My mandarin now has a girlfriend

Got tubes?
Hi all!

I was at Emerald Bay tonight with a buddy of mine just getting out and over their way since gas has come down and I saw her. A cute little female mandarin. I got excited because I have a long term goal of wanting to breed them (its already been done, although its not an easy task... again, long term goal ;) ). I had Chris put some brine in and she went to town on them, which to me was at least a good sign she'd probably eat frozen. I mean, she got EXCITED and ate about 4! And she's tiny!

So I got a great deal on her (thanks Chris!) and brought her home. I acclimated her for about 30-45 minutes and put her in. She sat on the sand for a little bit and then my male mandarin finally came around. He got all excited, stuck his fun up, fluffed himself out, and just in general showed off. Apparently it worked as she has been following him around the tank everywhere he goes and if she stops for too long he comes back to her. :D Here are a few pics I grabbed. They're not great, but they get the point across. ;)

Needless to say, she's a bit younger than he is. ;) I'm sure they'll grow well together, though. Now to see if she'll eat frozen... I have a feeling she will. If not, I'll probably try a breeder net and letting her take her time feeding. I've heard some people have had really good success with that procedure.

Just thought I'd share!

Thanks man! I'm pumped! :)

Mandarins are actually really easy to sex. The males have a very long fin/pointy thing on top while the females do not.

Oh, he looks happy now, but wait until she wants the rock worked rearranged and tells him he can’t hang out with all of his old fish friends. And heaven help him if he ever comes home with crabs.

So cute Brandon- cheers to the happy couple - here's to lots of fish babies- we are hoping our tank will be ready for a mandarin in the spring..

Thats encouraging, Mike. :)

Tim.... you need help... preferably from someone other than yourself. :D

Thanks Hollie! Mandarin's are AWESOME! The reason I have both of these is that they will eat frozen as well as live. Well, so far I have yet to confirm frozen on the female, but I know my male does and I have a feeling she will as well. :)

this might be off topic..but...euh......uh.....uh....i think you should have ordered more than TWO emerald crabs....LOL

How about I trade you 2 of my emeralds for your flamin zoa frag? ;) I think I have a few to spare from a moster order!! I LOVE the new couple! I want to have a pair of flames! I have done alot of rading on them and they can be paired up but not as easy as sexing mandarins.

I want a pair of flame angels, too, Angela! There were some on eBay about a year ago and I almost pulled the trigger, but decided not to. I wish I would have now. But oh well. I hear angels aren't too hard to breed.

Here's some good reading if you've not already seen this:

Check out some of the angels they've bred. Holy crap!

And thanks to Chuck for sending me that link earlier tonight. :)
