My mean Hermit Crap

he is one mean SOB, I call him killer Clam Bob, picture taken with Nikon D200 and Sigma 150mm HSM Macro and Nikon SB800 Flash in CLS mode, used camera flash and SB800 to the left of me, used the SB800 to bounce flash on top of the crab so as to get rid of the shadows, the D200 build in flash aslo trigered the SB800 flash,

very nice pics, i have ane of those crabs too hes 3 years old and quite a bit bigger than a baseball.
can I ask you something, I know they get bigger, had 2 in my tank, this smaller one destroyed the bigger one, who used to pick on him, so he fought back and left the bigger one limbless:eek2: , now when he gets baseball size big, where does he get hi shell from, cause in my tank there is no shell that size, at the moment he is sporting a turbo snail shell, by the way, he also ate one of my clams, looks like he is heading to my sump, thanks again.

ive been getting shells from craft stores and boiling them, i think mine is full grown since he has molted a few times ion the last year and not really grown any wich is good since he is in the biggest shell i can find. i bought my crab to be the warden in a 14g bowfront tank full of rock crabs and other unwanted hitchhikers now he lives in a 67g with a couple rock crabs ge cant catch.the only fish i tried and he didnt want to kill was cromis but ive moved them into the reef now.

I have no idea what you said in your first post, but I love the pictures you got. :D

lol! Mark, it sounds like he used multipule flashes to create beautiful lighting for the photograph... :)

some Nikon dslrs come w/ a commander mode (is CLS short for commander? My D50 doesn't have it) that allows them to wirelessly fire SB800 and SB600 flashes remotely (w/ i-ttl) but it sounds like the poster used the onboard flash to trigger the other flashes.

Awesome pictures!!

He is no where near full grown though!

This guy here was the size of a grapefruit, and I have seen bigger out there!! I would estimate the crown conch shell was 14".

Thanks guys, even though the pics came out OK, in my opinion they could have been better, pretty hard to get this guy to stand in one spot for pictures, the only light that was on in the tank was the actinics, MH were off, at the moment I banished him to my sump, since he has killed 2 of my Clams, once my FO tank is up he will go in there.

that's exactly what I did, also used +7 exposure compensation on both flashes "D200 body and SB800", I just love the Nikon CLS feature, lighting is the key in photography, second is composition , and third is lighting, and last but not least, practice, practice and more practice.

Wow those are great shots. I especially like the second one. The sharpness is unreal. Well done.
