My LPS under leds

I have a custom 50 gallon tank most lps and some sps. Recently I added a gen 1 Radion over the tank.
I'm still trying to get the white balance worked out on my camera, but this is close.

Your tank looks incredible. I am in the research phase of my first reef tank. White balance looks pretty good. You have such a broad range of lights and dark in your tank I would consider some high dynamic range photography if your up for the challenge.

Thank-you for the compliment.
I'm not sure what the challenge is.

Wow! What corals do you currently have in the tank? i see a few sps too? Some close ups would be great!

I have 4 different hammers, a couple gold/orange torch corals, 3 other torch corals, 9-10 frogspawns, 3 candy canes, 3-4 chalices, 8-9 monti's and a couple different colored sticks.

When you're able to produce better pics, then please post. I'm a huge euphyllia fan.

Are your gold/orange torch growing well?

The transition to leds wasn't easy on the corals. The lps have been ****ed for a few weeks now, but they are looking better and better every day.

I have to get someone in my area to do a little hands on camera teaching.

I'm not a professional photographer, heck, not even an amateure but the note above regarding shooting in RAW is huge. If you have a camera or phone that supports it then I would recommend that you always shoot with that setting. In simple speak it takes the image has the camera sees it and allows you to post process / develop to your taste.

Save the RAW image, post process, save to another format and you have the original to always fall back on.

I use LED's as well. Best coral growth I have ever had and they are nice on the bills. I use Rapids except for 2 actinic boosts (60 degree optics). I found that you can change the spectrum by raising and lowering the lights. Here's what I did.

Just a thought

Hi Brent,

Really nice set up there. I like the stair step effect. In my son's biocube he has Rapids retrofit and it is really nice. He dims it via a pair of potentiometers and honestly, his rose bubble tip seems to go crazy under those. Split already once but probably has nothing to do with the lights. In my biocube I use Steve's which use the luxeon LED's which I think run a wee bit cooler.

Anyway, didn't mean to hijack the thread - sorry. Quick question though if you don't mind. How are you attaching your Monti's? I have 2 frags I purchased and BSI ic-gel isn't working for the life of me.

What do you use to process your pictures when you shoot in raw?

It is personal choice I believe but I use a old copy capture one pro, which came with a SD card I purchased a few years back. They have several new releases since then but I'm still using this today because, well, it works, I know it, etc.

There are better tools out there of course both open source and cost but it depends I guess on how much you are doing vs. the return on investment. Lightroom is a good work flow program but again there are others that work with Raw formats. I believe Picasa also supports RAW which is free.

Before you dive in and when you have free time maybe do some reading on it. Like I said that is all I shoot in now with my DSLR (Olympus E500 - another old thing :). I make a ton of mistakes around white balance and other settings and I've found that I can typically save the image if it is in Raw compared to other formats. On my wifes Sony camera it saves one image in RAW and the other in JPG. Takes more space but sometimes easier to see good vs. bad photo's if the computer we are using doesn't have a RAW plug-in.

Please note, I'm really only a beginner in this subject but this works for me.

I wedge them in a rock and tell the fish to play nice. Usually they attach fairly quickly but occasionally I am forced to use super glue. I don't get too fancy though.

Picasa does support RAW files.

I've been using it recently since switching over to shooting RAW mode. I find RAW gives truer colors under LEDs, very rarely do I actually post process and when I do it's tends to be a need for fill light rather than anything else. Normally I'll take a shot, crop it, sometimes add a frame effect and then just save it as a JPEG.
