My Maroon's Finally Laied Eggs

growing the rots in the hatch tank is a bad idea. it will add to much waste and ammonia. only need to add rots when the babies hatch.

i dont use alot or any parent tank water for my hatchlings. all you need is aged saltwater. aged as in made 24hours old. i always buffer my rodi with a pH buffer so its not so harsh on the fry. it seems to help. so when i fill up my rodi tank, i'll add the buffer and mix it up with a powerhead for a few hours then add the salt. i heat it and let it mix for a day before i use it in the fry or any tanks. sometimes ill add a little parent tank water if its clean enough.
when i fill the fry tank with water, you just want enough to cover the pot or tile that you have. so in a 10g i use, i'll add like 4 gal of water. i would keep the babies at a higher temp than the parents. i keep both of mine at 84, but since your main tank is 80, i would keep the fry tank at 81 or 82.

as for the rotifers, if you want to use the rots that you thin out in your main tank thats good foood for the corals and fish to eat. i do this sometimes. just make sure you strain it. hehe. the bucket of rots usually get high ammonia. so i would strain them hen rise them a little with fresh saltwater.

if you have a problem with keeping the temp up, then use a controller and a bigger heater. some of my tanks i use a 100 or a 150 heater with my rkl. the longer heater will help keeping the water warmer for the babies. i never trust heaters to remain constant so thats why i use a controller for the heat. i found a good deal on a rkl so i bought it. you could use a jbj heater controller or a whatever.

Thank you as always you give great info . will post day 4 pictures tonight when i get home

Here we are at Day # 5 i keep trying to count them but keep losing track . It does not seam to be a lot just hard to count them .

wait till they get better! pretty soon you will have around 1200 or more fully fertilized eggs. mine lay monster nests..

Ok so last night i got home and the eyes have turned silver . Every thing that i have read said to pull the tile out because they will hatch that night that is what i did put the eggs in the fry tank and woke up this morning and not one hatch . is this a proublem they look the same as yesterday . what should i do ???

Does any one have any input the eggs still did not hatch in the fry tank . did i mess up by pulling the tile out to early ???? they are not as orange as they were .

Although you see it written everywhere, the eggs do not hatch the night the eyes turn silver. Ive never recorded it, but I would say once I can see silver, reflective eyes, the fry hatch about 3 days later. Once you pull the eggs away from the father, aeration is VERY important. If you dont do it right, the eggs turn grayish and spoil (fungus). I know you are excited for a first time baby clownfish event, but here's some advice:

Get a calender.
Write down when the eggs were laid.
Keep the tank temp consistant.
Feed the parents good.
Record when the eggs hatch.
If you want to try to raise them, shine a light the night they hatch with no water movement and transfer them.

Assuming your tank temp doesnt change, you can about set your clock to their timing. Pull the tile/eggs the day of hatch.

My Occys ALWAYS lay between 5-8 PM, always hatch on day 8 (at 80.5*F), and lay again5 days after hatching.

What day were you on? If the eggs are still orange, but have reflectiv eyes, you are WAY early. Search thru the big clownfish breeding threads on here and read. This will keep you reading for hours/days.

These are days from hatching...

I'm at the point to where I just want to throw in the towel I check the eggs and they did not hatch and they were all white I knew they were no good . My wife keeps telling me not to give up its all a learning experience . I think I will try one last time if it does not work then I think I may be done. So I ask you guys if I keep the DT at 81 and they eggs were laid on a Sunday when should I expect the eggs to hatch

Just relax and let the next batch hatch in the tank. Look at the eggs every night while making notes on a calender. The first few batches arent very good anyway. The parents have to "learn" how to make a nest, fertilize, aerate them, etc.

IMO, I did everything right and I have ZERO babies from the first TWO hatches, ONE from the third, then numbers started climbing. Next was 4, then 40, then 100, etc.

The first few hatches are no good anyway, so watch, make notes, learn their timing, then jump in. They have babies twice a month. A month in a saltwater tank life is a split second :)

Relax! It's really not that hard.

Thank you so much .

how many egg clusters have they laid so far? most breeders wait till after 6 to 10 hatches to begin to collect the eggs. this is to allow the male and female get in sync with laying eggs.
if they turned white it might be from a fungus. if they are not fanning the eggs enough then you get a small powerhead and point it at the eggs.
if you have your tank at 81' then your eggs should hatch in 6 days.

That was the 3rd batch of Eggs . I do not have a small power head . cant i just use a and air pump ? im just trying to figure out what should i look for with the eggs as to when i should pull the tile . Do you maybe have a picture of some eggs that are going to hatch that day ? any help would be great . So if i have my tank abot 80 to 81 i should expect the eggs to hatch in about 6 day is that right ?

i would wait till like the 8th batch before i would try to raise any. you run the risk of deformities. use this time to allow the pair to work together and also get the timeing of the hatch days so you know what day the fry hatch on. mostl likely it will be the 6th day at your current temp.

i usually pull the tile the night of the hatch. so on the 6th day i would pull the tile and put it into the hatching tank about 2 hours before lights out. so my lights out is at 10pm. so i'll pull the tile about 8pm then put an airstone to the tile or pot in my case and have the fry tank already at the temp of 81 or so. then i would go to bed. when i wake up, i go and add the rots and tint the water and watch the little buggers grow.

clowns can live up to 25 years old, so you have plenty of time to get it right and raise some fry. hehe
be patient and give them some time to perfect the egg laying process. take videos and notes and remember what time they lay the eggs etc. soon you'll know exactly what date and time they will lay their eggs. clowns are clockwork if they stay within their structure. movement of tank stuff, rocks powerheads, or addition of new fish would throw them off.

Well Guess what . The Clowns clock must be broke the first 2 batches were on a Wed then the 3rd batch was on a Sun and now the 4th Batch of eggs was Today Thur .

Just wanted to share a Video with you guys and gals . It is short but does show the eggs and mom doing a great job at careing for them .

Really cool! Have you picked up Clownfishes by Joyce Wilkerson? It's a great read on raising clownfish. I have it and am waiting for my clowns to officially pair and start laying too! Please keep us updated :)
