My JBJ 28gal Nano Build Thread

WOW, I just read this from start to finish, still wowed, I am looking at your signature and your take is exactly what I am looking to do, I am wondering what your current setup looks like, stand tank, lights etc. Would it be possible to give a Noob a little tour and what you got going on?

Well, the details on equipment are in the sig as you said, as far as pics of the setup there are plenty dispersed through the thread. Instead of reposting those, let me snag a video of the whole setup. I'll try to get to it sometime this week.

Dang, I did that once and it took hours getting to page 21!

Ange, your tank made me try my first SPS. Sunset milli and a green base and blue tip tenuis. :)

Awesome dood, I'm going to check out your thread now!! :)

I second the idea of a little tour for a Noob...thanks

See my response above and keep an eye on this thread :)

Awesome, welcome to the NC28 club!!

Haha. I'm in the same boat. After scouring ange's thread I picked up one used too and I'm officially HOOKED! Just got it last Sunday. Learned a ton from this thread and I started my own build thread. Won't come close to matching this one but hopefully it'll at least be entertaining to folks like us who are just picking one of these babies up.

Thanks for the comments!

Awesome video ange. Thanks for posting that. I was interested to see how everything fit in the back. Whew...it's a tight fit but it all obviously works just fine. It's probably in the thread somewhere but with the GFO and carbon reactors what do you have in the media basket other than filter floss?

Thanks for the video buddy helps out alot

Always here to help!

That being said, recording that video made me realize how sloppy my setup had become, so I spent some time organizing cords, getting a new stand fan, and cleaning up dust and now have everything enclosed again except the ATO container. Looking much neater and better. Even made time for a WC and reactor media change. I've been trying to siphon out a good bit of sand with each WC lately to the level down, it's been about 2-3 handfulls per WC and still a way to go until I accomplish the goal (not bare bottom, but only a thin layer).

Also had some local reefers come over and frag out some fresh cut stuff today, but still really need to get rid of some hyacinth BN!!

Anyway, I'd post pics but yall crashed my photobucket account way early this month! Thanks for all the views!

I think you and I need to write a book on reef keeping...you write about the right way to do things, and I'll write about all the wrong ways. LOL

LOL, IMO it's all just trial and error + experience. Trial and error is ALWAYS a common factor no matter how much experience you have, experience is just a positive "DC offset" in the success rate (pardon my engineering terms, LOL). I used to hear people say ALL kinds of things that at the time I was thinking in the back of my head "this guy is full of crap" only to find out 6+ months down the road that they were dead on.

Granted you can't believe everything that everyone says (obviously), that's just common sense, but typically if you see results you know who to trust. And my book is right here in this thread, LOL! It's 1.5-yrs worth of inexperience, learning, trial and error, bad experiences, good ones, but always progress. :)

I think it's because we view it so much that they want to charge him. I guess you know you have a pretty sweet tank when your photobucket account gets shut down.

How often do you do your water changes and how much?

I target 5g a week, but lately haven't been doing better then every 2 weeks.

I don't pay for photobucket. Why do you need to pay?

Because they have a free bandwidth limit of 10gb, and yall view my pics too much so I hit the limit shortly into the month. :) Agree it's free though, to a point.

+1, and thanks for the compliments bro!!

Awesome tank. I have a JBJ 28 that I started in October of 2011. Your thread actually helped me decide on the tank. I've been experiencing great coral growth, both SPS and LPS, using all stock equipment plus 2 vortech pumps (750 and 1050) and an eShopps skimmer. I do a 5 gallon water change each week.
I just upgraded to a Radion. Can you share with us the program that you use for yours?

Thanks,
Steve

Thanks Steve!! Slight correction on your pumps though, sounds like you are using Koralia's not Vortech's. :)

Latest program details below. PM me your email address and I will send you my file to work with, if you want.

Since you are just making the switch, you are going to have to start VERY low intensity, trust me on this. I had a pretty severe initial bleaching by trying to start at 50% and lost a couple of frags. Eventually I found that 20% was a good starting value, and ramped up slowly over the next couple of months (2-5% per week). I know it's tempting to rush and try higher intensities quickly, but it's a really bad idea. If you go back through this thread to the October 2011 timeframe you can read more details about my experience.

By the way, I've heard hundreds of stories about people being mad that their ORA mandarins don't eat pellet food. Well I either got lucky, or people just aren't patient enough. Little Yoshi GRUBS on some New Life Spectrum Thera+A small fish 0.5mm pellets. He goes after those things with way more tenacity then the copious amount of pods in my tank.

Photobucket should be back up in about 4-days, so will post some updated pics (including Yoshi) then...
