My journey using Chloroquine Phosphate begins...

I have been having some issues with this drug. I bought a kilo of it on here from a link someone had posted a while back. Most of the fish handle this great. I have probably killed 15 Tangs while treating with this stuff. They are good for about 5 days then just stop eating, over the next few days the bellies just collapse and they die. I have yet to bring one back after they stop eating. Even removing the CP out of the tank doesn't seem to help . The second they lose appetite I can usually expect a death in a few days. I have been dosing 40 mg/ gallon. One time dose. Like I said, tangs are the only fish that haven't made it through one treatment for me. Every other fish has been just fine.

Does anyone have any suggestions or have had luck treating tangs? Did you try doing a lower dosage or something! Thanks

How are you measuring the dosage of CP? Gram scale or with a scoop? I've treated numerous tangs and never seen that happen before. You may be overdosing...Whom is your supplier of livestock? Is their source reliable for tangs?

Same here; I've treated dozens of tangs with CP without issue. 40mg/gal, one & done (I use a gram scale to measure). I usually hold it there for 30 days. I've even treated an Achilles, Moorish Idol, various butterflies and currently a pair of Mandarins with this stuff. I don't see how you can get much more sensitive than the latter.

The tangs are coming from apet and foster and smith. I am using a gram scale as well. 40 mg / gallon. Usually use 20 gallon tank. So I dose a 1 time 800 mg or .8 grams because of my scale. I am using a 300 dollar chemistry scale from school. I zero it out before weighing it. The reason I know it's the med is because these fish were eating prior to dosing the medicine.Do you guys have any idea on what I could do so that the fish won't lose their appetite

Where are you getting the CP from? I just had a bad shipment of CP come in from Fishman Chemical that did nothing when I treated with it. Was definitely not 100% pure and had weird fillers in it that made the tanks smell like caranauba wax. The 25g bottles from Thomas Labs worked awesome when I used them. Make sure you have 100% CP powder.

I got a kilo of it from Fishman Chemical... Then why does it say 99% pure? How do you know if you have a bad batch? I don't really notice a smell or anything when it's mixed. Anyway, could you see this stuff work if I did half a dose or something then tried waiting a couple days then dose a little bit more? Kind of like dosing cupramine.. I didn't know if maybe the fish could used to the drug a little bit more.

This medicine is really supposed to be a one and done kind of treatment if you get true CP powder without all the fillers in it from my experience. Some rare cases you may have to redose after 7-10 days to finish the disease off but dosing every few days is not usually advisable. Also, under dosing is a problem as the fish/parasites will build up a resistance to the drug and not die off as they should if treated at full dosage. Some other members on RC have had issues with Fishman's CP if I recall. If you look back a few pages on this thread I believe another member had mentioned Fishman Chemical's CP as being suspect in composition. I have no affiliation with any of the CP companies and have no real preference but I will be looking for another supplier next order. My entire 1200 sqf room smelled like Camauba Wax or something similar after treating with their CP this past order and the water was off colored. If you read the excerpt I posted above from Bob Goeman's book he mentions all the fillers that are in the tablet version of this drug. How are we to know that one of those fillers is not good for our fishes health? 99% pure is great but what is in that other 1%? Are they grinding down tablets to supply the kilo of CP or is it truly CP powder? Just thinking out loud...

You never mentioned if you had issues dosing with that CP? Even though it smelled like Camauba Wax, did it treat the fish or kill any? So you are saying if I have legit stuff then the fish should be able to take a 40 mg / gallon dose no issues?

I bought my last batch from bigfish$$. He also sells it on ebay. The only issue I've had is the closer it gets to the batch expiration date, the cloudier it makes the water. It might have something to do with the binder that was used. But it still seems to work fine.

Has anyone asked or received a chemical analysis sheet with their orders of CP from Fishman Chemicals? I am beginning to suspect that their product is not as pure as they say on their site. They are selling a kilo for $185 on their website. Take a look at these chemical companies recommended by Bob Goeman's book and their prices for the same drug. As far as I can tell each company provides a chemical analysis certification sheet with their product and they are priced way more than Fishman.

Not saying more expensive is better but seems like Fishman is way under market norm for pricing.

No. Nothing happened to the fish that had ich. I treated the fish for over a month. I even redosed every 10 days. This was the CP from Fishman. The CP I used from Thomas Labs worked within a week. One dosage at 40mg/g should be enough to treat if pure.

I'm not going to lie this is frustrating... Has anyone in here had luck using CP from Fishman? For all I know I have kilo of sugar in a bag and it's not even CP....

Would like to know as well...if you look a few pages back in the thread people are being told to dose CP everyday by them. Its no wonder they are telling everyone to dose everyday if their product isnt true CP.

I did a search on alibaba for CP and 5 chinese companies responded to me the price range is 45$ / kg with a 25kg mlnlmum to 180/kg. My problem is that Chinese companies are unreliable when it comes to quality . This past Christmas. I treated a dog that suffered liver failure and severe blood loss from eating a rawhide treat made in China and let's not forget about the dog and cat food debacle. A few years back when pets died from melamine which was mixed into wheat gluten. My question is does sigma and the other companies produce CP or order it from China?. Our results will vary if the CP is not standardized.

I have a McCoskers flasher Wrasse and a green clown goby in QT tight now. I'm on the 4th day of prazi tx. I would first like to report that clown gobies have a reputation of starving right off the bat. My goby did not eat for 3 days and today he seemed to eat well. Could this be because of purging any intestinal worms and increasing appetite? Possibly, but I'm happy to see him eat.

If the tomont stage is 3-28 days why do we need to dose more than a month. Furthermore, I would expect that water temprature speeds up crypto reproduction and thus possibly reduce the time needed to tx CP. Does anyone know what factors influence crypto tomont cycle? 3-28 is quite a large range. I would like to keep the med exposure to a minimum while still being effective. The CP I ordered from Thomas labs recommended a tx time of 10 days.

As for the display, it has never had fish but I have a detritivore starter pack the was added and thus a possible crypto source. Some people stated having a tank fishless for up to 9 weeks but this does not make sense based on the crypto life cycle. I would think a month would be sufficient. Thoughts?

I will keep people updated on my progress.

I just wanted to give an update to all the CP users that I have purchased a new kilo of CP from the vet pharmacy that alprazo recommended in another CP thread here on ReefCentral. Here is the link to that thread:

http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2152307

The name of the supplier is Boothwyn Pharmacy and they are outside of Philadelphia and have been in business since 1933.

As alprazo suggests, speak with Louis the vet pharmacist. His contact info and requirements are listed in the link above. This CP is 100% pharmaceutical grade with no filler and comes with a certificate of authenticity and spec sheet on the drug if requested. It is by prescription and you must provide a photo of the infected fish as alprazo mentions in the link above if you are a hobbyist looking to purchase this drug in smaller quantities.

When I spoke with Louis he said pure CP should have no smell or water discoloration to it when mixed with saltwater. He also stated the $185 that Fishman Chemical is charging was extremely low for a kilo of true 100% CP powder in the pharmaceutical industry.

I will update when it arrives tomorrow.
