My LFS sold me a firefish for $74

They can sell for whatever they want. Its the consumer that needs to do the cost/benefit analysis. If they are too expensive they will loose out. Yeah! 50 posts, finally I can view the buy/sell forum again. Later...

A few words of advice that I live by...

"Something is only worth as much as someone is willing to pay for it"

just thought i'd throw that in there

I respectfully disagree with these statements as his case may be circumstantial. Maybe there are no other LFS in the area. In which case, does that mean he deserves to be taken advantage of? That's like saying that you find yourself low on gas while on a road trip and the only gas station within a 20 mile radius is selling gas for $7.00 a gallon. It still doesn't make it right.

In addition, it is poor business ethics such as these that prevent hobbyists from becoming interested in the hobby. Especially when you're dealing with someone who is new to reef and fish keeping. I could have easily gotten taken advantage of when I started out. I didn't know better. I got lucky with an honest store. So implying that it is his fault for not "doing his homework" can be construed as ignorant. We rely on our LFS to educate us in an honest fashion, PARTICULARLY when we are just starting out.

Unfortunately, we do not live in a perfect world.

What? I had no idea there was a reward for hitting the big 5-0. I better get posting:wave:

+1... There are plenty of shops around here that 'take advantage' of customers ... They rarely get any $ from me !

unlike what looks like popular opinion most places I shop have fish prices that come in below a prominant online business like foster and smith. If you are in a high end area like say the house of fins in Conn, then you should expect a much higher markup.

There are a bunch of different sides to it, and i do not begrudge the LFS for trying to make a living. Birck & mortars definitely have more expenses, especially in terms or rent and possibly payroll... BUT DAMN! When you are 100% more expensive then whats available online, for the exact same thing... It's easy to see why internet stores are winning.

TBH, if I would have known the firefish was $74 I would have said no. I didnt know the price until i got to the register. By that time, the fish was in the bag... the guy had yapped me up... I had come in about 15-20 miinutes before closing and I didnt want to feel like I robbed the guy from closing up early.

I saw $35 sticker on the glass and a $74 sticker on the glass, and from my previous online shopping I didn't look too closely at the fish names... I actually REALLY hate it with sales people are with me as I do my shopping, and I never got it so bad until now. :)

I've got maybe 4 LFS in a 30 mile radius of me, but I'm sure I'll be doing most of my fish shopping online.

No offense but you had the ability to walk away from the sale even with the fish already bagged. YOU made the choice to pay that price so you can not put blame on the LFS.

Are their prices high, it sounds like it from your statements. But it is up to you to do your due diligence and shop around/research if you are not willing to pay those kinds of prices.

Sometimes you may not know until it is too late that you paid too much. However, once you learn that fact, it falls on you if you go back and it sounds like you keep going back to this LFS.

I will say that I am a low price shopper myself and also will tend to look to the internet to see if I can get something for less. But I will also be willing to pay more for an item to get it right now. Just depends on if I need/want it now and how much more it is to buy it locally. But I always look around and educate myself on the prices so that I am comfortable with my choice.

Just want to mention one thing since so many people are mentioning online for livestock. Take note that shipping is not cheap. Purchasing from online will often result in a higher price than LFS once the shipping is added. This is because they have to be specially packaged and shipped next day with certain care. Online shopping for livestock becomes MUCH more cost effective if you're buying numerous fish or corals at once. But buying one fish, you will find out quickly, isn't that cost effective. On a $35 fish, you are likely to pay more than $35 in shipping, which puts you back to square one.

I believe that it really is something is worth what you are willing to pay for it. In this day and age, we have the option of buying on-line. You don't have to pay what a store is charging. But I like to buy from my LFS because I like having them around. They do so much for me. I can only have a tank because they are willing to help steer me through the ins and outs. I would surely have killed my tanks off many times if not for their help. Indeed, they expect me to buy from them sometimes in exchange for their help...and I am good with that. But when I see they are off with a price...I am free to say to them "hey, you are out of your mind with that price, man. XYZ company has it for 20% less." And they can honr my request or not. It's a balancing act.

+1^^^

The real truth of the matter is...like most people in this world, not just in this hobby alone, will pay for something they want.

how much is that hockey card really worth?? well the book says $500...
but I'll pay $1000...Why? ? Because I WANT it.

Hey if i see a snail i really like, but that guy at the lfs wants $150 ... guess what, if I dont have the money now..i'll be saving it, cuz I want it!!

Sure some places price markups are insane. But you cant make someone buy something that they dont want.

If it's a matter of "the fish was bagged already, and I didnt want to make the salesperson feel bad" ......

Well who is the one that should ultimately feel bad
You, the person that is about to pay for a overpriced product
or the person that is ripping you off.

But if you enjoy the fish...thats all that matters in the end...dwelling on the past isnt good for anyone.

just my 2c

Give me the name of the place. I'll go there acting like a newbie, have them bag all kinds of stuff up, then tell them I don't want it anymore.

I understand the argument that something is worth what people will pay for it but what they did is not acceptable. This wasn't a negotiation. They knowingly took advantage of someone.

There's a difference between knowingly paying extra for convenience, etc when you understand where the pricing is and getting taken advantage of while putting your trust and support in your LFS.

Exactly. That store should research people before they agree to bag something up. Sorry, but they just didn't make an informed decision. They had the right to refuse after all.

That really says it all. Can't blame the LFS for the price surprise at the register when someone doesn't bother reading the price labels.

The more LFS disappear and this hobby moves online, the smaller it will become. The LFS is the single biggest draw for bringing new people into the hobby.

A smaller market means less vendors, less equipment advances, smaller advances in actual reef keeping.

you got scammed. drop pennys in their tanks and return the "favor". if they hassle u tell them ur making wishes for fairer priced fishes. no mercy for those who prey on the unsuspecting.
