friendly and the porcelain crabs are pretty cool when paired up!

Yeah, I'm going to get that sucker somehow or another! It looks like I may actually have to move the tank soon, so tearing it down for transport will be an ideal opportunity if I haven't caught it by then.

The newly automated tank is kind of weird to me. I am so used to working on the tank for topoffs, dosing, etc that I have a habit of looking at it every time I walk into or out of the house and think "Hmmmm, what needs to be done?" But lately, the only answer I can come up with is "Nothing..." Kinda boring, LOL! :lolspin:

I upped the light intensity again, I'm now running 65% intensity on the Radion. There is a 2-hr 12k "peak" in light at midday. The rest of the photoperiod is 65% 14k which is a lower overall intensity. Also added in 10% chance of clouds for the afternoon.

Radion_Profile_10.jpg

Coral growth and color have really picked up lately. I am not sure if it's related to the Brightwell Amino Acids that I started broadcast dosing around a month ago or if I am finally hitting the sweet spot of light intensity. The most noticeable growers that have taken off are the cali tort, ORA plum crazy, and ORA borealis (finally!!!). The most noticeable color improvements are in the lokani and blue stag.

I'll snag some pics sometime this week and get them posted.

Ange I found the same thing about the radion. My colors really jumped once I moved up to 62% as well as the growth. When I got to 67% I freaked a little when my tort looked like it was bleaching after really taking off, so rolled back to 62% and all is good. Even 1 % every other week seems sometimes too much too fast.

That would be a good idea before someone posts "pics or it didn't happen". :)

LOL!! I asked for it I guess... :)

After my previous bleaching experiences, I'm definitely being careful with upping it now!! At this point, I don't have a real goal for my target maximum, I'm just looking to my corals for feedback on the optimal setting. Once they get the best color and growth I'll stop tinkering! I do think the AA's have had some impact on this though, there are noticeable differences in the corals at dosing time.

I agree that the AA's have an impact I've used elos for awhile and believe it helps. Also have used Coral Frenzy to good effect as well. Are you trying any other feeding products. I feel with ULNS tanks like these it seems to really be a benefit for the SPS.

I'd consider myself an overfeeder if anything. I target feed my SPS frozen baby brine, phyto, zoo, and cyclopeeze. Also looking to add oyster feast to my arsenal. I feed either one or a combination of these every 2-3days. AA's are broadcast fed daily, with skimmer and reactors shut off for a few hours.

What made you decide to get the Led's rather then getting T5's ?

I thought about an MH/T5 combo for a long time since they are a "proven" technology. But when it came down to it, I'm a gadget junky and wanted to try the new cutting edge stuff. The outright adjustability of an RBG LED fixture like the Radion was awesome (I'd always dreamed of sunsets, sunrises, clouds, moon cycles, etc in my tank). Not to mention better efficiency, small form factor, great aesthetics, zero noise, and NO BULB REPLACEMENTS! Throw in an all in one solution (no controller required) and I was on board. I've seen plenty of INSANE purely LED SPS tanks on RC, so I knew it could be done.

Well I promised pics, and got inspired tonight, so here you go:

ORA Kelley Green, didn't hardly grow for a couple months but finally starting to encrust and take off!

The ric rock is outta control, anyone need some frags???
DSC_0670.jpg

My ORA maxima is still hanging in, not a fast grower like that freakin derasa that has gotten giant behind it!
DSC_0673.jpg

ORA green birdsnest, probably the 2nd fastest grower in the tank after the ORA hyacinth:
DSC_0676.jpg

ORA Plum Crazy is finally also coming in, got some crazy encrustation and the color is spot on:
DSC_0678.jpg

ORA Purple Stylo has been nuts even under PC, but new growth has each branch splitting again. This will be a monster soon!
DSC_0681.jpg

My Bali yellow mille, growth has exploded as you can see the white growth tips:

And finally an FTS:

I spilled all the beans at once, so don't ask for an update for a while! ;) I do have a planned purchase for the center empty area left by my now tiny ORA bellina. I've also got a fish replacement lined up for my murdered damsel.
